4 TB , Black WDBPKJ0040BBK-WESN best WD Passport y

I got a 4 TB Black WDBPKJ0040BBK-WESN through Amazon. Right off the bat, I plug it in, and nothing. I look at all the forums and I see a lot of complaints but not much research. Then I remembered that Windows does not always automatically assign drive letters. went into Computer Management, went to the storage snapin and sure enough, It was there just no drive letter. Never had an issue since and I move it from one place to another almost every day. Sometimes even then I have to assign a drive letter. It never fails me and it is the 4th WD Passport I've purchased.

Broken after a bit more than 3 years

Bought a 2 tb drive and a few month after 3 years the device failed. I troubleshooted all possibilities and descovered the hard drive could no longer be recognized by any computer. The hard drive was never dropped or mishandled in any way and broke hours after purchase. I panicked because there were videos that I made on the drive and I had to bring it to a local data recovery service. This will cost me at least between 500 - 1.400 EUR just to attempt to recover those treasured memories and there is, no guarantee. I am very said.

Bought a 5TB hard drive to backup all my family videos and photos. After using the drive for 11 months it failed. The hard drive has been sitting in a drawer in my desk when not used as we treat it preciously with all that priceless data on it. Never took it our of the flat and never been dropped. Looking to buy competing brand instead as they offer free Rescue Data Recovery for all their customers, even if you buy from a retailer, and not directly from them. Ridiculous that you need to order a drive directly from WD and pay extra before hand to get that type of service.

I just bought this at Walmart. It's going back in the morning. The software wouldn't install. It kept getting stuck at 18%. Then I looked on the website and the manufacturer commented to someone else with the exact same problem "You don't need software to use the device." What?? Even if we don't, why include software that says to install if it's not needed and then blow customers off if it doesn't work? Then I finally got it installed and the sign-in to Google failed because of an "application error." I signed into my OneDrive and it was supposed to move the data over. I looked on the drive afterward...nothing there. And now I'm trying to install WD Utility and it's stuck at about 75%. My computer is only 6 months old, by the way. If I can't rely on this device to even install its own software, I sure as heck am not going to trust it to back up my files.

New WIN11 computer having driver conflict WD cause
3 May 2023

I have multiple My Passports. Use them for my genealogy work and backup for my laptops. Can't do cloud storage. Today my computer experienced major problem. Apparently it stems from WD not doing an update to driver for My Passports. The lack of an updated driver has made my system vulnerable and unstable. And I can't find anyway to reach anyone at WD to help me resolve.

Ridiculously poor quality
16 August 2022

I purchased the newest MacBook Pro of the time in 2021 Christmas, and paired it with a WD 1TB My Passport. Was being told that as long as I install all required softwares, the drive will work its magic. Turned out that wasn't true. It didn't work properly since the very first day of purchase, has been on and off on MacBook. Yesterday it just crashed all of a sudden while I was transferring photos into it. Ran all drive tests on Disk Utilities but all came back to be passed. There are plenty of precious memories stored in this external drive and I seriously don't know what to do. The drive doesn't come with a USB cable that's compatible with the newest MacBooks (as they no longer have ports for USB-A cables, adaptors are needed always). Please kindly advise BUT don't ... MoreI purchased the newest MacBook Pro of the time in 2021 Christmas, and paired it with a WD 1TB My Passport. Tested Two units of 5GB, very poor quality
4 May 2022

I've around 9 or 10 WD usb external drives from older generations, running backups, virtual machines, media repo, etc ... I always used WD as one of my preferable selections on internals drives for desktop, nas and servers farms. BUT never encountered this level of pool quality on WD products. Two units of last Passport, one crashed the controller cache in less 24h under very low workload, and other unit downsize the speed to 1/3 due the poor cable quality (120€ premium product that fails for a stupid poor quality cable) I'm not the only one that have problems for the simple cable, forums and review have a lot of them ... all WD marketing and name mark go ground by a stupid reduce cost on a stupid siple cable. OK we're looking for WD alternatives. bye bye.

Very disappointed lost all my data.
3 July 2023

I was going through files on my WD passport 5TB and it stopped showing up on my computer suddenly and I cannot access my files. I tried troubleshooting it multiple times with no success. Light turns on and it won't read. I have an ancient WD elements HDD that's still going strong but this just suddenly stopped working. Judging from other reviews relatively new units suddenly cease to be recognized. Sucks that it's out of warranty and I spent so much money on a HDD for it to go out less than two years. I simply cannot recommend this product.

What a Wonderful Device!

This is a replacement, for a My passport I bought back in 2016!These models of western digital storage devices, aren't fast by any means; but are just what I need!I wasn't sure how durable this model would be; since this is my first time using this model, from Western Digital. This storage device (specifically the 5TB version), is VERY SMALL! Not a feature that I like a lot, but I mentioned this because some maybe looking for something small; you know, for convenience. The size makes me think that it could break more easily that other storage devices sold by Western digital, so I'm still unsure...The storage amount is spectacular!5TB?! WOW! But if the some what slower write speeds of this model don't turn you off, you'll have a whopping 5TB worth of storage to look forward to.'I will definitely buy another Western digital storage device in the future; if and when I need it.

Won´t setup password! Software is JUNK

I installed, restarted, deinstalled, restarted, reinstalled and so on... It simply would not start working. compared to some youtube videos, it seems my drive came with fewer (2 Programs) for windows / for macOk installing may stop at around 18% repeatedly, but you may get lucky and have the full thing installed...the drive will most often (!) be recongnized, but that is about it, the settings button will (if at all) let you change your password (stress: CHANGE... you have to have had a password before in order to CHANGE)...but it WILL NOT let you SET UP a new password.the info says for win8.1. and win10 (i have win8.1.) and also tried it with win11...i simply would not work.
