I purchased an Acer Aspire 5 A515 a few weeks ago that started having intermittentWi-Fi network connection problems. It just wouldn't show any networks at all to connect to.I tried to fix the issue with help form Acer Canada on their chat line, but they were not able to figure out what the problem was. I returned the laptop to BestBuy within the 30 day warranty and they just replaced the defective laptop with a new one. The replacement laptop hasn't shown the same issue, so far! Good job BestBuy !What I like: Touch screen is very responsive, the back lit keyboard is very helpful in a dark environment. The i3 Intel chip is fast enough and seems to be the right combo with the 8MB Ram and the 512G SSDrive is more than enough storage for my kind of light use. What I ... MoreI purchased an Acer Aspire 5 A515 a few weeks ago that started having intermittentWi-Fi network connection problems. There was no response from the power button, either turning off or turning on. It took about an hour of punching keys for the issue to resolve itself. It hasn't done it again, but I'm still wondering if perhaps there might be an inherent issue with this computer.

Was sold to us at the same time as a GoPro 8 purely for the video editing from the GoPro. Got home and set up only to find the editing software is not compatible on this laptop With go pro models 8,9 or 10 which nobody mentioned. The GoPro would not connect with ANY of the editing programs we tried. We took it back within 24hours of purchase as it was not fit for purpose, only for the store to check it in for repairs and requested our brand new GoPro also which was working fine on the iPad which the team told us wouldn’t work?Very unhappy with this purchase and unhappy the store refused to refund me within 24 hours of purchase since it was not fit for the purpose it was sold to us for. Actually considering contacting fair trading or something as it pretty disappointing

I'm really happy with this Acer Aspire open box laptop. Better than the Asus Vivobook in my humble opinion. I love the feel of the keys and I love the backlit keyboard (Bestbuy got it wrong in their specifications section. They say there is no backlit keyboard, but there is). It is a bit of a bummer the backlight only comes on after you tap once and then disappears after a few seconds of no contact, but I get it that it preserves the battery to make it that way. Speaking of the battery, that is the only true negative of the laptop, and why it is not 5 stars. Right out of the box, It only lasts about 4-5 hrs on a full charge. I'm not too distressed about it, because I only use my laptop at home, so I can plug it in. But it is an annoyance to have to plug it in a lot. ... MoreI'm really happy with this Acer Aspire open box laptop. Better than the Asus Vivobook in my humble opinion. - 1 year update - I would still rate it 5 stars but with some caveats! I regularly use this laptop for video and photo editing, heavily modded games, and internet use. It handles all three beautifully. I haven't had any issues with over heating, lagging, freezing, etc. The fans can occasionally get loud but nothing terrible or consistent. I definitely recommend buying an external hard drive or additional storage. Performance wise, it does everything it claims, and it does it well. That being said, there are 3 major complaints about this laptop. The screen has pretty poor viewing angles, and I spend a little too long having to adjust the screen every time I use it. Color accuracy is good enough, but there's definitely a matte sheen that doesn't go away no matter how ... More- 1 year update - I would still rate it 5 stars but with some caveats! Color accuracy is good enough, but there's definitely a matte sheen that doesn't go away no matter how you adjust the settings. I'm not looking for an OLED screen so I can deal with this, but if you're looking for something with the best screen, you should probably pass this laptop up. My other complaints are in regards to the keyboard. Because you're also fitting a numpad onto a laptop, the layout needs some getting used to. I regularly still find myself mis-clicking letters, and it doesn't help that the keys aren't backlit like some other models are advertised. Ultimately these issues aren't enough for me to actively dislike this laptop, but they definitely can be bothersome. - Original Review - First laptop, second computer ever. Did a lot of research for something that was good for general use, as well as art/editing programs. Laptop came quick and as described. Have used it for a few weeks for internet browsing, video editing, etc, it handles everything extremely well. The fans turn on loudly maybe once so far. Really nice having a keypad, though it does take a while to adjust to the shifted keyboard. Definitely check what processor your Acer Aspire has as there's a few different models with varying speeds. No complaints. overall - a very well made laptop.
For the price this is a pretty decent machine. The case construction is a bit flimsy and the battery isn't really secured in place inside the machine. Also, the USB C port is pretty weak, doesn't support video or charging from what I've read. Full size HDMI and Ethernet are nice if you like that, however. It's also got decent gaming performance for what it is. Enough to play casually, old games at full detail or new games at reduced detail. With a free bay for an SSD and slot for another SODIMM this is relatively up-gradable. It's a shame about the USB C, however, since a fully featured USB C port would allow for using with docking adapters using only 1 port. Overall, it's great for what it is, a low-cost machine with some corners cut, but while providing most of ... MoreFor the price this is a pretty decent machine. Pros: Laptops construction feels solid and well made. Surprisingly quick on start up which I believe is attributed to the SSD. Early days in loading other software but too date no particular faults or negatives with performance. A bit quirky, used to light on Caps Lock key but the acer briefly displays selection on screen, probably a good for the competent typist.Cons: I appreciate software continually evolves and update but although purchase only made in Dec 2020 found BIOS installed in Oct v1.09 but now superseded by v1.11 Nov & acer site warns Users of updating system BIOS.
Unfortunately all I was trying to save money by not purchasing a Mac. I found out that this really did not meet my needs. I was looking for a home computer and this is not at all compatible with my Mac products. I'm taking it back today in hopes of buying a Mac. I will see if it will be an easy product to exchange or if it will be a hassle. Hopefully it will be easy as I am spending more money. The buying experience was not difficult unfortunately, being a senior, I did not realize the limitations. This is strictly a personal situation, not reflective of the products, performance or the person that sold it to me.
It comes with Windows-S mode.I bought this to run Linux and remote desktop to my fast desktop computer. :-)4GB is NOT enough ram to run full Windows but it is more than enough to run Linux. There is a more expensive model with 8GB of ram and an SSD but you really need 8-16GB of ram to run full Windows. Windows-S mode is like a Chromebook but from Microsoft. You can only install software from the Microsoft play store.I think this MIGHT have a free slot for more ram but I really don't know.It has an Intel AX201 wireless card (wifi6) which has a Linux in-kernel driver. :-)I haven’t tried the wired ethernet but it is Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. U-SNS8154P3 NVMe SSD (rev 01)It requires BIOS changes to get to show up in Linux.Press F2 to get the BIOS setup screen. One the screen titled “main” in the BIOS setup, press control-s to see more options.Change SATA mode to AHCI (from Optane witbout raid).Disable fast boot. One really picky thing is there is no lip on the lid so it's not easy to open.I wish the capslock key had a light to show if it on or off but there is probably software for that.Seems speedy for what I want. The quality of construction seems good but time will tell.
I've had this a few months now and all ok. I like the extra cage they give you to add another hard drive inside the laptop relatively easily. Only issue was the USB-C isn't designed to do video output. I do have a USB-C dock which works Ok for all the other bits (keyboard, mouse, webcam, etc), but not for video on this laptop. There is a bit of chat on the forums about USB-C video out not being built-in, but the laptop does have a separate HDMI out which is Ok. Its not going to win any speed contests or FPS gaming contests without a dedicated GPU, but it is a good home laptop at a very reasonable price. I teamed with Office 365. I've had a few ACER products over the years and they are usually bullet-proof and this laptop appears to be the same.
