Overview Amazon Echo Dot is a hands-free, voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music, control compatible smart home devices, provide information, read the news, set alarms, and more. Play music simultaneously across multiple Echo devices and speakers connected via cable with multi-room music. Call or message anyone hands-free who also has an Echo device or the Alexa App. Also, quickly connect to other Echo devices in your home using just your voice. Controls lights, switches and smart plugs with compatible connected devices from Philips Hue, LIFX, TP-Link, D-Link and others. Hears you from across the room with seven microphones for far-field hands-free voice control, even in noisy environments or while playing music. Includes a built-in speaker so it can work on its own as a smart alarm clock in the bedroom, an assistant in the kitchen, or anywhere you might want a voice-controlled device.

I'm new to these sort of devices and bought this to see what Alexa was all about. it takes some learning to get the full benefit of this device, but there is also scope to teach Alexa new tricks. I find that one the more interesting aspects and could be good for the whole family to invent apps that will help the family. Quality of sound with this early version of Alexa is not great, but paired with blue tooth speakers I'm sure would be fine. We will add more items to our house to be able to get the most out of Alexa.

Got a couple of Google Homes and thought I'd try Alexa due to Hype and dropped price. I was so disappointed since the sound quality is very bad compared to my Google Home Mini (which is its direct competition). It also has very bad documentation on how to add other people so I still cant' figure out how to add profiles for my wife and kids and when they try to play Spotify, it uses my profile and therefore Spotify on my phone stops when I'm in the office. Not recommended. Get Google Home and you'll be happier.

Bought this little guy at launch and have been surprised at how responsive he is. Not as clever as the Google Home but, in my opinion, better at automating your home.In an ideal world you would have an Echo Dot to control your home and a Google Home to ask questions to etc.Especially love the fact you can blue tooth and use an AUX cable for music with the Dot.Can connect to your Spotify account too.

Great sound in a small package
11 January 2019

I have an Echo Plus gen1 and the sound is awesome. I was concerned about the sound quality of the Echo Dot gen2 based on some other reviews. Fortunately, I have to say that it's pretty clear and loud considering how small it is. Very happy with my purchase.

Limited features compared to the US
6 February 2018

I love my new Dot, I truely to. However, a glaring fault is that I can't do half of the things I had hoped to do. A wonderful feature in the US version is the connection to another Amazing product, Audible. In the US, Alexa can be used to read the audio books in your Audible library. I love listening to audio books to relax, so it was one of the first things I tried to ask my Australian Alexa to do. But she can't. It's not even an option on the Alexa Companion app. A basic feature, created by Amazon themselves, and yet we do not have it. If you are on the fence about this, I recommend double checking if the features you want to use are actually supported in Australia yet. If not, perhaps wait until they are.

More than I expected.
24 March 2018

I started buying Echo’s (yes multiple) when Myer first introduced them. I purchased an Echo 2nd Gen and 2 Echo Dots. With these all I really hoped to achieve is multi room audio.I achieved this and much more. The Echo dots and the Echo all have aux out. So essentially I connected a sound bar and a beats pill+ to both echo dots. Really awesome walking around the house with the same music coming from all speakers in different rooms and spaces. Super cool!!!!There are new skills released every week, Alexa can call you if you misplace your phone and so much more.I recommend this to absolutely anyone looking at a smart home speaker.

ROLLIE's review of Echo Dot (2nd Gen) Black
8 April 2019

Pros: Great at doing the things you ask it with whats enabled. If you connect an external speaker it sounds good.New tasks being added constantly by amazon so it great.Does some amazing stuff for a little device.Cons: The Sound is not that great for music but for the price you cannot complain.A bit concerned about privacy so I turn off the mic most times but have to manually unmute it and mute it back, It would be great to unmute it from your smart device or PC.

So helpful in everyday life!
22 March 2019

I brought this a few weeks ago and am absolutely in love! Like me, if you have a busy schedule you can link your up coming events with the echo dot and the best part about is it’s small can hardly noticeable. One thing I love is music and Alexa connect music through my Spotify account by simply asking her too. I love it and can never turn back!!

Useful little device
29 December 2018

I had a couple of these already and decided to grab a couple more from Myer recently; one for myself and one for a friend. As a person with a disability it allows me to control several things around the house with my voice which is extremely convenient. There are lots of compatible devices and appliances available now. It's cheaper and simpler than most dedicated systems and I'm always working out ways to control other things. I've even built my own Alexa compatible device.

Works well, but poor sound quality compared to the Google Mini
1 March 2018

There are several advantages of the Dot over the Google mini, most notably its ability to attach to other speakers via 3.5mm or Bluetooth. The dot also offers better button controls. However, the internal speaker in the Dot is terrible.... Very tinny, a far cry from the surprisingly rich sound of the google mini.
