Another evolution to the Amazon Echo Show line up!

We wanted a sleeker, less obtrusive version for our dining room. We had previously been using a first generation 'puck' in there for years now, and wanted a little more information displayed on the screen, while being able to blend it into the background. Choosing a dark wood finish on the screen definitely helped with that in our 'Steampunk' inspired room. The triangular shape helps with the improved sound, a slightly larger speaker inside offers nicer, cleaner sound, with a little more bass at higher volumes that previously possible. The operation of the whole product is faster. Quicker to load from first power up, it feels more responsive to touch, sometimes a little too responsive when trying to scroll through the menus when setting it up at first. We turned the camera off, and via a the menus, turn off most of the unwanted options and main ads that we didn't want. There are still a few suggestions that are pushed to you when it is 'awake' but if you don't walk past it and activate it, you can see your background and the time nice and clearly from across the room.We don't have any intention of watching video or content like that from the screen in our dining room, but we do play music, we check our notifications, our weather alerts etc, and this is absolutely perfect for that.Very simple to set up, especially if you are already an Alexa user, but even for a first timer, you are walked through the set up process and you can skip steps if you are unsure or unfamiliar, like the Amazon Sidewalk program that is a shared network that can help you set up the device quicker, help you find lost items and more. It's free but you can choose if you want to opt into the program or not. We chose not to. You can also set up this Echo 5 to be kid friendly as well, which means it will only show kid appropriate content on the screen and disable some functions.Overall a nice addition or upgrade to the Amazon Echo Show ecosystem, whether you are a big fan and deep into smart operation of products/lights/switches etc, or if this is your first Amazon Echo product with a screen. You won't be disappointed.

This looks attractive but when playing videos, this version of Echo shrinks the video with black bars on every edge, so one can see the full video, but makes the viewing area smaller. Thankfully, it doesn't do this with pictures. On the plus side, the screen is clearer, and it's much faster than previous generations. Also the applications (Skills) seem to be updated. For example, opening Prime Video looks more similar to the TV app than on the 1st gen.Audio has more bass, so it overall sounds better.I was planning on making both Echos a 'Stereo Pair' but one cannot pair a 1st gen with a 3rd gen. Perhaps because they don't quite sound the same, but disappointing regardless.Talking about sound, the previous generation has a 3.5mm audio output but this one does not. It does however support pairing Bluetooth speakers. To power the Echo, it comes with its own power brick which connects using a barrel connector recessed into the back of the Echo, so unfortunately it does not use standard USB-C ports to power it. To make it worse, our Back Echo 5 came with a white power cable, which looks quite odd.Overall, the screen makes for a much better Alexa experience and can also be used to display compatible cameras and make alexa-to-alexa video calls, it's touchscreen and many skills are just more convenient.

Though Amazon pushes their sidewalk program to generously share your internet with strangers during setup, it is optional. Standard privacy features include a mute button as well as a physical camera shutter.Although I do not have a 2nd generation device to compare with, Amazon claims the sound has been improved partially thanks to a slightly larger internal speaker. I found the sound to be clear and pronounced, with fairly decent sound when listening nearby. The petite device is also quite capable of higher volume than expected, making it easy to hear from across the room. Though you lose the depth of the sound when not in close proximity, this should not be a surprise considering the diminutive size. Fortunately, it’s small foot print affords versatility in placement and the design blends in to an extent. I found sound quality is best when the back of the speaker is close to a wall, allowing the audio to reflect off the surface. The 5.5” touch display is sharp and clear, though sometimes the interface can be a little laggy. the display is a also a fingerprint magnet, so probably best to interact with this device primarily through voice. The display is quite useful, from showing visual results when asking Alexa a question to displaying on-screen lyrics when playing music, it offers a nice visual interface to accompany the voice assistant. My family has been enjoying the “Price is Right” mini game, which would not be possible on an Echo without a display. The device can also be used to keep in touch with family members if you choose, allowing you to video call each other from compatible devices. For the size and price, the Echo Show 5 is a nice entry level device so long as you know it’s purpose. It will not fill your home with rich audio nor will it be the best device to watch videos on due to the size, but it offers a small, discrete smart home device that is capable of a large variety of tasks. I think it is a great device for kids, gift to a family member, or add to your home where you do not need a larger, more capable speaker or display.

Great addition to any Alexa Echo house
13 August 2023

If you're in the Amazon Echo/Alexa ecosystem, then this is an excellent addition to that. It is small which could be good or bad depending on what you need or want, but it has BIG sound and lots of great features. Starting with the size, the screen is about the size of a large cell phone - think iPhone 14 Pro Max size so I wouldn't recommend this if your main purpose or desire is a digital photo frame - that's not the main reason for this device. However, what is really super cool is that you can have this as your Echo/Alexa device that also dubs as a cool little photo frame clock. You can have it just be a photo frame and have it show photos from your Amazon Prime Photo Storage (you can pick any or all albums) OR you can set it up to be a Digital Clock Photo Frame with the same album options. AND you have many different styles of clocks to choose from so you can pick one that you like the best. There are also other options for the default screen such as showing weather, stock, latest news, Alexa tips, and much more and you can select what you want and have it scroll through those things. I myself prefer using as a Clock displaying my photos.Of course, like I said the main purpose of this is to use as an Alexa Echo device and it is really great for that. It can hear you easily from across the room. It has an amazingly loud and clear speaker (I have mine set to 50% and that is plenty loud enough). It not only answers you by voice but will display related content as well. It can stream any cameras you have connected to Alexa. It can be used for video chats via the built in camera and you can also set that camera up so that you can use it as a security camera to view what's happening in your house when you're away. There are buttons on top for changing the volume and turning off the mic, as well as a slide to block the camera for privacy/security if you want. Other settings are easily accessed by swiping down from the top.I have a ton of Alexa Echo devices in my house starting from the 1st generation to now and this is a definite asset to those. It looks great, doesn't take up a lot of space, sounds amazing, and has the benefit of the display!

Great choice for a smaller smart display
21 August 2023

I am deeply entrenched in the Amazon Alexa universe, so when I saw this updated version of the Echo Show 5 (Gen 3) I had to have it! This thing is everything I would expect. Its small size is great for all the basics - seeing the time, the weather or automatically rotating photos from my Amazon photo library. It can also control most of the smart devices within my home. It can show me who’s at the front door from my smart camera doorbell when I ask, I can tell it to start my iRobot vacuum, turn on/off my smart lights, change the temperature on my smart thermostat, etc. I am constantly asking Alexa questions such as: how old is Aaron Rodgers, how many episodes are there in season 3 of the Kardashians, who won today’s Dodger game, what is the weather in Los Angeles ... MoreI am deeply entrenched in the Amazon Alexa universe, so when I saw this updated version of the Echo Show 5 (Gen 3) I had to have it! I always use this for reminders and alarms - this is perfect for that: Alexa set a reminder for Wednesday at 3pm: water the lawn. Then Wednesday at 3pm it will tell me the reminder. There is so much more this can do!They claim there is improved bass with this model. Personally, I think at low volume the bass is overpowering - too much for me. At a higher volume, the base sounds much better & the sound is much more clear. This wouldn’t be my first choice for listening to music, but it is mega convenient to ask Alexa to play 70’s pop (my favorite) and she just does it. When cooking, or in the background… it sounds fine and is so convenient. This Echo Show 5 has a 2mp camera - you can make video calls to others with an Echo Show. With a 5.5” screen, this wouldn’t be my first choice for watching videos or streaming - it’s too small for that in my opinion. But from the Alexa app (which you need to set up with this device) you do have the ability to drop in on the room where your Echo Show is and if your camera is open, you can see and/or hear what’s happening within the camera’s field of view. You can have a video conversation with someone that way as well. Is this a privacy issue? I would say it is not because you decide to keep the camera open or closed with a manual slide. For verbal requests for linked smart devices and asking various questions about almost anything and limited music playing, this is a great assistant! There is just so much that this can do and for me, it makes life a little bit easier. I would absolutely recommend the Amazon Echo 5 (3rd Gen) to anyone looking to make their life a little bit easier!

It's like a Echo Dot with screen but better
17 August 2023

This is my first Amazon Echo Show and I’m glad to finally make the move. I have a few Echo Dot’s of different generations so adding this to that group makes everything flow nicely. I am keeping this in the kitchen for now but considering getting a larger screen for the kitchen and brining this to my home office. It was very easy to set up and it was recognized by the app and I could start using it within minutes. It’s great to be able to communicate with Echo Dot’s in the house on each floor. The one negative thing I notice so far is the notification announcement each time the Ipad connects and disconnects. I imagine there’s a way to turn this off and just haven’t figured it out yet.Another great feature about this is the camera feature that I can also use as a security camera and talk to whoever is in the room or just see what’s happening around and check up on the dog if he’s left alone for a short time. What I like most about this camera option is that it sends a message to Echo Show saying that a household member is using your camera and you can choose to stop it if you need privacy. You can also turn off the camera and you’ll see that message that it’s off until you slide the switch back on. Overall, it works great for our family.

Nice Upgrade from Previous Gen

I recently had the pleasure of trying out the Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd generation), and I must say it's an impressive smart display that offers a range of features in a compact size.First and foremost, the display quality of the Echo Show 5 is excellent. The built-in speakers produce clear and well-balanced sound, whether I was listening to music, watching videos, or engaging in voice conversations. It's perfect for enjoying my favorite music streaming services or even using it as a smart alarm clock in the bedroom. One of the standout features of the Echo Show 5 is its integration with Alexa, Amazon's virtual assistant. The voice control capabilities are excellent, allowing me to perform a variety of tasks with simple voice commands. I could ask Alexa to play music, provide weather updates, set reminders, control compatible smart home devices, and much more. The voice recognition was accurate, and the response time was quick and seamless. The design of the Echo Show 5 is sleek and modern, making it a stylish addition to any room. Its compact size makes it easy to place on a bedside table, kitchen counter, or desk without taking up much space. The adjustable stand allows for flexibility in positioning the display at a comfortable viewing angle.I found the privacy features of the Echo Show 5 to be commendable. The device comes with a physical camera shutter and a microphone mute button, providing reassurance and control over privacy concerns. When not in use, I could easily cover the camera and mute the microphone with a simple touch. The Echo Show 5's compatibility with a wide range of smart home devices is another major advantage. Ok screen but still ends up used as a speaker

Did you ever wish your Echo speaker had a screen? Well, this is effectively that. A combination of the echo + screen. Now, to be fair, it has a bit more capability than that. But with the screen size, it's unlikely that you'd really be using it to visualize much beyond album graphics and weather. Let me explain.First, this is the Amazon Echo Show 5. It's the 3rd generation of the device and actually has a bigger screen than the name implies, 5.5 inches instead of 5. On paper, that seems decent. A bit smaller than a lot of flagship cell phones but right around the size for many others. On paper, that seems decent. A bit smaller than a lot of flagship cell phones but right around the size for many others. It's natively an Echo device, playing music, giving you direct access to the Alexa assistant and controls over your home devices. Plus the additional functionality of being able to play Prime and Netflix videos in addition to giving you graphic/video results to queries. Given that we already do a lot of this stuff on our phones, it would be nice having a standalone device in the home that can do this too right? From an echo speaker point of view, the show is great. It sounds great - as good as my full size Echo speaker. Seems just as responsive and able to hear me from across the room. It potentially has a leg up on the drop in feature in Echo devices - it can do video calls with a 2MP camera. However, all of this functionality turned out to not really get used because I still needed to place this in roughly the same place that used to host an Echo speaker. And because of that, the screen is often not accessible (it replaced the kitchen speaker). Because it's in the kitchen, it's not a great place to do video calls (who wants to crowd around the microwave) and effectively only adults would be visible. It needs to sit flat so can't really be placed somewhere so one could watch a video while cooking or doing meal prep (kitchen assistant seemed one of the strongest use cases to me).The most consistent thing I used the screen to do was to glance at album art, view song lyrics in real-time, and the most exciting - see a visualization of weather which likely due to years of watching the weather report on the news, is still the most satisfying and immediately impactful way for me to get a good sense of what the day will be like. Yes, it plays videos. And while the screen density isn't as great as most similarly sized smartphones, it's still decent. But the video playback quickly became a gimmick that only surfaces when new people see it for the first time. Dropping in doesn't seem to have the weird too loud volume issue that affects my normal echo speakers, but I'm not sure that's a good enough feature right now to be worth replacing all my echo speakers with echo shows. And given that most of the time, the screen would be unused, it jus doesn't seem worthwhile anyway. The screen can also play video from other Amazon devices like a doorbell. I don't have one of those and I think perhaps that would be the thing that would make the show worthwhile for me - having one by the bed and in some rooms where I could conveniently interact with a doorbell without needing to find my phone if it wasn't on me or I didn't want to break away from something else I was doing would be clutch. The amount of times visitors have come by and we've not noticed due to things being hectic is annoying. However, absent some very specific use cases, it seems this form factor just isn't that great for a screen based device. The ideal would be either a bigger screen, which forces it to take center stage on a table rather than dropping into a convenient open spot or a tablet form factor with a battery where you can just attach it to a surface like a fridge or cabinet. Then it's more likely you can place it arbitrarily in a location where you'd utilize the screen to help facilitate or make chores more enjoyable beyond playing music in the background.

Small in size but has a lot to offer!!!

The Echo Show 5 has been quite an entertainment at my house. It's so small compared to other smart displays I have seen lately, But I'm here for it. I love the small size because it can be easily put anywhere around your home. The 5.5’’ display is very bright and vibrant but again small. The customization is a great feature and allows you to display all your favorite photos from your phone so this little guy works as a digital picture frame. On the display you are able to see important news, weather and time. If you are an Amazon Prime member it's definitely a plus and you will be able to utilize the Echo Show more since you will be able to stream movies and listen to music ad free. You can still use these features but they are limited. You cannot use any other streaming services on this device which for me is a bummer. I tried to log in to Netflix, Hulu or Peacock and it did not work. I don’t really like the Amazon video content so I was a bit disappointed. As for Music I was able to sync in your Pandora and Iheart radio account since those are the ones I usually have in all my devices. The Speaker even though it is small, it sounds phenomenal without any distortion, also great for video calls. The controls on the top are pretty simple, just the up and down volume control and the microphone and camera shut off button. There is also a camera shutter. The Amazon Alexa app is a great addition to the Echo Show, It must be downloaded to be able to sync in your smart devices like cameras, smart light bulbs, irobot and other smart devices compatible to Alexa. The Echo Show also works as a camera so if you are away from home and need to check those at home this works as a indoor camera.“Hey Alexa” is just the beginning of the outstanding help this device offers. From setting alarms, helping you set a routine schedule from playing music and most of all helping you find the answer to that question you forgot to ask the teacher, this Echo Show has so much to offer. I'm beyond happy with it. It’s my personal assistant I need, without paying a million bucks.

The Best Echo I've Owned

As a tech enthusiast and someone who appreciates the convenience of voice-activated devices, I recently added the Amazon Echo Show 5 to my smart home setup. Having spent time exploring its features and integrating it into my daily routine, I'm excited to share my first-hand experience and thoughts on this compact smart display. Its 5.5-inch touchscreen display is the perfect size (and a big upgrade from the 2.5-inch display on my Echo Spot). It's great for displaying family photos, watching Prime Videos, viewing recipes, and even making video calls. My kids love to make calls to their cousins who live out-of-state. Using Alexa, it's easy enough that my 5 year-old can do it.Voice recognition is a big upgrade on this Echo Show. The mics seem much more sensitive than my old Echo Spot and Alexa's even quicker to respond than she used to be. I have a bunch of smart light switches in my house and it's super handy to use Alexa to quickly turn them on and off, or create routines to automate turning them on at dusk or when we first wake up. In the kitchen, we set lots of timers and reminders for upcoming activities, as well as checking out the weather forecast. My kids love playing with skills like Would You Rather, Freeze Dance, and This Day in History.I love using the Echo Show 5 to stream music from Pandora. The speakers are a huge upgrade over my old Echo Spot and provide much better sound definition and punchier base. If I want a big boost in sound quality, I can turn on my living room's receiver and stream music to it from the Echo Show via Bluetooth. This is awesome as I can get excellent sound quality and still use Alexa to easily control it or switch to different stations. My kids love listening to podcasts and through our Audible account my kids can find fun podcasts and audiobooks to explore their own interests independently. The Amazon Echo Show 5 is easily the best Echo product I've owned. It has a great display, sensitive and responsive integration with Alexa, and great sound quality. I'm super happy with it!
