Amazon Echo Dot (2nd Generation, White)

$29.84

(9,539 reviews)

About this product Product Information The 2nd generation Amazon Echo Dot smart assistant is the scaled-down version of their larger Echo system. This second generation model launched in 2016 to build upon the success of the original Echo Dot and came with a couple of new features as well as a white color option. When used as a smart speaker, the Echo Dot can link to a smart device using Bluetooth. If you want a bigger sound than this miniature device can offer, you can also link it to external speakers using the same Bluetooth connection or a 3.5 millimeter audio jack. The Echo Dot is a lot more than just a wireless speaker, though. It is also a hub for Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant. When the Echo Dot’s microphone array picks up Alexa’s wake word, she comes online to give you the news or weather updates, turn on a music streaming service, or even tell you a joke. The Echo Dot can also be linked to apps and used as a hub for a wide range of other smart home devices. If the Echo Dot is connected to the right devices, Alexa can adjust your thermostat, turn your lights on and off, and control your home security system.

I got this during one of Amazon.com black Friday specials. I was the first to order one in my family. Normally my kids get technology before I do. I love that it blends in, not so mechanical looking. I use mine as a timer when baking and cooking I can't tell you how many times I had forgotten something was on the stove. When I hear the timer go off, i am surprised because I forgot I was cooking something.. I lose track of time when I'm on the computer. Saved me from something boiling dry.. Also as a reminder to go to appointments, call someone , reminding me to watch a favorite TV show and so forth.

I love these little Amazon Echo Dots! We have them in each of the kids rooms. We have an Echo in the kitchen, an Echo Show in the livingroom and an Echo Spot on my nightstand. I love how all of the devices can work together. I can easily “drop in” to speak to the kids, or for them to tell me a joke while we’re all getting ready in the mornings. When dinner is ready, I can easily ask Alexa to make an announcement “Dinner is ready” and my voice is heard through all the devices. Another plus is that one son can call his Alexa, and the other son can call his Echo that way there’s no confusion when telling her commands. It’s small and can be tucked in a corner. It can tell jokes, play music and can fart on command. What else can be greater! Haha

I bought these for our family! I put one in the kids room living room and our kitchen has the Amazon Alexa with the screen! These are super handy! If I’m busy cooking or my hands are full n I need the kids to come help I can use the intercom function all hands free to let my kids know in whatever room they are in I need them to come to the kitchen and help me! These dots would be really good for elderly ppl! If they fall or are hurt all they have to do is say Alexa please call 911! These are super handy, price point is very affordable, and they are fun for the kids! The kids will talk to Alexa and have her tell jokes, or stories! It’s super cool

I purchased this to replace a powered hallway smoke alarm, hoping to transform a simple warning device to something that also serves as an Alexa-powered smart speaker and nightlight. And it does that, but in a more basic sense that one imagines. I was imagining one of these on each hall, playing synchronously for full home audio as I know other Alexa devices do, but because this is a third party speaker from a home safety company, that functionality just isn't there; this device will answer your Alexa queries and play music, but only independently. Also, at higher volumes the speakers don't sound great - but don't get me wrong, if this were in a room, at normal volume, it's fine. The app, and connecting to wi-fi, aren't the smoothest experiences but it works.

I recently found my Amazon Echo Dot and decided to give it another chance. It's helpful, sometimes, but sometimes it will ignore you, or just go off talking about something you never asked it, much like the people in my life, haha. I mostly use it to check the weather, set alarms, or make shopping lists. I do recommend that you remember what you needed and take what she ads to the list with a grain of salt, definitely not for giving to the husband and telling him to buy what's on it, it has a habit of misinterpreting words even when you have spoken clearly. It's like an adult game of telephone. It does come in handy, but I know it listens all the time because if I mention anything within earshot of it, within minutes, hours, or a few days I will get targeted ads for ... MoreI recently found my Amazon Echo Dot and decided to give it another chance. With Amazon Prime Day coming up, if you were looking to purchase one, I'd recommend it.

My daughter bought me one of these, as I 'had to keep up' with science and technology and I am very happy she did. I use it mainly while in the kitchen so I can have my own personal play list plying while I work or if I fancy a change, I just say 'Alexa, play....... and there it is playing. I also find it very handy to use as a timer, instead of getting the timer out and setting it for say 15 minutes, I say Alexa, set reminder for 15 minutes and she does. It's also great for lots of other things too, I can even 'drop in' on my daughter and see what she's up to or if I feel a bit low I can ask for Alexa to tell me a joke. It's neverending what you can do with it, another of my favourite things it can do is tell a short story, if for example I'm peeling veg I can ask ... MoreMy daughter bought me one of these, as I 'had to keep up' with science and technology and I am very happy she did. It can also be very cheeky, I asked Alexa 'What do you think of my hair style?' and got the reply 'Oh, I didn't think that was still in fashion' I love trying different things out and see what replies I get.

If all you want is basic information - - the weather, news, etc - - and some special features - - cooking timer ("Alexa: set a 3-minute timer"), alarm alerts ("Alexa: wake me in an hour"), etc - - and some entertainment ("Alexa: play Beethoven's Fifth" or "...play anything by the Beatles" or "...Tell me a joke about chickens"), including movies (especially if you have Amazon Prime), then, Echo Dot will be perfect for you. But, if you need specific information - - ("Alexa: What is a profiterole" or "...How did the 49ers do, yesterday" or "...What's the latest about that Senator who did something bad?") - - then, be prepared for disappointment, because it won't understand you, and it doesn't seem to learn over time. I'd say about 30% of our questions are "unanswerable" or misunderstood by the thing, and about 50% of the answered ones are not as complete as we'd like, and there doesn't seem to be a way to ask it to expand on a given answer. Sure, it's "convenient" to ask a question, verbally, rather than have to type it into a computer or smartphone's browser's search engine, but, you'll get far more and far more relevant answers with the latter. With multiple Dots in the house, it's relatively easy to ask the thing to communicate with someone else in the house, especially if you know where they are (e.g., "Alexa: Tell Johnny in the kid's bedroom that dinner's ready"), but, that's what yelling is for! ;) As for cooking timers and alarms, use your microwave oven's timer function and/or smartphone for those, too! So, save yourself money, energy, and exasperation, and skip the thing.

I tell Alexia to play ocean sounds when I go to bed at night and sleep soundly until morning. I wouldn't want to be without it. I plan to get another one for my husband's Nursing Home room to help him sleep. I especially like Thunder Storms at night. It reminds me that I always slept well when there was a thunderstorm. The sounds are perfect to imagine that I really am curled up with my husband safe inside while the storm goes on outside. I ask the Alexa Dot for these sounds anytime I want to drift off. If you don't like Thunderstorms there are other sounds. One is called Ocean Sounds that is so soothing I can fall asleep to it too.

Absolutely the biggest piece of crap on the market. Used to think of it more of a mutual relationship. I allow Echo to listen to every damn conversation in my house, ship products on a repeat / scheduled basis, bought one of these devices for every room in the house that are hardly better than a clock / weatherman in every room.....and on my side, I would ask for them to play music from a specific band. I would get that music for hours. Now, I need to pay $5.99 per month to have that same service you were so capable of before. No thanks. Probably, go to a service that allows the same request but drops a 15 second commercial in every 3 song. Oh, and if that happens, bye Echos, bye repeat orders.
