I recently bought a homepod mini to see how it compares to this Echo. I gotta be honest that the smaller homepod mini sounds much better than the bigger Echo....but I'm still liking the Echo device better because of Alexa. I have programed Alexa to greet me every morning with a positive message, the weather report and the news. Alexa also greets me when I get home after work and sings me a little song. Alexa dims my lights in the evening and later says good night and plays 30 mins of soothing music while I drift off to sleep. I love all of the things I can program Alexa do for me. Unfortunately I cannot program Siri on the homepod to do all of these things. All you need to do is take it out of the box, plug it into an outlet, and follow the instructions in the Alexa app which is required. Once you’ve connected it to your Wi-Fi you have access to the Alexa personal assistant, a mamas dream. With Alexa you can do everything from control compatible smart home devices, make a list, set reminders to asking it questions about the weather. This 4th gen is larger and rounder than the previous generations we have but having a different look than the others is nice for aesthetics around the house. We also received the Amazon smart plug. It’s rectangular, 3 prong and measures 1.5 x 3 x 2 inches, so you need to make sure you have enough space to plug this THEN your cord to your electronic. Super easy to install, also within the Alexa App. It’s definitely convenient to be able to talk to turn our lights off with hands full of kids. Overall, Alexa is helpful and easy to use. From one busy mama to another, snag it up.

I had to look up some times what the color ring means. I knocked off a couple stars because of the hidden software feature that was in product. Great sound quality. I have a pair of these which I set up to perfor Great sound quality. I have a pair of these I set up to to perform as left and right stereo speakers joined with an Amazon subwoofer. I have a third at my bedside, which also sounds great solo. I bought this third one on sale for $60 and placed at my bedside which also sounds great solo, and better set up as a group with my Show 8. The non OEM wall mounts were sold separately, just fyi. The cons are the typical Amazon issues of Alexa not understanding your voice or not executing the command.
This item has great sound for it's use in the Kitchen. Presence detection is also amazing for triggering weather reports and notifications in the morning. It has to be noted that the presence detection has a cooldown so expect a detect every 20-30mins. It's not motion detection. This was bought because of the inbuilt hub Zigbee possibly bluetooth hub. If after deeper sounds or future proofing with possible utilization of this hub, get this, otherwise I would recommend the dot version of this.
Really great sound compared to the other Echo Dots. Our use of this specific Echo Dot was to play low level relaxation/meditation music in our Massage chair room. It works wonderfully for that purpose prose but we’ve also tied it into our whole house “Everywhere” group so that it can play whatever we are listen while cleaning or having guests. Really decent treble and a substantial amount of base for a little speaker. Definitely worth the extra money to get the sound that you get from this. Paired with another speaker like itself and an Echo sub it might just be your go to speakers for your entertainment area.

If you don't have an Amazon Music account (paid up), the music choices are woefully limited. The games? Try one out for ten minutes and they want to charge a subscription to your Amazon account. Want to hear one of the celebrity voices? Pay six bucks. Things that seem to be free are not. Quality? My older dots are better than the newer ones. The sound is muffled on one, etc. And yes, they are all placed in wifi areas away from interfering objects, etc. Also, there is not voice recognition. These usually work well as alarms, can sometimes answer a random question (but often it's a wrong answer, and yes we're all American-born and bred English speakers) Above all, lately? The dots will play maybe two songs or answer a couple of questions before asking if we want items put in our carts. So, as far as those of us on the block here are concerned, these have been reduced to sellers of all kinds. Oh, and alarm clocks. They usually get the times right. Oh, they suck your information. They actually do listen, and I can't tell you who told me, but they don't just "learn" from us as they say, they suck information. We're going to try packing these up and getting Google Nests.

And the RADIO! If you know the call letters for any radio station in the world you can call it up and listen in the privacy of your own room, OR if we're together at dinner, we call call for music on a radio station or Pandora app to play. For a couple of us that really love to listen to music, we have two Amazon devices in our rooms so we get a STEREO effect. And on the first floor we created a "GROUP" so we have the option of playing music on just one device OR we can play for the "first floor group" to have surrounding sound on the entire floor. We got rid of so many extra devices as this has replaced a few. Like radios and alarm clocks. We put one of these on each floor, and one of the tiny Amazon FLEX (smaller than a pack of cigarettes and not as good a sound) in the basement.
