Affordable beauty of a laptop

Finding an affordable gaming laptop can be a tall task, as the high-end models may be out of reach for casual gamers looking to save money. Dell offers a great solution with its G15 series. While it doesn't have the spectacle and fireworks of its more expensive contemporaries, the G15 provides a solid alternative for gamers on a budget.Out of the box, the G15 5525 is a thing of beauty. The body showcases several points of articulation, from its speckled light gray color and its textured outer shell, to its bright red back-lit keyboard and the cross-hatch speaker pattern inside. It is weighty but not too heavy - probably on the top end of portability but still functional. The screen brightness is acceptable with decent viewing angles, good contrast ratio, and it folds out to around 120 degrees.Performance on the G15 5525 series will vary depending on what you're doing and the games you want to run. The G15 5525 comes with Windows 11 Home, and setup takes only minutes. Browsing the web is fast and the Windows dashboard is smooth. Battery life is pretty decent as well. While it is capable of handling most games, the system comes with only 8GB of memory out of the box which is just low by today's standards. However, fiddling around with the power plan and graphics settings for a few minutes will do you a lot of good and save you some headaches as this laptop has plenty of juice to get your game on. Aside from a lot of the bloat-ware preloaded into this machine, it is a great device.Overall, the G15 5525 is an affordable alternative to some of the high-end laptops out there. It is a great option for students or on-the-go workers who want some casual gaming access on a decent machine. While not the most powerful device, it's a beauty of a laptop that's not just eye candy.

Gaming performance is pretty good, but there are oddities with Alienware firmware

Performs pretty much as desired with the build I have: RTX 3080, Ryzen 9 6800, 32GB RAM. I've been testing this out with Cyberpunk 2077 with all settings turned up (except aggressive ray tracing). It does chug a little bit when first loading up a map or another heavy graphical area. Chugging does even out after the initial load though. Dolby Atmos does actually make these speakers shine, and the sound quality is quite good. I'm honestly rather impressed with that! Coming from an MSI GS66 Stealth, this machine does perform pretty well. The LEDs that light your power button, lid Alienware logo, keyboard, and the ring around the ports on the back, are pretty customizable and cool. The cons are mostly personal nitpicks or firmware oddities.Keyboard: I don't love the ... MorePerforms pretty much as desired with the build I have: RTX 3080, Ryzen 9 6800, 32GB RAM. I preferred the scissor switches used in the MSI GS66 Stealth. They have a shorter travel distance and feel like they need a lot less force to actuate, despite not being mechanical. Not ALL parts of your keycaps will light up. eg. the numerals in the number row light up with shine-through characters, but their shift-key characters DO NOT, so if you don't have those memorized and need to type one of those characters in dim lighting, you'll need to turn on some lights. Same thing with the Function keys, the Fkeys are lit up, but their laptop Fn functions don't.Firmware: Sometimes, on startup from a full shutdown, my own LED lighting profiles don't take, and will fall back to the default blue lighting scheme. I'm still not sure why it does this on some start-ups. I've also had issues where screen brightness starts up TOO bright, and then when I go to adjust the brightness, the visual meter pops up and appears to be adjusting in value, but don't actually change my screen brightness at all.Sleep mode is also a bit of an odd one, though it's not uncommon for laptops to experience sleep issues (see LTT's video on laptop sleep mode and why it's been an issue lately). This laptop has the tendency to suddenly fire up its fans for a split second while it's in sleep mode, and it will do this in regular intervals, so I tend to have to fully shut it down if I don't want it waking me up.

Good Entry Level Gaming Laptop, but Chunky

I can't tell, but I assume the drive is PCIE Gen4 (latest) speed, and the graphics card memory is listed as DDR6.This laptop is Chunky with a Captial C, and heavy. This is not a form factor you might be used for the notebook that's also a gaming laptop, i.e. thin, light, powerful, and very very hot when gaming. This is more like the standard gaming laptop case from 5 or so years ago. The speckling on the off-white plastic caught me off guard, but now it's growing on me, I kind of like it. Reminds me of cookies and cream. The screen is nice, 1080p, capable of fast refresh, not overly bright, but gets the job done. The hinge on the screen comes in a little on each side, be careful not to get something stuck in there when closing the laptop. Now for the guts. I took the back off and added an 8gb DDR5 stick in to the open memory slot on the laptop. 16gb of ram works a lot better for many of the tasks a gaming laptop will be tasked to do. 8gb is the absolute minimum and consider upgrading to 16gb as the first (and cheapest) thing to do if you think you need more oomph out of this laptop. When having the back off, you will notice that there is only a place for ONE SSD drive slot, which is of course taken by the mini 512GB drive that this laptop comes with. Again, 512GB is the bare minimum for a gaming laptop, I really think they should have gone with a 1TB drive to start. Because you can't just add a second drive in here, it's much more of a process to move to a bigger drive than just adding a 2nd memory stick like I did.The sound is pretty good for a laptop, but I usually wear over the ear cans when using my laptops, there is a headset jack for the wired versions, and a USB-C connector for the all-purpose wireless headsets. Bluetooth is also an option. The wireless Wi-Fi card is AX, so plenty of speed if you got the router for it.Speaking of the USB-C connector, it is on the back with the HDMI port, the charger plug port, and one USB-A standard connector. So, if minimalist look is your goal, you can pretty much hide all your important connections behind the laptop. As far as gaming, this is entry level with an entry level graphics card, the 3050, with a definitely entry level amount of graphics ram at 4GB. It did well on Forza Horizon 5 at medium settings at native 1080p resolution looking good, kept the frames per second from dropping too low. The "G" button (press Function Key and F9) on the keyboard will boost the fans to the max to help out on intensive use. It will get fairly hot when going full tilt, but not as much as say a notebook style gaming laptop. You should be able to play older games with most of the bells and whistles set on high.I recommend this laptop for entry gaming, but would recommend adding 8GB of ram to make it perform a bit better all around.

This laptop has the tendency to suddenly fire up its fans for a split second while it's in sleep mode, and it will do this in regular intervals, so I tend to have to fully shut it down if I don't want it waking me up.

Good Entry Level Gaming Laptop, but Chunky

This entry level gaming laptop game packaged well and comes with a big 180w charger brick. The connector on the charger is the same barrel plug that has been on most Dell Laptops for at least the last decade and a half. But if you plug in an older/lower wattage dell charger with the same plug, and try to power on this laptop, it will quickly remind you that that 80 or 90w charger isn't going to do the trick long term. The hardware is from 2022 releases, with the newest Ryzen 5 CPU generation, and DDR5 for the system memory. I can't tell, but I assume the drive is PCIE Gen4 (latest) speed, and the graphics card memory is listed as DDR6.This laptop is Chunky with a Captial C, and heavy.

Mid range gaming contender w/ design quirks

This laptop is the first Dell that I've had in my hands for quite some time, and they have definitely weathered the reduction in PC manufacturers and the pandemic with flying colors. This G15 fits what I understood their gaming series to consist of, which are mostly business laptops with upgraded components. This one in particular is strangled by only have 8gb of RAM, which isn't enough in 2022 and running windows 11, unfortunately. The build is solid business fare, but clocking in a little on the chunky side for thickness and weight. The added red backlit keys are nice, but somehow only serve to make this laptop look more like something you brought home from work. Full disclosure, I had no idea I was so hung up on the appearance of gaming laptops until I started using this one. Even the marbled light colored plastic with red accents struck me as a little off. One advantage the chunkiness does bring is room for cooling, and that's apparent in the placement of the rear exhaust grills, that take up a fair amount of space where I would have expected more connectivity on the sides. In fact, this brings me to the next thing that causes me so much concern on this laptop - the number of ports that stick straight off the back of this laptop. In most of my desk, temporary desk, or other setups, I don't like having cables that plug into the rear of the laptop and then stick STRAIGHT out to the rear. Unfortunately this includes the single USB-C slot and the HDMI and Power connections. There are 2 USB-A ports on the side, which is appreciated, but having all those ports through the rear of the chunky case is a major annoyance. Graphics performance is admirable with the Nvidia RTX3050 mobile, and while the SSD is on the small side at 0.5 TB, it's still plenty fast enough to keep up with loading games, audio, and cut scenes to be appreciated. The 8gb of RAM still makes this unit fall down however, and I feel it any time the fans start to spin faster.

New And NOT Improved

Dell is here to remind us all, once again, that calling something a "Gaming Laptop" doesn't make something a gaming laptop. More specifically, it looks like they are offering a reduced specification clone of their G15 release from a year ago (which is still available and is less expensive). Both laptops are solid and attractive and well-suited for most power users out there but this new model has a mid-grade AMD Ryzen 5 series processor which offers less exceptional performance than last year's release with the more responsive Ryzen 7 processor. Both machines still stand in the shadow of the amazing older Dell G7 17 gaming laptop (no longer available). This new model still has 8 gigabytes system memory and 4 gigabytes of video memory; both models sport the NVIDIA ... MoreDell is here to remind us all, once again, that calling something a "Gaming Laptop" doesn't make something a gaming laptop. But the price of its predecessor has dropped to well below the new release price here.Calling this a gaming laptop is a stretch, but it's a well-functioning and desirable laptop. Stellar Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, great sound, rock-solid construction. It's an enjoyable computer to use as a laptop in every way as long as you aren't planning to rely on it for truly taxing program or video processing. Unfortunately, I think its price might be a little aggressive for its capabilities.Hard to recommend this when the 2021 version is still around with clearly better performance for hundreds less.

SOLID GAMING LAPTOP THAT PERFORMS GREAT!!
9 August 2022

I have had the chance to play around with the laptop and it has been very surprisingly capable for all my tasks and handles gaming very well.Out of the box all i needed to do was update the apps and install system updates and it was ready to go. There is a lot to like with this system, the build quality is great, very sturdy and feels very durable. The back-lit keys is a nice touch especially with black keys and the key travel and click are very satisfying. The sound system is really surprising, it sounds louder than you would think, it is clear and has some bass to it. If you are watching videos, movies or music videos...its actually pretty good if you are just jamming on your own in a private workspace. If you are looking to shake the windows or rumble the desk ... MoreI have had the chance to play around with the laptop and it has been very surprisingly capable for all my tasks and handles gaming very well.Out of the box all i needed to do was update the apps and install system updates and it was ready to go. If you are looking to shake the windows or rumble the desk than obviously you need external speakers but its nice sounds if you travel with your laptop for any hotel room acoustics. The display is plenty bright and has good refresh rate which is very nice for gaming and actually pretty nice when watching fast action movies, no motion blur. The field of view is pretty good, mnot much loss if viewing at a side angle but the optimum spot is right in front. The gameplay was very good for this priced laptop, i played COD modern warfare, the first gameplay and install took a little long to setup especially the shaders but once the install was complete the game play was pretty smooth. I only noticed a slight freeze a couple of times but it was not consistent everytime i played so it seems isolated.I do wish the hard drive and ram were larger as i believe it would enhance the gameplay and performance. I wish it had a secondary NVME drive but it does not, you have to cone the C drive in order to expand. OVERALL it is a great Laptop and it gives the look and feel of a quality laptop, it will work for all your needs and it will be great if you can add some ram and update the hard drive size.I wont comment on windows 11 because i am not good enough navigating it to rate its performance or contribution to this laptop.

Semi-Good Gaming Laptop with short life expectancy

I had purchased this computer back in September 2022 and it’s now May, so about 9 months and I had upgraded the computer to 32 gb ram which is the maximum it can go and 1 tb of storage. So I’ve invested a lot because I was planning on using it until I moved out of my house in a year or so. However, the computer is already starting to break down and I have taken it to the computer repair shop at least 3 times. In order to play games you need to constantly have keep it plugged in order to have the optimum performance, but in exchange it leads to poor battery life which is not good. I had purchased a cool pad due to the fans not working well and causing the laptop to overheat, but it still doesn’t help because the computer heats up very quickly and I can hardly play ... MoreI had purchased this computer back in September 2022 and it’s now May, so about 9 months and I had upgraded the computer to 32 gb ram which is the maximum it can go and 1 tb of storage. I had purchased a cool pad due to the fans not working well and causing the laptop to overheat, but it still doesn’t help because the computer heats up very quickly and I can hardly play games like Vanilla Minecraft on the lowest graphic setting without it overheating. The charger doesn’t fit completely inside, poor model design (In the picture, it’s hard to tell, but I am pushing the charger and that’s as far as it goes). As well as a slow start up since purchase. Everything I’m stating is unbiased because I genuinely think this laptop in terms of performance is great and I’m actually really sad that my laptop is barely surviving only after 9 months. I wish this laptop could’ve been better in terms of quality of life I would’ve saved a lot of money because it’s a very cheap laptop despite being able to perform pretty nicely on games and I would’ve easily recommend it for someone whose purchasing their first gaming laptop. Overall, this laptop is very high maintenance and requires a lot of modifications and I wouldn’t recommend it for people new to laptops or anyone at all purely because the amount of effort needed to keep it lasting longer.

Solid Performance on a Budget

Opening the box and my first impression was I was not fond of the color. It's a light gray with dark speckles. My second impression was that it felt well build, being a bit on the heavy side. The next thing that stood out to me was that the AC adapter was huge! Powering up the orange backlit keyboard added a nice glow, but I would've preferred a dark finish on the laptop. It is, after all a gaming laptop and the color scheme just didn't reflect that. Maybe that's just me...The external layout consists of left side ethernet port, 3.5mm audio jack and battery indicator light, two USB Type-A ports on the right side, and a USB-A, full sized HDMI port, USB-C, and AC adapter port in the back. I definitely like the power port in the back as opposed to some that place it ... MoreOpening the box and my first impression was I was not fond of the color. It's a light gray with dark speckles. I definitely like the power port in the back as opposed to some that place it on the side, where it gets in the way of other accessories, such as a mouse. The 15.6-inch FHD IPS display offers up to 120 Hz refresh rates, which is solid. The screen does a reasonable job when watching movies or gaming. There's little light bleeding around the edges, the colors are decent, and the blacks are black. Viewing angles are good on the IPS panel, with little to no washing out of the colors. Dell shaved a bit of expense here with the display, but while it's not the brightest of displays, the contrast is good.Keyboard layout is good, as is the feel of the keys. The keyboard includes a number pad, though on a gaming laptop I'm not sure what the point is. Above the keyboard there are cutouts for the speakers, which are underwhelming. External speakers or a headset will be much more satisfying as there's little base from the speakers and overall, it sounds rather tinny. The combination of the AMD 6600H processor with an nVidia RTX 3050 GPU performed well for a budget gaming laptop. You should be able to play all games without much issue, though some of the more demanding games may require some sacrifice in graphics quality to maintain higher framerates. Destiny 2, While not a particularly demanding game, performed at a solid 80-90 FPS with the default "high" graphics settings. The G15 should have no issues with popular games such as Fortnite, Rocket League, etc. For example, Apex Legends ran at 60 FPS on Very High/Ultimate, but Metro Exodus ran at 10 FPS on the same setting. Reducing settings to Medium allowed for 40 FPS.A performance mode can also be activated by hitting the special ‘G’ key (F9) that ups the clock speeds and the fans to deliver the best performance. There is also a mode that allows you to fully switch off the integrated graphics so that the system only uses the Nvidia GPU. This helps in giving a slight boost in performance, especially while gaming. Unfortunately access to change this setting must be done by entering the BIOS.The M.2 SSD offers 500GB of storage. These days, that's the minimum as after installing a few games storage capacity will be strained. Same with the memory -- the 8GB is the absolute minimum, the G15 will benefit from adding another 8GB.For the price, the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition is good, but I would recommend going for at least 16GB of memory for steady performance as 8GB simply doesn’t do the G15 justice, budget machine or not. Not only will the extra memory help when gaming, it will also make a significant difference for web browsing, especially if you're like me and often have a lot of browser tabs/windows open. For those that are looking for something that isn’t too expensive, but powerful enough to handle everyday tasks as well as most gaming titles with ease, the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition is not going to disappoint. The AMD Ryzen 5600H is a capable CPU which can deliver very good performance, and it pairs well with the RTX 3050 GPU.

Solid construction but short on memory

I recently received the Dell G15 gaming laptop powered by the AMD Ryzen 5 6600H CPU, 8 GB DDR5 4800 GHz RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU and a 512GB Hynix NVMe drive stick.Initial performance test scores using Passmark Performance Test 10.2 (so you can compare to your current rig) are posted in the pictures. There's not alot for space for games with a 512GB NVMe disk - so you'll have to upgrade/add a drive to keep them loaded and handy. After added my two games plus Sniper Elite 5, I'm down to 32 GB free.So - after the games loaded and the laptop was fully charged, I grabbed my XBox controller and heading out on the porch to play a little. The quick story is that in playing Forza Horizon 5, I ran out of system memory quickly (see picture), and the graphics because sluggish and lagging - sometimes freezing momentarily. In less than an hour - I received a low battery warning.Back into the house to plug in and take a quick flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator - I experienced lagging graphics during game play as well.Thinking ahead - I order 32GB of DDR5 4800Ghz memory and in arrived within a day. I installed the memory today and testing the game play again. Forza Horizon 5 ran more smoothly, and non memory errors. Same with Microsoft Flight Simulator - much more smoothly.I will mention that the sound on this system is AWESOME. It's loud and broad. Well done there!Overall, I'd recommend this device/processor combination - but would highly recommend budgeting in for 32GB RAM and planning ahead for a hard drive upgrade or USB-C external drive.

The perfect budget laptop for a college student...

I love the New Dell G15 gaming laptop, The design is reminiscent of an Alienware laptop powered by an AMD Ryzen5 6600H and an Nvidia RTX 3050. For normal use, you would never hear the laptop fans spin up. It has two large heatsinks fed from the top and bottom and exhausted in the back. The cooling system is more than adequate that in an hour-long fragging session, the overall temperature was in the high 80s, which is darn right cool for a gaming laptop.Unboxing the Dell laptop with minimalistic and eco-friendly packaging included only a few things. A 180W power supply, the laptop and two sheets with the warranty information and quick setup. The overall packaging reminds you that this isn't a top-of-the-line laptop, but once you get the laptop in your hands and open that screen for the first time, you will realise that the packaging is just eco-friendly and that the laptop is the real deal. The laptop setup into windows 11 is painless as it comes. There is not a whole lot of bloatware installed by default from Dell. Mcafee antivirus is provided with a 30-day license, and that is about it. The laptop is pretty much stock as it comes to windows 11. On the front end, Windows 11 takes a bit of getting used to. For instance, to get to the task manager, you need to press WindowsKey + X, to bring up a quick launch menu that allows you to select an application you require. Other than that, Windows 11 is quite stable. Running both windows updates and Dell updates will add some fixes, including bios and video card driver updates, and that is pretty much about it. Windows 11 is here to stay, and we might as well get used to the centre start button. So before I proceed, I did run into an issue, and if you run into this exact issue, two simple fixes exist depending on your needs. I reached out to Dell, and while it does not seem it is a hardware issue based on all the testing I have done, it was a nagging issue that was ultimately resolved by turning off a feature in the browser. It seems that there is a bug in the “hardware acceleration” feature of Chrome and Edge browsers (and anything else that uses hardware acceleration in Chromium-based browsers, so this includes Brave and Vivaldi). This problem does not seem to exist in Firefox. However, this bug manifests itself when you load a website that has video playing, be it youtube, or your local news website. The moment the video loads, the browser will crash, the computer will hang, and you are left with a frozen computer that a hard shutdown can only remedy by holding the power button. The solution to the fix can be done in two ways. Turn off hardware acceleration in your browser, to do that, go into edge://settings/system for edge or chrome://settings/system for chrome and turn off hardware acceleration. Your browser experience will not change, and the only place I saw an issue was in WebGL aquarium test. When you turn it off, the CPU does more work, but you got plenty of processing power to compensate for the lack of hardware acceleration in your browser. This problem does not manifest in all the games I tried or any other application. The alternate option is to go into the bios (F2 on boot) and “disable” the ‘enable hybrid graphics’ under ‘advanced’. This stops the onboard Radeon chip from being the graphics card and offloads all the graphics to the Nvidia RTX 3050. The result is a much more noisy experience as the RTX 3050 takes much more energy, and your battery life drops.Outside of that little nagging issue in the web browser, my experience was amazing. I love using this laptop for gaming. The RTX 3050 shines in all the latest FPS, RPG, and MMORPG games. Pushing over 120+ fps on CSGO, 90+ fps on DOTA2, and 90+ fps on MSFSX.This is a great all-around laptop. You can do your homework, you can do your gaming. It's perfect for a college student going away to college for the first time. It has enough processing power to keep them happy, enough cooling to be reliable, and enough storage to be useful. Sure, 8GB of ram is a tad bit low, but you can easily upgrade your ram and hard drive. There are eight screws on the bottom that opens up to reveal the upgrade options. So if you are looking for an all arounder laptop for your child or yourself
 this is it.
