13-inch Macbook Air - Apple M1 Chip With 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU
Power. It's in the Air. It's here. Apple's first chip designed specifically for Mac. Packed with an astonishing 16 billion transistors, the Apple M1 system on a chip (SoC) integrates the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, I/O and so much more onto a single tiny chip. With incredible performance, custom-engineered technologies and industry-leading power efficiency(1), M1 is not just a next step for Mac - it's another level entirely. M1 has the fastest CPU Apple has ever made. With that kind of processing speed, MacBook Air can take on new extraordinarily intensive tasks like professional-quality editing and action-packed gaming. But the 8-core CPU on M1 isn't just up to 3.5x faster than the previous generation(2) - it balances high-performance cores with efficiency cores that can still crush everyday jobs while using just a tenth of the power. Disclaimers: (1) Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with the Apple M1 chip and 16GB of RAM. Performance per watt refers to the ratio of peak CPU performance to average power consumed using selected industry-standard benchmarks. Comparison made against high-performing CPUs for notebooks and desktops commercially available at the time of testing. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Pro. (2) Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction MacBook Air systems with the Apple M1 chip and an 8-core GPU, as well as production 1.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-based MacBook Air systems, all configured with 16GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD. Tested with prerelease Final Cut Pro 10.5 using a 55-second clip with 4K Apple ProRes RAW media, at 4096-by-2160 resolution and 59.94 frames per second, transcoded to Apple ProRes 422. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Air.

With the introduction of Apple's M1 chip, this model brings significant improvements over its predecessors. While it has some minor downsides, they can be easily addressed. Let's take a closer look at its positive aspects and provide simple solutions for any negatives. Pros: Exceptional Performance: The M1 chip's integration with macOS delivers impressive performance and speed, making everyday tasks such as web browsing, video streaming, and document editing incredibly smooth and responsive. It can also handle more demanding tasks like photo and video editing with ease. Excellent Battery Life: The M1 chip's energy efficiency allows the MacBook Air to offer exceptional battery life. You can comfortably use it for a full day of work without needing to recharge, making it perfect for students, professionals, and frequent travelers. Sleek Design and Portability: The MacBook Air's slim and lightweight design makes it highly portable, allowing you to carry it around effortlessly. Its sleek aluminum unibody construction gives it a premium look and feel, making it a pleasure to use. Retina Display: The 13.3-inch Retina display provides vibrant colors, sharp details, and excellent viewing angles, making it ideal for watching movies, editing photos, or simply browsing the web. The True Tone technology adapts the display's color temperature to the ambient lighting for a more natural viewing experience. Silent and Cool: The M1 chip's efficiency not only contributes to the MacBook Air's battery life but also keeps it cool during heavy workloads. The absence of a fan ensures a completely silent operation, allowing you to focus without any distractions. Cons (with easy solutions): Limited Port Selection: The MacBook Air (2020) features only two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports and a headphone jack, which may be limiting for users who require additional connectivity options. However, you can easily address this issue by using a USB-C hub or dock, which will expand your port options and allow you to connect multiple devices simultaneously. Limited RAM Configuration: The MacBook Air comes with a standard 8GB or 16GB RAM configuration, with no option to upgrade. While this might not be an issue for most users, those who require extensive multitasking or heavy software usage might benefit from the extra RAM. To overcome this, optimize your workflows, close unnecessary applications, and use cloud storage to reduce local memory usage. Limited Storage Options: The base models of the MacBook Air offer 256GB or 512GB of storage, which might not be sufficient for users with extensive media libraries or large file sizes. However, you can overcome this limitation by utilizing cloud storage services or using external storage devices like portable SSDs or hard drives. Integrated Graphics: Although the M1 chip's integrated graphics are impressive for an ultrabook, they may not be sufficient for demanding gaming or professional video editing needs. For users with high-end graphics requirements, considering an external GPU or opting for a more powerful MacBook Pro model would be advisable. In summary, the MacBook Air M1 13.3-inch (2020) is a top-tier laptop that offers remarkable performance, exceptional battery life, and a sleek design. While it has a few minor limitations in terms of ports, RAM configuration, storage options, and graphics capabilities, these can be easily resolved with external accessories or by opting for alternative models. Overall, it's a fantastic choice for individuals who prioritize portability, productivity, and longevity.

Post 65 year old eyes can read the 13" Retina screen without glasses - a nice surprise.Running macOS Ventura - works as advertised and expected. Instantaneous response on nearly everything - a lot of horsepower under the hood of this ultra-portable laptop for the general purpose user.Build quality is well done - despite the thin chassis design, chassis case is NOT "flexy" nor "twisty" when handling in either the open, or closed, position.Backlit keyboard is really useful. I am mostly a consumer of web content - a glorified iPad user, as it were - but wanted to run some specialized macOS apps that are not available in iOS iPad form - that, and I am an avowed mouse user, not a touch-screen interface aficionado, for serious/involved computing tasks.Firefox/Safari, BBEdit, Apple Mail, Apple Message, Apple Calendar, iTunes Music App, Apple Preview, Apple Pages/iMovie/Numbers apps, Apple iCloud and iPhoto - usual general purpose apps/suspects all are speedy and reliable. This ultra portable weighs ~3 pounds or so - carrying it through an airport, travel, distances is easy due to small size and weight. Set-up and beginning of use is within 5-10 seconds of removing it from carry-case, in most cases. In the past, have traveled with all different sizes of laptops over the decades - this M1 Macbook Air is the lightest in weight, while being the most powerful of a computer, thus far.Battery life is very good - web cruised 10 hours or so, and still had over 60% of battery life left. Past laptops would be lucky to get 5 hours before exhausting the battery. And, with this Macbook Air sitting on my lap the entire 10-hour web cruising episode (or sitting on nearby couch cushion periodically), it never got hot to the touch - at all - entire top/keyboard area remained room temperature cool, and bottom side facing my lap was barely body temperature - yet, speedy was its actions - blinkety-blink - as fast as I could make selections, etc., response was always instantaneous.Would buy another of this model.

Got this laptop for my wife's birthday and started playing around with it a little myself. I've been a windows user all my life, and the thought of using an Apple computer as being too limiting and inferior to windows. Moment I started playing with it I've loved it.The keyboard and trackpad are some of the best I've used on a laptop. The haptic touch trackpad is easily the very best. The battery life on this device is insane, and it easily lasts me two days. I'm the type of person to always stress about the estimated time remaining on windows, and disappointed to see it drop from 10 hours to 4 hours 54 minutes the moment you open a few Firefox tabs, and can say for a fact that the MacBook is far superior with battery management. As a prior gaming laptop ... I'm the type of person to always stress about the estimated time remaining on windows, and disappointed to see it drop from 10 hours to 4 hours 54 minutes the moment you open a few Firefox tabs, and can say for a fact that the MacBook is far superior with battery management. As a prior gaming laptop enthusiast, I've personally used all of the following: Flow X13 and X16, ROG g14, g15, and m16, and the legion 7 slim. In order to make the battery life usable, I always found myself turning off all the bells and whistles, turning down refresh rate to 60hz, turning down the brightness to 20%, turning on battery saver, all culminating in a poor user experience. On Mac, while I can't run that many games, the more pleasant user experience plus the fact I can't run games had made me much more productiveThe notch is semi noticeable and makes it so that your tabs cannot maximize the screen space, but I'm fairly certain that even without including the space of the notch and menu bar, the display is still 16x10 which makes up for it. It's also not that noticeable in day to day use. While I am not in the apple ecosystem (have the 23 ultra, galaxy watch, and tab s8), I have found the user friendliness, good screen, nice keyboard and trackpad as well as battery life worth the switch, and the experience far better than on any comparable windows laptop. That concludes my apple pitch.

I got the base model M2 MBA as I move on from my 2015 i7 MacBook Air and had a bit of storage anxiety, but with ever improving iCloud drive integration I still have plenty of space after installing Office, Xojo, Rapidweaver and several other apps along with docs and photos. Changes in how other cloud services work in macOS 12.3+, including OneDrive, also improved how apps are stored. I have 2TB iCloud and 2x 1TB OneDrives and still over 100GB free on my 256GB base MBA. Anything I need just gets pulled down and anything you don't need is easily purged and left in the cloud. 10 years ago this would have been a bigger issues but with 5G phones and big tethering plans usually included (like the 40GB/mo tethering I get from T-Mobile), making use of Cloud on the go is ... But you do have the option to get 512+ storage if you are willing to pay the excessive money Apple is asking, but really, casual users just don't need it anymore.New MBA has a very good keyboard, much better than the old butterfly and a perfect trackpad as always. The screen, while just the regular 'liquid retina' is very bright with excellent contrast that is nearly as good as my Dell XPS 15's OLED screen. It is quite shocking really. M2 is very good on battery (on day 2 without charging) and very speedy, easily as fast as my previous i7 MacBook Air. Scaling options in macOS 12 and 13 beta make for plenty of screen space despite the 13.6" size. While the 256GB model, using a single NAND is slower than the 512GB dual NAND SSD, you don't really noticed it unless you have to move a lot of files and you aren't going to be doing that on a 256GB drive anyway, so don't let that negativity of 1400MBps vs 3000MBps storage be a distraction. Again, for casual users, you just don't hammer the SSD enough to notice any difference. With only 8GB of RAM I don't know what the longevity will be going forward as macOS gets bigger and bloated garbage electron apps continue their march overrunning native ones, but for now 8GB is plenty for casual use and basic dev work. This 8GB/256GB is perfect for casual users and students. If you are heavy in CS or video editing, then obviously this isn't the machine for you, but for the 90% that is everyone else, the new base model MBA is great.
