1984 Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Among the seminal texts of the 20th century, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a rare work that grows more haunting as its futuristic purgatory becomes more real. Published in 1949, the book offers political satirist George Orwell's nightmare vision of a totalitarian, bureaucratic world and one poor stiff's attempt to find individuality. The brilliance of the novel is Orwell's prescience of modern life--the ubiquity of television, the distortion of the language--and his ability to construct such a thorough version of hell. Required reading for students since it was published, it ranks among the most terrifying novels ever written.

To understand how captivating this book is, understand that im 23 and other than 2 "captain underpants" books i read as a child and the book "be here now" by Ram Dass i read a few years ago, i haven't been able to read through a whole book.. the book, nineteen eighty-four however, i haven't even able to put down. It reflects very closely to the direction we humans are going to and through as we speak.

There's not much to say that hasn't already been said about this classic book. George Orwell had a somewhat prophetic mind when he wrote this and I am sad to say that the UK is rapidly becoming the place where Winston Smith lives . Everyone should read this book - it's a classic.
On the basis of the Folio and other series, I formed the opinion that illustrations tend to spoil the text by trivialising it: preventing readers'imagination to visualize the text in their own terms. Even in the case of series that commissioned artist, the illustration never seem to rise to the standards of the literary text; never achieving a parity image-text. In this case, the illustrations are sufficiently non literal to complement, through allusions to aspects of the text, complement the text and help the reading experience by providing visual anchors onto which the reader can pause and dwell on what s/he has just read. The illustrations also provide a welcome break and rest from the the typography of the text, that is not as fluid and kind on the eyes as could ... MoreOn the basis of the Folio and other series, I formed the opinion that illustrations tend to spoil the text by trivialising it: preventing readers'imagination to visualize the text in their own terms. Nice hardcover copy of an outstanding piece of literature. Too bad it is 4"X6" in size. Really hard to read due to the miniature size of the text. Unless you have super eyesight, pass on this toy.
Where to begin?I've never been a "reader." Although I've always been able to, I found it hard to sit still and retain the information I had just read.Off the bat, I was glued to this book. Reading this book was the 1st time I didnt want to put a book down and I was even excited to wake up to start reading it again.I found that current society wasn't far off being the precursor for this book which I think added alot more gravity to what I was reading.(This book also helped highlight the idea that books are in fact, better than the movies.)Astronomically creative.Couldn't recommend more.

I bought 1984 and Animal Farm for my son to read. They are wonderful and important stories for today's world. I love that he is reading a book not a kindle.
1984 was written after the horrors of the Second World War and the atrocities committed in the holocaust. The novel is an indictment on tyranny and totalatarism . The focus on Big Brother controlling every single thing. The rewriting of history and the complete diminishing and deletion some history. It shows risk control where you are not allowed individualism or an opinion , lest you be eliminated. This novel has long been used as a text for higher levels if high school . Excellent novel and excellent teaching resource. Highly recommended.
