First of all. The Service Dell has provided made this process very easy and enjoyable. The Dell website itself has utilized features that allowed for my drivers to be updated properly. I am not sure if this was intended, but the mechanical sound is left with a horrific metal-clacking sound that is not the ideal mechanical keyboard after-tone. In fact, it makes it difficult to type this review for me, even. I heard test-sounds of this keyboard from other reviewers, and it did not sound like this. If I could, I would take back that option, but hopefully this can be something to fix in the future. The computer itself runs beautifully. It took multiple driver installations and restarts, but it is in great shape. The RGB customization for the Stadium, Keyboard, Power Key, etc. are thoughtful and ideal for the gaming experience. I have one last urge from those who may consider this review: please fix the quality of sound from laptop, alongside the camera itself. I know that for gamers, these are incredibly minor setbacks that are usually handled with external cameras, and headphones. However, for the price of the laptop, the expectation should be the best quality sound and camera -- which I am led to believe can be better perfected (even if it may mean sacrificing another feature). My old gaming laptop, though it was a budget laptop, had incredible sound and camera that really made all the difference for me. I urge you to consider making these changes. Nonetheless, I am loving this laptop. I love the FHD quality, the SupportAssist feature, the build of laptop itself, and even features like this where I can thoughtfully review your product. Thank you for your time!

This is a very expensive, but very powerful gaming laptop. As it is an Alienware the build quality is top notch. There is absolutely zero creaking or flexing. It is built very, very well.In terms of the actual use experience the X17 has some caveats though. The first is that the trackpad is unusually small (by today's standards) for such a large 17.3" laptop. The keyboard is excellent even if it's not the Cherry MX mechanical one. The typing has a satisfying depth and good feedback. The only issue here is that secondary functions on the function key row aren't backlight, which can make it hard in dim environment to find certain controls like brightness. The screen at 4K is super sharp with excellent color reproduction and brightness. Watching content, playing games or even reading articles from the web is nothing short of delightful. My unit had some backlight bleed, but it wasn't really noticeable at all during normal use. The camera while not 1080p is serviceable and Windows Hello works very well.I really enjoy the Legend design language and styling that Alienware employs with the X series. The X17 is without a doubt the flagship model and the contrast between the Lunar Light and dark interior is stunning. Especially when you turn on all that RGB! The ring on the back is incredibly bright and it makes the laptop look like a spaceship when you see it from the rear.On to the negatives. While the laptop is a top performer you will find that you have to do some tweaking to the power profiles using tools like Throttlestop or XTU. Dell likes to let their CPUs fly and you will notice that the i9 in this will readily and happily crank up all the way to top boost speeds until it hits 100 celsius. The GPU always stays cool, but sometimes it's a game to keep the CPU in check (if you care about that at all). The cooling system is very good and does a great job in such a thin chassis. The fans tend to sound on the whiny/whistlely side so it's a good idea to play with headphones on if that bothers you. The speakers are pretty good by gaming laptop standards but cannot compete with the likes of the Asus Scar series or the bigger Razer laptops. I recommend you play with the X17 on an elevated stand or with the back propped up so that air can get in underneath it more effectively. The power adapter is a good size considering that it packs high wattages and is slim enough to slip into bags. On the issue of size though the X17 has a very big footprint. It's bigger than most of the other current gen 17.3" gaming laptops due to the extended rear end that is part of the cooling system. Because of this and the premium metal chassis the X17 is a little heavier compared to say an Asus Scar 17 or even an MSI GE77/78. All this means that it might not fit your current backpack! I had to end up getting an Alienware Horizon Travel backpack (which are of fantastic quality and design) in order to be able to transport this baby.Overall, the Alienware X17 R2 is a beautiful, well made gaming laptop. It offers really good performance, a lovely screen, good expandability, but at the same time it is a bit big and the fans can get a little annoying due to their tendency to whistle. Nonetheless, it is a good buy especially if you can get it on sale. The RTX 3080 that it packs is still powerful and a good GPU.

The Computer gets crazy hot. When I say crazy hot I mean it is almost uncomfortable to have your fingers on the WSAD keys. The Fans are super loud, It sounds like a mini jet engine, and still fails to cool the computer to an acceptable level. However the most inexcusable is that the Speakers are of the lowest quality of any computer laptop I have ever had. When I saw low quality speakers I mean absolute trash. It sounds like the speakers are blown about 50% of the time, there is no rhyme or reason as to what causes them to sound bad they just do. Mind you the fans are so loud that it does not help with the sound quality. Additionally as of late I have had the Blue Screen of Death happen 5-6 times for a computer that is only a few months old. As a power user I have to admit that this is the most powerful computer I have ever owned. I am running a six monitor configuration and the graphics performance is butter smooth. With this laptop I have achieved my goal of replacing my desktop computer with something more powerful and it is indeed an upgrade. I already scratched the cover by accident and am really bummed about that. The speakers are really poor sounding but I don't use them very often. The laptop can get super hot and this became an issue for a call to customer support help line. The laptop had performed a firmware update via its own update software. Following that update, the laptop back became extremely hot well over 100 degrees and the cooling fans refused to turn on. Customer support was great at helping me get this fixed by getting me booted into bios to restore the default performance settings and then running another firmware update. That fix solved the overheating with no fan issue, kudos to customer support! I am a happy customer!

The Overheating Soaked to the Trackpad, power button and the Keyboard was Untouchable, My fingers BURNED. I TRIED to reach Support in many ways But I got No answer for 2 days Until I found the WhatsApp. Right now I'm having Problems on my Work because this machine. I'll need to wait 2 more weeks Just for them to figure that giving me a Replacement is valid?! This infuriating and a total Dissapointment... Premium Warranty? It doesn't matter how many Grands I Invested on this?! I Wont claim a Refund yet Only because I NEED power. I had Alienware on a pedestal for more than a Decade and this was going to be my Special First experience with it. I keep being treated like a Sheep. I keep considering showing the world my experience on internet. I'm talking about the RTX 3080 ti 16 gb. 64 GB 4800 Ram. I9 12900. 4k Screen. Cherry keyboard. I went all out and yet somehow.. it feels like a Refurbished machine. Also the Speakers throw Broken/muffled sound at only 40% volume. The screen also has backlight leakeage. I can Only trust the Replacement WILL BE in Perfect state and with an extra compensation.

I've been using my new Alienware x17 R2 Gaming Laptop for a few weeks now and it's excellent. The CPU, RAM and SSD's work together to deliver high performance and fast response times.Disk Space: I was concerned that 4TB wouldn't be quite enough space for everything I like to have handy but have now installed a 1TB microSDXC, and with bitlocker turned on it's a good way of securely storing large but rarely used files - read speed is adequate at around 90mb/sec. Total storage now 5TB.Processing Power: I didn't really need the i9 processor, since it's just an i7 with a slightly faster clock speed, but to get the 64GB DDR5 RAM the i9 has to be specified. Total storage now 5TB.Processing Power: I didn't really need the i9 processor, since it's just an i7 with a slightly faster clock speed, but to get the 64GB DDR5 RAM the i9 has to be specified. I use Lightroom and Photoshop and regularly see about 40GB of RAM in use. When running HDR merge of multiple photos, this now takes about 20 seconds, compared to a couple of minutes on my previous PC - an Inspiron 17 (Gen 8 i7). This is a huge time saving if 50+ merges are to be done.Fan Noise - run the i9 CPU at 100% for more than a few seconds and the fan speed will increase dramatically, with accompanying higher noise levels. It's not that loud, and I'd choose the high performance with fan noise over a slower PC every time.LED bling - fortunately the LED bling can be turned off. This is especially important for the back panel where most of the connections are located - there's no labels and the black ports are difficult to see in normal lighting - and nearly impossible to see in the glare of the bright LED trim around the rear panel.GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. You have to read the documentation carefully to find that the RTX 3080 Ti is used only for a monitor plugged into the HDMI port. It's not used to run the inbuilt screen - the onboard Intel Iris XE graphics processor is powerful enough for this. So don't go out and buy the latest USB-C 4k monitor to use with your new x17 R2 - it won't use the 3080 Ti!4TB Storage. The 4TB RAID 0 (2x 2TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD) storage is amazingly fast - it's rare for me to see it at 100% usage for more than a second or two. Note that if Windows Pro 11 is ordered, the system will arrive with bitlocker turned on.Portability - I have settled on 17" screens as my preferred size, and the x17 R2 is remarkably thin, and the weight is acceptable. Years ago I had an Alienware 17X - it was twice as thick, and heavier. So the x17 R2 is a good balance of high performance, yet portable.Overall I'm very happy with this PC, especially since a careful look at some competitors' offerings at similar prices can reveal some slightly out of date components such as only DDR4 RAM. Everything in the X17 R2 is high performance!

Even the engineer commented on how bad the trackpad is in this unit. The Display: I think I've probably used about 30 or 40 lcd displays and I am used to backlight bleed, however the bleed on laptop is yellow rather than white and is very noticable on black scenes and rather than huge areas, seemed to concentrate in small spots making it alot more noticable. I complained to dell and they said that its simply the panel I chose (4K) and replacing it wont make a difference. Its a shame because everything else on the laptop is very, very good but as you can imagine the 3 most interactive parts of the laptop are all a downgrade from previous generation alienware laptops. I would have recommend the m17 r3 as probably my best laptop experience ever, unfortunately the "cost cutting" on a very expensive laptop really lowers the overall experience.
Dear Alienware! It appears that there is no option in Bios to enable virtualization which is a native feature of the CPU that is installed in this laptop. It appears that the feature is not enabled by default either so it is a waste of 64GB RAMS which in this amount on the laptop would not be utilized by even the most experienced multitaskers - internet (pages names would not be readable on even 3 screens arranged in landscape mode), games - you can't be playing 2 games at once and it is pointless to keep 10 of them running in the background at the same time either as it takes 30 seconds to load one thus keeping things cooler. This is not a desktop server to keep it running for years to utilize those of RAMs this is a portable LAPTOP. The only reasonable application ... MoreDear Alienware! This is not a desktop server to keep it running for years to utilize those of RAMs this is a portable LAPTOP. The only reasonable application for 64GB rams is virtualization. Nowhere on the Alienware website does it tell that 12900H high performance CPU that is installed in this machine would be limited in such a way that VT-x would not be enabled. Other Alienware laptops had an option in Bios to enable virtualization so why going back in time in this modern age of Cloud computing which is based on virtualization and hyperthreading, but never mind the hyperthreading!? I would not consider giving this laptop to my child as a present as he can't use it for studies and I don't mean internet or text editors as any tablet provides those features - programmers have always used "sandboxes" when optimizing their software to make sure that it won't corrupt their OS which they are programming in and configuration designs are tested on the VMs before sending it into production. Even the option of Windows Pro (points to the fact that it is a professional machine) is useless here as -Hyper-V is not supporting nested virtualization because of VT-x being disabled and maybe, just maybe would a gamer really need to connect to a domain controller to utilize those security features provided by Windows Pro. I am very disappointed having to contact Support and I am still waiting for the resolution of this case.
I've always wanted an Alienware computer. I started my own business recently and purchased this to be my work laptop. I really was just looking for something with enough CPUs and RAM to be able to run a bunch of VM's for development and testing, but I suspect I will start playing games on this eventually. My younger nephews seemed pretty impressed with this and were delighted with the RGB keyboard. I think they might be jealous. We are planning to try Apex Legends on it later.I've had it about 3 weeks now and so far it performs exceptionally. Starts up fast, breezes through the internet, of course depends on your internet speed. Installs things fast. Was able to run a few VM's and have multiple things going on with no issues.Speakers do sound a little muffled. ... MoreI've always wanted an Alienware computer. Starts up fast, breezes through the internet, of course depends on your internet speed. Installs things fast. Was able to run a few VM's and have multiple things going on with no issues.Speakers do sound a little muffled. Battery does not last much more than a few hours before I have to plug it in, even just listening to YouTube and working on spreadsheets. It does get a little hot on my thighs, which may be good in the winter. There are some power settings I saw that you can adjust though. The only thing I changed so far was turn off the lights in the back. It makes it hard to find and see the USB ports when the lights are on. Also, the processor model for this machine is 12900H, NOT 12900HK as described. This laptop is a little large and does not fit in my backpack. I wish the keyboard had a 10 key number pad thing on the right, but I can do without it.I plan on getting a curved monitor, cause I've always wanted one of those as well, a mechanical keyboard and mouse to use with a dock sometime in the future. At a minimum, I got something I've always wanted, and it will make a great business expense/tax deduction.
