If you are a fan of the movies, you probably already own the blu-ray edition. I think 4K UHD transfer is fantastic and definitely an upgrade from the blu-ray edition. I own quite a few movies in blu-ray and in 4K (as I try to upgrade my most favorite movies to the best available format) and I must say that sometimes 4K transfer could be disappointing. I recently purchased Total Recall 4K and I wasn't impressed. It was grainy. And I noticed that with other 4K editions: the video quality is not better or not detectable. I would only give one star for the Collector's Edition. The 4K film discs merit 5 stars.The "Collector's Edition" is $60 more than the regular edition. For that $60 you get a cardboard outer box and a poorly done metal ring that isn't even shiny, though the chain shines. A fabric bag is included to keep the One Ring in. I couldn't believe the difference in picture quality and sound quality compared to the 1080p Blu-Rays. There is a vast improvement in the 4K discs for color, detail, and clarity in the picture and clarity and richness in the sound. I wasn't expecting to notice much of a difference, but I was pleasantly surprised. It would be hard to watch the 1080p version now. The 4K discs look so much brighter and clearer with better contrast than the 1080p discs.For reference, I use a Sony 4K HDR player with Dolby Atmos, a Samsung 82" 8K QLED television, and a Samsung 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar with satellite speakers (the soundbar and satellite speakers have up-firing speakers as well as front-firing speakers). The surround sound is richer, but the biggest difference between the 4K and 1080p discs is in the dialogue. The dialogue is much clearer in the 4K version. I used to have to turn up the center channel of my sound systems (I have two set-ups, one Klipsch and one Samsung Harman Kardon) for most movies, including LOTR, but with the 4K discs I leave the center channel at normal volume.

These are some of the best films ever made. But the box they come in is very poor quality and came broken in multiple ways, this has been the experience of MANY people so its clearly a common problem. I'd suggest putting these discs in a different container asap. This 4K cut of the films is generally excellent, the HDR and remastered sound would make this the definitive version of the films, if it didnt have some pretty aggressive and ugly DNR. (digital noise reduction) which makes some scene appear to be smeared with Vaseline.
I bought these movies a few days after the new 4K transfers were released, because the initial reviews were stellar. I even watched a little BTS vignette about how Peter Jackson himself worked with the restoration team to get the picture exactly the way he wanted. How could it go wrong?Don’t get me wrong, the image still looks great. The HDR really is especially effective on some scenes (squinting your eyes due to how bright a torch is is a good example). But there is just an over-abundance of Digital Noise Reduction across all three movies. So many beautiful exterior landscape shots are marred by heavy DNR, that causes fine detail like grass to look muddy with zero definition. Characters faces appear over-smoothed and waxy. While I can understand that reasoning, I don’t understand why he chose TLOTR, the more widely acclaimed and respected films, to have to be altered to fit The Hobbit’s digital aesthetic instead of the other way around. It really diminishes what would otherwise be a phenomenal transfer. Colors look excellent, and the Dolby Atmos tracks are most certainly the best these movies have ever sounded. Unfortunately, the same will most likely be true about the video as well.

Sadly I waited months to watch this movie as I now wish I could get a refund. It looks vibsiblt stunning for I’d say 90% of the movie and then looks like a vhs tape you found in your attic from 30 years ago. Upon watching the extended version of The Fellowship of the Ring I discovered some sections had extreme video & audio distortions. Looking online for a potential solution I found multiple people have similar issues with the 4k extended versions specifically. Having recently watched other 4k movies with no problems and the disc having no visible damage it feels like a manufacturing error. I have yet to watch the other discs but expect to have similar issues.
