AKG D5S Supercardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone with On/Off Switch

(75 reviews)

The D5S has the same mechanical, electrical, and acoustic characteristics as the D 5 and features a noiseless on/off switch. The D5S dynamic vocal microphone delivers a powerful sound even on the noisiest stage. A superb mic for lead and backing vocals. Its supercardioid polar pattern ensures maximum gain before feedback. The mic stands for a crisp sound that cuts through every mix. The thickness of the microphone's diaphragm varies across its diameter. The Laminated Varimotion diaphragm deep-drawing process allows the diaphragm itself to be fine-tuned with no extra tuning resonators, leading to a quantum leap in audio performance. The dual shock mount eliminates any kind of mechanical noise for trouble-free live use. The audience will hear nothing but the pristine sound of your voice!

Used SM58 for years. Tried this mic. Very good, crisp, clean sound. Very good microphone.

It sounds very much like an SM 58 microphone with one major exception. It will cost you about half the price to get a windscreen for it. You probably won't find one at your local music store and have to special order it. I don't like that fact AT ALL!!! So, if you want this microphone with a windscreen add an extra half to the price.

Excellent fidelity :) Excessive feedback :(

I found the AKG D5 S to have excellent fidelity at low to moderate volume. Unfortunately, I experienced excessive feedback susceptibility at higher volume levels.I performed direct A to B comparisons to a cheaper Sennheiser and also to the more expensive Shure Beta 58A. I liked the sound of this AKG better than either. However, I had excessive feedback with the AKG at higher volume. Since I purchased it primarily for high volume live performances(rock), this was a deal killer and I returned it for credit.

Excellent mic for the money

I am a drummer/vocalist and although I own a Neumann K105, I found the drums bleeding through the mic too much of the time. The AKG has a great sound, warm in the lower frequencies, brilliant in the top and a great tight pattern that never feeds back. Highly recommend for singing instrumentalists and vocalists working in small venues where feedback could be a problem. Also, sounds great with the QSC K12 powered speakers...

Good , likely buy again, ?

I really liked the price point. Straight up comparison with SM 58, D5 more directional, clearer for mid to high voices. If you need a tank and have a low voice buy a 58. Got about 3 yrs of use mounted on a mic stand for piano player before it started going out. I like the sound better than synhauser and shure when it worked. Did the stand topple, a couple of times... be gentle

Great value

I use an SM58, but was getting a lot of feedback when using it with a TC Electronics Mic Mechanic. The D5 (I got the switch model) helped eliminate it greatly. It is a clear mic with emphasis I. The highs and mids.I ended up returning the Mic Mechanic because I think it was triggering some feedback too, even though it has an anti feedback dial.I'll still keep the D5.

Reasonable Quality
6 December 2010

A powerful but very bright sounding mic. I bought it mainly for male lead vocals thinking that the brightness of the mic would be a good match for bass heavy male lead vocals. Even after adjusting EQ, sound still borders on sharp but annoyingly flat. Not much depth. The mic also runs pretty hot so prone to instant feedback especially when near speakers or monitors so that creates additional challenges in a live environment. Overall not a bad mic but I still prefer the SM58 which is not as powerful (you have to crank it up) but a warmer sounding mic and easier to handle in a live setting.

Sound quality at par with Shure SM58

I love these mics. There are specific songs I would prefer the AKG D5 over the Shure SM58. They are my two favourite microphones in this price range.

hard to beat for this price

I bought this for live flute and saxophone amplification. It's not as true sounding as my AKG 535eb but that mike is over ... and is an excellent condenser. I've always known that condensers have a truer sound than dynamic mics. Having the on off switch and quality construction this D5 has is great. I don't have to worry about it when a drunk grabs my mic and starts shrieking. I also ordered the akg c1000s because it's a battery operated condenser mic which should give me excellent flute amplification without coloring the sound. The D5 does color your sound but seems excellent for vocals with fairly full range. Worth a try.

works well for my needs

Specifically wanted a reasonably priced supercardiod mic with a switch to use with my Bose L1 Model 1S PA to help reduce feedback when the speakers are set up directly behind me. So far, it has worked well, no feedback. The switch is quiet.
