If this lens were more expensive I probably would have rated it at 3 stars, however at the current price it is an OK lens to dabble into macro photography. What's to like: the focus and aperture rings move easily and smoothly. The fast aperture and magnification ratio are great. The image quality is very good. The only things that take away from a five star rating are the weight and size. When mounted on a compact camera, like the Z50, it's out of balance and a little awkward.

There are very few lenses being sold yet for the Nikon Z mount. I have been thinking of buying a macro lens, but did not want to use the FTN adapter. Thie price of this lens made me decide to give it a try. It is a little heavy, but otherwise works fine on my Z50, photos are good to excellent. It does 'synch" with focus peaking on the camera, so the fact that it doesn't autofocus doesn't bother me at all. My only disappointment so far, is that it does not record the exposure data attached to the image.

I just got this guy in to replace the Mk I model, which used a tubular extension to hit the closer focus range. I was thrilled to see that a Mk II came out without this extension, and seemingly with a similar MFD to boot. The tube on the old model complicated the design and ended up scratching itself leading to physical resistance when trying to zoom in, giving the whole operation a cheap/finicky feel despite the otherwise rock-solid construction. That happened right out of the box for me, and seemed to be a common issue from what I've read.Luckily, I can report that the image quality on this Mk II model appears to meet or exceed the previous one (though I haven't gotten too in the weeds comparing them yet) without any of the usability flaws. It's also quite a bit physically smaller, while retaining the excellent fit and finish. I already believe that most of my XF glass competes fit-and-finish wise with Sony G Master stuff, but this little bargain Macro somehow takes it a step further with even smoother focus and aperture rings. I seriously have no idea how they've managed to bring such a substantial construction quality to this price point without sacrificing on the glass. For any Fuji shooter who only needs macro abilities occasionally, but wants true 1:1 and doesn't want to shell out for the 80mm, this is the ticket. Beautiful for close product shots on a tripod, and even small animals if your manual-focus game is strong enough. The singular caveat is that it mounts quite tightly on my X-T4, quite a bit tighter than any of my other 9 first-party lenses. I don't believe it will damage the camera body, because the X-T4 spring-clips appear robust and this lens does not have data pins for an AF motor, so even though it's tight it still feels smooth to mount and makes the same tactile click when it's in place. It's really just something small to note, if you're as OCD about protecting your gear as I am. I actually went through the replacement process to get another example of the lens, thinking it was a defect, and the replacement is the exact same. All in all, a minor knick in an otherwise excellent value piece of gear. Wholly worth the $20 price premium from the Mk I model with the weird tube system, if you ask me. I think I'd even pay the extra $60-80 vs a used Mk I, as well - this just feels like a more complete package. If you're on a shoestring budget, a used Mk I may make sense - but beware the construction quirk of the tube scratching.
This is an amazing value even though it is a "DX" (for Nikon Z mount) lens. On the Z7 you still get 20MP in DX mode. In FX mode you will get vignetting, but even in this mode you can crop the photo afterwards and still get amazing results. The build quality is amazing, and I like the fact that it has the unusual long removable tube so you could easily stick the end of it in water if desired. It also negates the need for any type of protective filter if you leave the extended tube on the lens body. I'm having a blast with this lens, and can't find any fault with it at all. The lens is extremely sharp. Amazing value!
I purchased this lens for film digitizing work with my X-T2. The overall optics and build quality are pretty stunning for the price, and more than good enough for my purposes. That is to say, no one would mistake my scans for coming from a Zeiss macro lens on an a7Riii, but this easily yields comparable-to-better results vs my v550 flatbed with way less hassle which is all I'm really after. I could print a scan from my setup at 16x20 easy, with room to spare. The only thing to watch out for is that the lens creep on this thing is BAD. Even though it's been designed to extend only a smaller secondary barrel when focusing, when inverted my lens drops completely out of focus within *seconds*. But this is easily remedied via a stiff rubber band overlapping the focusing ... MoreI purchased this lens for film digitizing work with my X-T2. Got the Z-mount type of this lens for the Z50. Great lens overall with a few shortcomings, but for the price, you can't go wrong, especially if delving into macro for the first time. The image quality is really good, no issues that I could find. I was able to get the 1x magnification at 17.5 cm as promised, adding extension tubes of a total of 29 mm extension brought the image to roughly 2x magnification at about the same focus distance as 1x, which makes this much more versatile for Macro. The build quality is really nice, all metal and sturdy, a bit heavier than you'd expect from such a small lens. The mount has the largest diameter, with the lens becoming narrow very quickly, a big plus. The mount has the largest diameter, with the lens becoming narrow very quickly, a big plus. The lens itself is small, which is great, only becomes longer if you decide to use extension tubes. There are a few things that I did not like too much. Firstly, the aperture ring not being stepped, continuous instead, I found to be a bit annoying, as it leads to sometimes accidentally changing aperture or not really knowing what aperture you're at until you check up on it. The focus ring is very big, takes up a large portion of the lens, would not be an issue if the focus felt more defined, but right now it feels like it slips a bit, and it is easy to change by trying to change something like the aperture or simply holding the lens. Finally, the lens cap is not bad for now, but it is made of metal, it is heavy and I could see it losing grip after a while, but replacement caps should be easy to come by. Finally, this might not be as much as a con for most people, the focus positions between 1 meter and infinity are close to each other, and while this lens takes great non-macro shots (portraits for example), it is very easy to not be properly focused, which is made worse by the focus ring. The 60 mm focal length is a great for most macro situations. You need a steady hand and high shutter speed to get good pictures at this focal length.
I bought this lens to dive into macro photography, but also for product photography. I was a little overzealous with the focal length, you can't get much more than a quarter into frame on the 1:1 focusing. The focus is great on this, slow, deliberate and smooth. It has just the right amount of tension in it to nail the focus without going back and forth. However, it's a pretty shallow depth of field. Even on F/11, your focal depth is short.Aperature ring is de-clicked, which for macro or product photography I think is keen. You can dial in exactly how much you want or anything in between. It helps when trying to balance out all your other settings.Overall this is an awesome little lens for it's price. Is there slight chromatic aberration, yes. I bought this lens specifically for taking close-up images of watch movements on my Fuji X-H1. I am blown away by its clarity, contrast and color rendition. I am so glad that I’d not paid 4X as much for the Fuji equivalent - I hardly mind focusing manually. This lens is also good with close-ups of flowers, of course - as well as a shorter telephoto lens, although in that case one sees conspicuous pincushion distortion along the long edges of the frame, plus some vignetting in the corners. But this is a “macro” lens, not a portrait lens.
Nice lens for the price. Macro works well but not perfect. I wasn't looking for a portrait lens here, but I was able to shoot a nice photo of my dog. My big complaint is that useless slip on/slip off lens cap. I ordered a 3rd party 49mm center pinch lens cap from Amazon.All-in-all, worth the money.
