Addition of heel control has negatively altered the Superior
10 April 2023Jess

I've run ultramarathons on every iteration of the Superior, the 4.0 being the best trail shoe I have ever worn. Unfortunately, the heel counter on the 5.0 makes them unwearable for me due to the counter rubbing incessantly on my Achilles and thereby changing my strike. While this probably does make the shoe more mainstream/friendly to heel strikers, it definitely changes the foot strike for mid/forefoot runners. Issues with control on descents can be remedied with lacing and doesn't actually require a stiff heel. The transition away from the soft heel, which was a pretty unique feature of the Superior, is a disappointment.

The Lone Peaks have more support and firm structure and, when I ran in them I felt that sense of reinforcement around my foot. The Superiors, on the other hand, felt much less structured and more like a glove than a shoe. If you are wanting to try the barefoot approach, but don't want to sacrifice the skin off your feet, then this might be the shoe for you. Overall I have enjoyed running in this shoe. I do experience a bit of sliding and movement within the shoe which I first attributed to the roomy toe box, but actually, I think that it may be because of the choice of fabric for the upper. One review that I read said that the fabric on the upper is too stretchy and I am inclined to agree. I questioned also whether the fabric would hold up on the trail, but after having the shoes for a month running on rocky, sandy, and sometimes wet ground, it seems the fabric is holding up well. When I first noticed a bit of sliding in the shoe, I wondered whether the width was too wide, but decided it was the freedom of movement in a wider toe box and the give of the fabric that was allowing a bit too much movement at times... like when you jump from one rock to another and are planting your foot at an angle. One of the first things that I noticed to be different about the Superiors was that they have a stiffer heel support than the Lone Peaks. After my first run in the Superiors I had a bit of a sore spot on one heel, but after taking the stone guard out I haven't had any more issues with that. I agree that the shoelaces are not the nicest to work with, but after getting used to the attached tongue they don't bother me so much. I think the complaints about the tongue may stem from the inconvenience of dealing with something that is so different from the way you have always been used to it being. Tying one's shoes is such an ingrained skill that the least bit of change makes things awkward. In any case, after just a week or so I now didn't mind it anymore.Probably my biggest concern with these shoes, as much as I like them, is with the size of the lugs on the ball of the foot. When jumping from rock to rock, especially after a rain, I have definitely experienced some slipping. I am not very concerned because I run at a slower pace on an easy to moderate trail, but for anything more aggressive, I would have to reconsider my choice. And this was a difference that I noticed between the Superiors and the Lone Peaks. The Lone Peaks have visibly thicker lugs for better traction. For now the Superior 5 suits me fine and I'm enjoying them; however, after reading the review of someone loving the Superior 3s so much that she owned 10 pairs, I really would love a chance to try those 3's.

Great idea, bad execution/ quality
23 June 2023

The superior 5 was my first Altra purchase. I had to return for a half size larger (normally a 10.5 and had to get an 11.) btw, the same size issue is happening with the superior 6. I bought them because my back pain is reduced when wearing zero drop shoes. I'm a professional dog walker and on my feet in a variety of environments all day (driving/ walking/ jogging on both pavement and trails.) I have consistently worn these shoes for a month and the cushion support is virtually gone, and wearing down unevenly. The shoes were pretty great for the first couple weeks (except a bit slippy on wet surfaces, which is a concern.) After just a short duration, these shoes feel uneven beneath my feet. There are raised areas on the inside sole of the shoe which is now causing hip pain on my right hip. The quality is just not what I hoped for. So disappointing because I love the concept that Altra has going. I see what some other reviewers mean about the bulky heal, although that's not a major issue for me. The superior 6 does not have the same heal issue, and the bottom tread is different. Waiting for the bigger size to come before trying those.I'm probably going to regret this, but I've decided to purchase another pair and put a sturdier pair of insoles in the shoe. Hoping that will help them hold up longer, and reduce the uneven feeling on my feet?? In the meantime I'm going to try some other zero or low drop shoe brands that might have better quality. Sorry Altra, I wanted to love you!

Great shoe, would be nice to have wide option
6 December 2022

I have been using Altras for trail running the past 10 years. I have very wide feet, and Altra overall has been the best shoe I can find for my feet, I would definitely recommend for anyone else with wide feet. I began running in Superior Trail, then switched over to Lone Peak. I appreciate the zero drop in both shoes. I really enjoyed the thinner, less cushion of the Superior Trail shoes compared to Lone Peak, but after using a wide pair of Lone Peak, have not got back to the Superior Trail. I would recommend having a wide foot option for Superior Trail to support people like me with very wide feet, to be able to continue using a more minimalist shoe but with a wider toebase.

Love the look, but not the feel
20 October 2021

First, the positive: these are super cute compared to other versions of the Superior. Great color options, and I really like the overall look. Also, I believe these are true to size. Other reviews are saying these run small, but I wear an 8.5 in every running and hiking shoe I own, and the 8.5 fits me perfectly, as far as length is concerned. ( i think there may be confusion among customers because the sizing throughout the last few models has been really inconsistent. The 4s ran super long). Now for the negative: I've been hiking in the Superior since version 2.0, and I'm sad to say that these don't have that sock- like, snug, flexible feel that the 2s, 4s, and 4.5s had. They feel a bit clunky and clumsy, not what I expect from the Superior. Also, i am unable to ... MoreFirst, the positive: these are super cute compared to other versions of the Superior. So, I can't get that snug feel through the mid foot and my foot is kind of slipping around. I think the discomfort has to do with the way the side reinforcements ( that attach to the laces) do not extend at enough toward the center of the top of the foot. There is a lot of pressure on top of my foot from the laces, and I would prefer each side of the lace to be closer together - more shoe across the top of my foot, less lace. These are a great looking shoe, and I really wish they had that "signature" superior feel. I'll be anxiously awaiting the next version!

My first pair of Altras, I love them!
5 May 2023

These are my first pair of Altras ever, and I love them! I am training for races and triathlons that max out at the same distance as a full marathon, and wanted something speedy. As of now, I have put approximately 30 miles on these shoes, and I haven't had the chance to run longer than 5 miles in them yet. They are extremely light weight and minimalistic, while giving me enough support while running down rugged terrain. I live in the Lake Tahoe area, and the traction is fantastic, even when a trail is wet or seemingly slippery, especially as the snow continues to melts. I'm a big fan of the tongue being apart of one side of the shoe, giving me the chance to tighten them as snug as a sock. I am eager to see how they hold up on longer runs!

Perfect shoe
19 March 2023

Fantastic shoe. Got the orange which is a pretty cantaloupe color. I know I have at least a dozen pair of Altra shoes. With this style, I Love the fit, cushioning and how they make my foot look smaller. Nothing rubs or pinches I could sleep in these. I like how the tongue is sewn in place in this style on one side which keeps tongue from occasionally sliding. I'm not the average runner. I'm 73 with bad knees. My only running is to the bathroom. These are the most comfortable shoe for anyone. I would recommend these shoes for every day comfort and stability. I'm picky with shoes and just ordered two more colors. Keep up the great work Altra! To me they're the best shoe on the market and worth every penny!

17 November 2023

I have been contemplating on whether or not to buy this show. Decided to by the dark blue and grayish looking colors. I love the Altras with the thick sole but these were not what I usually wear. I really like them. At first, I thought they were too tight across the foot, then I realized that I had to loosen that laces and that problem was fixed. I love them. I am on my feet a lot, so they are great for work. Had not tried for working out yet but I believe that will do fine.

Superior 5 Womens Trail Running Shoes Dusty Olive
5 April 2023

These are my first zero-drop running shoes. I like them very much, they are as comfortable as my previous highly cushioned shoes. I suffered IT syndrome and am attempting to avoid further injury by allowing my feet a more natural position inside a shoe. These are cushioned enough to be comfortable, unlike barefoot shoes that have no cushioning. I run off-road and they're comfortable on stony tracks, I don't use the stone guard insoles that come with them. They are especially grippy on wet and dry grass, but can be slippy on wet cobble stones! I tie the laces loosely to allow my foot plenty of room, and love the extra space in the front for my toes.
