Better than I imagined it to be.

Doesn’t fit all bikes. It did, however, fit mine spot on! It makes for a good lock if you are in and out quickly, but I would supplement it with another lock in less secure areas. A little on the heavy side, but all locks are. Good construction. Easy to install.

I have had this lock and others like it for decades and love it for deterring ride-off theft. Last year I bought the chain accessory for this, which turns out to be trivially easy to break. The chain is reasonably heavy, but the connection between the "finger" that inserts into the lock and the chain is super easy to break. Here is a picture of the problem after I ransomed my bike back. Stolen midday in very public bike rack.

Excellent as a Second Lock

This lock is mostly aimed at e-bikes, but can be used on other bikes as well. I would not use this as my primary lock, unless you're in a safe area, on short errands briefly away from the bike. But as a second lock, paired with say, a Kryptonite New York lock, it would serve as an outstanding second level of protection deterring even most professional thieves. The reason being one would need to make several cuts with an angle grinder (using more than one battery, and blade) to get both locks off, or use more than one tool. This all means getting both locks off your bike would be time consuming, laborious, and a pain in the rear for almost all thieves. This lock is also a wheel lock. Meaning a thief can't ride off with your bike. But it doesn't lock to anything, so one could carry it away in a car for example, then take all the time they need at home getting it off. But it keeps people from stealing your wheels easily. Hence, the need for a second high quality lock.I would also add to not rely on the cable lock with this bike as a second lock. Cable locks are some of the easiest locks to cut with almost any bolt cutters.Understand, NO lock is completely safe. Any and all locks can either be cut free by brute force and specialized cutters/grinders, or picked by a professional, given enough time and determination. Using two quality locks means even an experienced thief is more likely to give your bike a pass, and head down the street to the next bike.

First lock had no keys, second lock had keys but..
27 March 2021

I really wanted this to work and ignored another review stating no keys came with it, as that MUST be a one off problem. Nope, my first lock didn't have keys - REI customer service was awesome in managing my return. As I really wanted this lock to work, I tried one more order to see if the keys came with it - they did! Except the metal is such poor quality, I bent it in testing the lock out (I'm not THAT strong, and I'm well versed in how bike locks work - the key is just that wonky). It's going back to REI ufnrotunately.

Frame lock
8 July 2023

A bit bulky (15 cm diameter), but doesnt really get in the way. Used tie wraps to secure to frame. Practical as always on frame and ready to use. Not the lightest, but fine for city bike

It's always on the bike!
11 March 2021

Great lock, it's always on the bike, can't forget it, don't have to get it out of your saddle bag or untangle from the frame. Just part the bike, push down the lever, take out the key and go. I would never leave a bike overnight with any kind of lock, but this is perfect for going into the store, coffee shop or other quick stop. I grew up in Europe and am familiar with frame locks and was looking for one like this. Found one for a good price at REI used gearNote: most bikes in the USA don't have mounting holes for this style lock. There is an 'official' solution from ABUS, however I found a couple of zip ties do the trick much better. See photos

No holder, no key! Otherwise okay.
16 April 2019

We purchased two of these for our two European style lightweight touring bikes. One lock came without its keys. When I tried to install the other one, I realized there's no mounting bracket which I had expected (and was the reason we purchased it versus a U lock which could do the same thing. I'll take the blame for not checking to see if there was a mounting bracket. I'm passing this information along for you readers who have seen these sorts of locks in Europe. If you want to fiddle with it and mount it with duct tape or something else, it appears to be pretty solid once you get it on.

Perhaps the most practical bike lock
1 June 2021

This lock is great for quick stops in stores or farmers' markets, but I also think that with the chain it holds up well as a more secure deterrent than most.By now most people know that any bike lock can be quickly cut with a lithium ion-powered angle grinder. But if a thief wanted to quickly cut the frame lock it would be difficult to not damage the target in-so-doing. Of course without the chain attachment the bike could be carried off. There is another review here that displays a faulty attachment -- that is not the one that I have, which is solid steel. So be sure to get the better (newer?) one!

Secured to frame rear wheel lock
21 April 2020

Needed a lock for low crime area and this fit the bill. Love that it is secured to the bike frame so it is always with you. My Magmun Ui6 ebike had bosses I was able to use which gives it a custom look the optional dedicated chain or cable adds another layer of security.

serves a purpose / good backup
22 October 2021

Bought a cannondale quick neo 1/2020 with this installed. Installer used wrong length bolts and unit came loose and almost caused an accident. Not the locks fault of course, but just make sure it does not work loose. This lock is handy if you are within sight but dont kid yourself about leaving a $3-4k bike unattended with this. Can be easily defeated with a hammer and punch. I decided to remove it recently due to modifying fender bracket.
