Acer has a widespread hinge problem

They can't possibly be testing these things thoroughly, and they definitely aren't putting much effort towards fixing them. Type "acer hinge problem" into google and look around for a bit.I'm posting this because my Acer Nitro 5 just broke (Apparently it had been broken for a while). The hinges attach to the lid and are screwed into the back of the lid. Well, the place that the hinges screw into broke. The part alone is a 50 dollar part. The repair would be 300 ish. This isn't my picture, but since it's happened to tons of people this picture was easy to find.Notice how the screws ripped the plastic out with them? The only way to fix this is to replace the entire lid. Maybe Acer support will have some help?"I'm sorry to hear that you're running into hinge issues. I can certainly understand the frustration, however, I can assure you that a far larger portion of Acer laptops do not experience this. A lot of research and development go into the hinge design of our products to minimize any issues. Hinges have been failing on clam-shell notebooks for as long as they've been built, and that's not just related to Acer, a quick google search replacing Acer for another manufacture is sure to produce the same or similar results. Unfortunately, the hinge is the weak point in a folding process that also has to be a hollow enough to allow for wires to pass through and not wrinkle them. Maybe the have a point about this being a common problem."I can assure you that a far larger portion of Acer laptops do not experience this." Well these one's do Acer Manny, these one's do.That's why I did exactly what "Acer Manny" said. I typed "Acer hinge problem" into google. Then I typed "Apple hinge problem" "Asus hinge problem" "dell hinge problem" and "HP hinge problem". Guess what? Acer is the only one. Actually, HP had some hinge problems, back in 2008, but they at least issued a recall. The google searches for Apple, Dell, and Asus had minimal results of customers complaining about broken hinges or denied warranties. Acer's search did.So.... it's not normal for a laptop to have busted hinges from normal use after one year? Surely a hinge is a lot simpler concept than a cooling system? In reality, they most definitely realized this. When things break from normal use, especially when they break the exact same way for lots of people, there is something wrong with the model. Stop denying warranties, and give us a recall. To any redditor that made it this far:Until a recall is issued for this, I wouldn't buy any laptops from Acer. Their hinges are flawed on multiple models and they make excuses like a 5 year old who just broke the tv. Based off of the links above they probably won't honor a warranty either. An excellent mid range gaming laptop

I recently bought this whilst in the market for a laptop for both work and leisure purposes in mind. I highly recommend this particular model as it gives you a great looking design above the standard spaceship grey, add in the coloured backlit keys makes for an amazing design. Note: these can be configured to your liking for the office if need be.The battery life is relatively good provided you are conducting standard tasks, else a quick plug in and you’re set for all other high end tasks. The fan runs smoothly and basically silent until it’s really needed.I would highly recommend adding another 8gb of memory (at a minimum) just to give you the right amount of kick to cover just about most functions work and leisure. The startup functions it comes with are ... MoreI recently bought this whilst in the market for a laptop for both work and leisure purposes in mind. Awesome gaming laptop does the job works quite well for gaming, only thing is while your gaming you may wanna keep it plugged in battery is not the best for gaming but for YouTube and Netflix and streaming is most likely great unplugged but when your gaming you may wanna keep it plugged in, I was playing a game for maybe 30-40 mins from 100% battery and it said low battery so if your going to game for a long period of time it’s probably best to play while plugged in so it doesn’t die in the middle of the game, luckily it does let you know when the battery is low it’ll pause your game and say low battery. So it won’t just turn off on you. I’m probably going to save some money up and upgrade my ram to 16 GB just in case. But it’s a awesome laptop love the design and look of it. Also I wish there was a way to change the keyboard colour. Instead of red maybe blue or some other colours other than red. But ofc the red is great as well.

Graphics and performance are top notch. Built in speakers are absolute lowest quality Ive heard in decades. The two huge reasons for the low rating; 1. A well reported problem since it came out has failed to be addressed by the company. The issue is, after a few months, the mic input, from ANY source stops working. Download and reinstalled and updated drivers. it will acknowledge you plugged in the factory headset, with mic, but will not accept input from ANY mic. To include; the 3.5mm jack, USB or even Bluetooth. No mic input works.I contacted support, which leads me to part 2. Support was very rude, and seemed to not really care to try anything. The warranty is valid for 1 year, purchased OCT, 22. It is June, '23. They said it is out of warranty, even though my Acer account clearly shows the registration date. Then demanded proof of purchase even though it was sent at time of registration. Mysteriously vanished. This is the only Acer laptop Ive purchased and it will be the last Acer product I will ever purchase. I mean, seriously, a gaming laptop that comes with a headset but no mic capability after it breaks in a few months then rude "support". Who need the hassle....buyer beware.

Excellent Entry Level Budget Gamer, Data Processor
27 October 2022

Excellent Little Unit for Entry Level Gaming, that I purchased mainly for Cuda based Video & Music conversions that are only available with a Dedicated Graphics Chip (Nvidia GTX1650 in this case) and 4GB dedicated GPU Ram.All up an excellent unit from the ever-evolving Acer Range. Not meant for AAA+ Games like my beloved Star Citizen (still in Development) https://robertsspaceindustries.com/enlist?referral=STAR-3B5L-THGB , I’ll need at least another 16GB of RAM for that. But it still lets me fire it up to check on the games progress at least. Also comes with Backlit keyboard, single RGB colour selectable with brightness selectable across 4 zones.Tactile response of the keyboard is lightweight but firm touch style reminiscent of the ZX Spectrum but not as hard ... MoreExcellent Little Unit for Entry Level Gaming, that I purchased mainly for Cuda based Video & Music conversions that are only available with a Dedicated Graphics Chip (Nvidia GTX1650 in this case) and 4GB dedicated GPU Ram.All up an excellent unit from the ever-evolving Acer Range. Oh how I’ve missed fast data entryDue to having and internal Lithium Ion battery pack and the power consumption from both the Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU, think of the Nitro Series as a small Ultra-portable desktop machine with battery backup, rather than a Field portable unit. Because you won't play games for long on battery (1 hour approx. based on other community performance reviews)Note,The Power Connector needs an extraordinary amount of force to be plugged in all the way. When I first got the unit I thought I received a DOD, but i wasn't being firm enough with the power connector. Being too gentle was a first for me in 25 years as an IT Technician. So if you set up an ACER laptop, plug it and don't get a LED Power or Charge indicator, Check the power connector is seated firmly and all the way in and the Cable is laid out /run in the way as described in the Manual. RTFM Peoples :)

Replacing my old laptop and PS4
11 October 2022

Have had my Nitro 5 i5-10300h for about half a year now. Upgraded to 16gb of RAM on day one (8gbx2... (Sorry guy that got BSOD)) and have to say im super happy with the display and performance. Has a second SSD storage slot, which is awesome, that I have yet to use. It runs current AAA games easily on high settings with some graphically demanding games (like Control) dropping to 35-40pfs but Star Wars: Fallen Order (same game engine as Control) runs a steady 60fps on my 1080p 60hz display.I was previously playing PS4 and gotta say its a step up when I use the hdmi to my TV and not going back except for exclusives. The only criticisms I have being an entry level /gaming laptop gamer/ is that the fans are rather loud when gaming, which is understandable for two fans ... MoreHave had my Nitro 5 i5-10300h for about half a year now. The other thing is that the plastic construction is somewhat flimsy though the texture and keyboard have a nice feel, though the screens are replace-able and with an option of a slight lower resolution 144hz display if you damage the original one is neat too.Over all, this laptop as a replacement for my previous 2 core 2.4ghz laptop. And to replace my PS4, i'm more than happy. I almost gave 4 stars but the upgradability and replaceable screens, and over all cost brought it back to 5 stars. Obviously isn't the laptop for the most demanding of super hardcore gamers / streamers needing the best possible machine. But for the price and capabilities with current games, im impressed. Speakers are,,, meh, okay, not amazing, but when are the ever for a laptop.

Upgrade this a little and it's fine
14 July 2022

Bought this for my daughter to play Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite. Doubled the ram when I received it and the hard drive failed inside of the first year. That I was going to replace anyway so I didn't even go through the warranty process, just bought an MVME.All that said the laptop plays the games listed just fine. Fortnite plays between 75-100 fps @ 1080p competitive settings. The other games are completely fine from a fps standpoint as well. The people trashing the laptop for being bad at gaming need to read a little more before they buy. If you wanted a "good gaming laptop" to play all the latest titles at high frame rates you needed to spend about a thousand to fifteen hundred more.I'm amazed that a laptop that costed about $200 less than my last ... MoreBought this for my daughter to play Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite. Very happy with this laptop

Firstly great service from Scan, constant order updates and delivered in less than 24 hours.Very happy with the performance of this laptop. Decided to go with the 3070 to get a bit more power but still at a decent budget price. So far it's running everything very smoothly, even off the external hard drive I'm using. One of my main reasons for a laptop was portability and this delivers quite well, it is extremely light and compact for the power it has.A few things to note, I was playing for about 5 hours the other night and noticed the battery had dropped to 86% whilst plugged in... shouldn't be an issue unless you plan to play for a lot longer than that. This laptop can get quite loud with the fans working at full hit, so if you're looking for a quiet laptop, ... MoreFirstly great service from Scan, constant order updates and delivered in less than 24 hours.Very happy with the performance of this laptop. It does cool very well though, not seen the GPU temps above 75 yet.The thing fires up in seconds, faster than my desktop, annoyingly.I am and intend to use this purely for gaming.A bit of bloatware on it as with every off the rack computer, but nothing too horrendous... maybe Norton.. ew.Overall a very good 3070 laptop at a decent price point, a great alternative to a custom build which will probably set you back another 50% on top.
