A landmark film that introduced much of the Western world to modern anime, AKIRA is a marvel of modern animation. Based on Katsuhiro Otomo's 2,000 page manga, AKIRA begins on July 16, 1988, when what was believed to be an atomic bomb was dropped on Tokyo, completely destroying the city and marking the beginning of WWIII. Thirty-one years later, Neo-Tokyo has sprung from the ruins of the old city and is experiencing a prolonged period of civil unrest caused by student uprisings, political instability, and, most destructively, biker gangs. One of the members of these biker gangs, Tetsuo, is detained by the military after a near accident with a strange young boy. After recognizing innate psychic ability in him, the military begins using Tetsuo as a test subject to channel Akira, a source of unimaginable power and the cause of the explosion that destroyed the original Tokyo. However, the military's plan backfires, and instead of locating the source of Akira's power, Tetsuo becomes a medium for it. Endowed with incredible psychic powers that make every one of his destructive impulses a reality, Tetsuo begins to go on a rampage that threatens to completely annihilate Neo Tokyo. Combining a complex science-fiction universe with intricately detailed animation and phantasmagoric images, AKIRA is a stunning visual experience and a disturbing vision of the future.

A must- have masterpiece

No anime/ movie collection is complete without Akira. If you have to ask "What's Akira?", you shouldn't be allowed to watch anime. This movie (along with Ghost in the Shell) is firmly cemented the industry outside of Japan. The picture is as good as Akira will ever be. it looks glorious. If you didn't pick it up when Pioneer distributed it 4 years ago, GET IT NOW!

If you love anime I highly recommend this movie. This is why anime is so different from western animation.

Awesome content but casing broken
7 November 2016

The content was intact and this is the edition to get. However if you are a collector, note that the case may have damage. My case was in pieces as I unwrapped the plastic. No damage to the content disks but had to find other casing.

Fantastic and a delight for the First Generation ORIGINAL STREAMLINE dubbing fans!!!
18 August 2017

I met this movie way back on VHS when only the Streamline dubbed version was available. People will say that the Pioneer dubbed version is better by being closer to the original Japanese script, but the characters just are missing some of their attraction and the engagement that you felt in the original version. Best part of Pioneer was it had been digitally remastered so it was bright and clear and the sound quality was top notch...aside from the new sounds of their voices. Ha! The 25th Anniversary Edition has Japanese, Pioneer, and the ORIGINAL Steamline dubbing which DVD and Streamline had been difficult to come by otherwise. And the sound, watch this movie loud. :) Get it and enjoy it! ...and remember, next year it will turn THIRTY and still hold its own with current Anime.
