The book arrived in good & original condition.I read the book in approx 1974 & have just read it again 1/2 a century later in 2023...I think modern readers would consider the book a little laborious & repetitive, but quite a few of Orwell's predictions have become reality in different parts of the world.

A must read
1 October 2022

I would say that this is a must read for everyone. The accuracy with which this brings warning pointers to the digital age in which we now live, is shocking. Though not a comfortable read, it is nevertheless compelling, and I found the book hard to put down.

A year to remember (or is it?!)

This is classed as one of the classics and as it was written a long time before 1984 some of George Orwells foresight is spooky. The tale itself is vicious and depressing and I found it hard going and was happy to get to the end. I nearly gave up on a few occasions but made myself carry on with it. I'm very glad that the current world is not a world like 1984 but sometimes, items on the t.v. and things that happen are quite scarily near to the storyline. Trust nothing and no-body.

Brilliant and horrifying. It's a ''Brave New World in 1984. Hope there's enough gas to leave this Animal Farm.''

Absolutely brilliant book. Sad to see this dystopian future unveiling...If not worse in some areas tenfold. Even Winston could drink at a bar.

For or against illustrations in boos
24 March 2017

On the basis of the Folio and other series, I formed the opinion that illustrations tend to spoil the text by trivialising it: preventing readers'imagination to visualize the text in their own terms. Even in the case of series that commissioned artist, the illustration never seem to rise to the standards of the literary text; never achieving a parity image-text. In this case, the illustrations are sufficiently non literal to complement, through allusions to aspects of the text, complement the text and help the reading experience by providing visual anchors onto which the reader can pause and dwell on what s/he has just read. The illustrations also provide a welcome break and rest from the the typography of the text, that is not as fluid and kind on the eyes as could ... MoreOn the basis of the Folio and other series, I formed the opinion that illustrations tend to spoil the text by trivialising it: preventing readers'imagination to visualize the text in their own terms. 1984 was written after the horrors of the Second World War and the atrocities committed in the holocaust. The novel is an indictment on tyranny and totalatarism . The focus on Big Brother controlling every single thing. The rewriting of history and the complete diminishing and deletion some history. It shows risk control where you are not allowed individualism or an opinion , lest you be eliminated. This novel has long been used as a text for higher levels if high school . Excellent novel and excellent teaching resource. Highly recommended.

Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy. Yet Big Brother will not tolerate dissent - even in the mind. For those with original thoughts they invented Room 101. "Nineteen Eight-Four" is George Orwell’s terrifying vision of a totalitarian future in which everything and everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime.
