Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk. Of course there are tales of strange happenings - but not more than in any other town its size. Ben Mears, a moderately successful writer, returns to the Lot to write a novel based on his early years, and to exorcise the terrors that have haunted him since childhood. The event he witnessed in the house now rented by a new resident. A newcomer with a strange allure. A man who causes Ben some unease as things start to happen: a child disappears, a dog is brutally killed - nothing unusual, except the list starts to grow. Soon surprise will turn to bewilderment, bewilderment to confusion and finally to terror.

SK is not a great writer but hes a good one. Everybody knows the tale: SK-like writer returns to hometown 20 yrs later to exorcise some old demons & finds that Salems Lot is under siege by vampires. Good year, well-told.

This author never ceases to amaze me! She does such a good job of keeping you guessing until the end. Every single time I want to make a guess, but I avoid it because I just know there is something I am missing. I will recommend her books over and over again, and this is definitely one of them.

Having read a lot of Stephen King books previously, this has been one of my favourite and loved books of his. Normally, King loses control of his stories - often turning weird or extravagant. I find that he cannot finish the stories cause they seem like a forever occuring horror. But from the start to finish, Salem's Lot kept reasonable and almost realistic. It held my attention and I was anticipating when I could finish my other work so I could sit and read. It was perfect.

After I read Salem's Lot I could not believe this was only King's second book. It is probably one of my favorites of his classic books. He sets in such a tension and subtle fear that lingers as you read and your realize later you were scared the entire way through the book. As always we does a great job with character and dialogue but in Lot the best part is how he sets the scene. You never have to work to picture the town and what's going which I believe is the best way to pull readers into the story. I didn't want it to end and I'm sad there isn't a sequel.
One of my favorites by Stephen King. Pretty creepy book that was well written. Hard to believe it was from so long ago but it's still a very good story. The disappearance of Father Callahan left me wondering about his fate, but in The Dark Tower series you see him resurface as far braver and more formidable. His journey was a rough one and a story worth reading. This is easily one of the best vampire books I've read mostly because it's put into a believable scenario on what could happen in a small town if something like this really were to happen. It starts out seemingly light but it all turns bad in a hurry.Classic King novel that every fan needs to own and read.
Yes, it was written in the 1970's, and some of the dialogue feels funny now, but re-reading King's second novel reminds me yet again, how good his early work is. And this illustrated edition is nicely printed with good paper and interesting photo montages that are suggestive rather than literal. Another bonus is the new forward by the author, explaining his inspiration for the story and his childhood love of Bram Stokers Dracula. There are also two short stories that came before the novel, and some deleted sections of the book printed here for the first time. If you love early Stephen King, this is quite the bargain, and worthy of space on your bookshelf.
This is a fantastic book. Stephen King's second novel and what a great one. I've always been a fan, but I sort of fell out of sync with his releases after I went to college. BAM had a great selection and a dedicated section for King books. It makes it way easier to find what I'm looking for.
It's all good. Condition of dust jacket, hard cover, the book contents (no marks) the entire package was in great condition. As for the story, it is still creepy, scary; one you can't look away from but at the same time hard to put down. Did I mention this is my favorite horror story. I first read the book in 1975 and I still feel the same horror of the happenings in " 'Salem's Lot" The Shining is my #2 horror book and a scary movie. The best psychological (no blood) book/movie is the 60's movie "The Haunting of Hill House" by the author Shirley Jackson. This completes my favorite horror books and movies.
May I just say Wow. This is one brilliant piece of work. Salem's Lot introduces us to this small town and its inhabitants, only to rip them apart via a vampire creating an army of undeads in the town. It is extremely scary and it does a great job at making the vampires and evil seem real. You will be convinced that any noise you hear at night will be Barlow scratching at your window. I will say it isn't his best written, but it is so raw and in your face that I don't care. A must read for any King fans!
Nice book but the photos are a bit pretentious and dont really suit the tone of the narrative. Line drawings would have been much better. Its certainly a worthy purchase for the King fan.
