These are my favorite Altras by far. I ran a trail half in them this past Sunday (11/19), and the Superior 5s did not disappoint. This is my second pair. I put 50+ mi/week on my first pair starting in August, and there is no wear on the lugs yet. They are stable on technical terrain, have the right amount of cushion for me (minimal), and are maximally flexible. They even come with removable rock plates. I always go up half a size, because my feet never seem to fit runners in my true size, but I've heard that these fit true to size. The only thing I've noticed is that I have to double-knot the laces so they don't come untied. I haven't tried the Superior 6 yet. I think I'll keep buying up pairs of the 5s until they all fall apart.

The breathability and softer ankle surround make this a favorite so far! Olympus had no tongue padding and Lone Peaks could use more cushion underfoot - for me and my mass / running style!For sizing reference: i wear US11E2 / EUR45 in work safety boots, US11.5 / EUR 46 in every other Altra, but US12 / EUR46.5 is this Timp 4.I would argue this is closer to 'slim' foot shape. Add 1/2 size and best trail runners yet!A balance must be struck between protection from the ground and destroying your own other ankle if you bump it with this tread! Worth it with this level of traction / cushion combo. May replace Lone Peaks for softground super muddy conditions ~~ tbd!

I bought the Timp 4s for a big ultra race. Before the race I had only put 30km on them in training. At first glance, they are great shoes and aesthetically very pleasing but they did not last. Instead they fell apart before my eyes, mid race! When I got home, I sat down to take a closer look at the damage: the glue had come away from the lugs on both shoes, leaving them flapping around; the seam had completely come away on the right shoe and the same was starting to happen on the left; the mesh (which more or less covers the whole shoe) was virtually non-existent along the base of the shoe; and (finally) the remaining lugs were almost completely worn down. I salvaged the laces and the insole and the shoes went in the bin! Couldn't quite believe it - they had done ... MoreI bought the Timp 4s for a big ultra race. I prefer a lower arch, usually using zero drop, but most lower profile shoes only last me a couple of months, as I average 60-100 miles a week, depending on my training. However, these were very durable, taking 500 miles of seriously tough trail before the tread became too worn to wear. The drains re a brilliant idea. I was highly skeptical at first, as I doubted they would be very functional. however, I could run right through streams during a trail run and within a few steps on the bank, the shoes would drain the water rather than hold it, saving me the typical weight of a soaked shoe.The biggest issues with the shoes ... And lastly, the material of the shoe itself ripped after about 10 weeks, the seam along the inside of the shoe. Honestly, I kept running in them for a good month longer without noticing much difference, but a little more durability would be a huge benefit.All in all, I absolutely love Altras. As an ultra-runner, I am a bit of a shoe fanatic and there is no other brand that has satisfied me as Altras do. Nothing else hugs my foot quite like these. I just ordered the Superiors. I have never tried them before, but I am excited to compare. Thank you, Altra, for your dedication to making high quality footwear for trail runners, as that is a category so many other brands dare not attempt.
I thought I had finally found the perfect running shoe for me. The Timp 4 is so comfortable, honestly it was a joy to put them on. I bought them in winter in Alaska so I didn't wear them outside much, mostly just to drive into town. Once the snow melted I went on one trail hike and the mesh on the edge of the sole started pulling loose. It didn't look great but I was hopeful it wouldn't get worse. I continued to baby them but after a few more trail walks the lower sides of the shoe began to fray and then just pull apart. I'm so disappointed, I thought I had found the perfect shoes for my feet. These were my first Altras but the durability was so poor I'm not sure I can justify trying another pair.
Purchased these on 27/05/23 from an ALTRA authorised dealer (Made to Run St Helens) for use on Total Warrior 01/07/23 @ Branham Park. The good; I broke them in over June and I suffered no injuries/blisters wearing them for the event. The bad; After Total Warrior I washed the shoes by hand (warm water) and dried them naturally in a warm area. I put the laces back in and then went to put the insoles back in. On doing so I felt the inside top of the toe guard rubber material hanging down over the big toe, and the second one to that in the left shoe (the right was fine). The rubberised toe guard appears to be constructed by adding a thin rubber strip to the inside/outside toe area and glueing the shoe material between these thin strips. Given the cost of these shoes its very disappointing that they're not up to the job having only completed 23 miles in them.

He does not wear the shoe to run, but only as an occasional shoe for walking around town etc. As others have stated, the sides of both shoes blew out after about 4-5months of light wear. A local shoe rep. encouraged me to write a review for Altra. The shoe rep. stated this must be a design flaw in the shoe, because he hears the same complaint about this shoe consistently. Again, my partner loves this shoe, but I can't afford to buy a shoe at this price point as a gift every year after only light use. I loved the Timp 2! The Timp 3's had a weird issue where the toe box was tight right over when my big toe meets the foot and it hurt to run in them -no good for me. Then came the Timp 4's and at first I knew they wouldn't work for me because the tongue had absolutely no padding and I couldn't even walk around the house in them without feeling they were uncomfortable on the top of my foot. But there weren't other good options for 0 drop and wide toe box (after trying Topo and just not loving the Pursuit and worrying they weren't working for me) so I came back and gave them a chance, but I cannot tie up the shoes without getting pain in my metatarsals. So I tried adding my own extra padding between the tongue and laces and they are bearable for a short run, but it's ... MoreI loved the Timp 2! I also find the Timp 2's only last me about 400km, which is 3-4 months, ONLY. I haven't been able to wear the Timp 4's long enough, but I seriously doubt they will last, with the drainage tracts in the sole. Frankly they are just dumb. It's a trail shoe, you're going to get wet, and water goes both ways. Now there is just a useless hole in the sole that seems like it is a weak spot to me, and just gimicky. Can we just get a nice grippy sole that will last a while? Please go "back" to the Timp 2's (or 3's and fix the upper issue).
