These Amoy sachets are good value, but they DO need some work - they are a very, very basic starter sauce to which you need to add extra spices, herbs & condiments. Here's my basic recipe for this sachet:** Stir-fry small slices of ginger & garlic for a few seconds & then throw in sliced chicken or pork for 3-4 mins. NB ginger & garlic are already in the sachet, but more is better!** Add fresh peppers of various colours & stir-fry until al dente** Add rice wine [optional] & the sachet of sauce & cook for 1 minute** Add straight-to-wok noodles & stir-fry for 2 mins. At this stage add chopped birdseye chilli or chilli flakes if you like 'heat'INGREDIENTS: Water, Sugar, Concentrated Tomato Puree (10%), Pineapple Juice (9%), Modified Starch, Red Pepper (2%), ... MoreThese Amoy sachets are good value, but they DO need some work - they are a very, very basic starter sauce to which you need to add extra spices, herbs & condiments. This really was bad. Just sharp taste of star anise (and we love star anise usually) with nothing else. No balance at all, weird one dimensional flavour. How this got past their testers is beyond us.

Really tasty and not artificial tasting
26 September 2022

I bought this to take camping, and was so impressed with the taste bought more as a store cupboard standby. I would normally make sweet and sour from scratch, but this is good for when time is short. Its well balanced and not too artificial, to my taste.

Really tasty stir\-fry sauce
16 October 2021

Received to review. After reading reviews on this, I was expecting it to be really sweet and unpleasant. Actually, it was excellent - added all the usual extras to the stir-fry - ginger, garlic, chilli etc and it gave a lovely flavour, with a mild aniseed aftertaste. Would definitely buy again.

Sugary Muck That Ruins Your Noodles - Avoid
27 December 2015

I love Thai food and keep buying products with Thai in the title to try to recreate my favourite dishes at home. I keep buying this Amoy product by error. Every time I have cooked with it I take a bite, gag, try another bite to confirm, then throw it out for the birds. The pigeons ignore it for days until the cold forces them to eat anything to survive. Poor pigeons. I usually fed them prime RSPB foods so they are not used to scraps. Anyway, this 'sauce' is a glutinous thick red syrup which tastes of nothing except sugar and the merest hint of pepper which might be the faded ghost of a mild chilli. All it does to stir-fried noodles or veggies is to turn them red and claggy. Not something you'd want to eat or even to look at. Waitrose should add a function to let shoppers put hated products on an avoid list like an inverted favourites. Any product that appears on a lot of avoid lists will know it has a serious problem to fix. I predict this product would be in the top ten avoids.

Too salty
18 September 2021

I?m reviewing this product because I got a free sample from Ocado. Obviously, I thought I?d try this with some crispy duck, but boy was it salty. Not like hoi sin I?ve had in the past. Rather an unusual taste. I?m actually really surprised, given that it?s from a brand leader such as Amoy. I wouldn?t recommend. Blue Dragon make delicious sauces - check those out.

Vile
1 March 2022

If you love star anise then you would enjoy this, as that is the predominant taste. Forget ginger or chili. This was truly one of the worst tasting things I have ever eaten. It was all I could do to choke down the last of my bowl and I will be throwing the other half of the pack out. I am not one to waste food (I even made this stir fry with cauliflower greens!)

Will stick with what I am used to
20 September 2021

I was given this product free by Ocado to review. Glad I didn't pay for it as I was not impressed. Shame because a hoisin sauce normally enables a quick and tasty meal. As a well known make I expected it to be better. Didn't seem to have much taste other than saltiness and a weird sweetness. Won't be trying again.

disgusting and almost bland.

Quite literally just takes like very cheap HP brown sauce. It was revolting and I definitely regret buying this item. In future with the stir fry meal deal, I will just stick with buying soy sauce and all the other sauces in this range and just utter rank. Which is a shame as the noodles of this brand are pretty decent in comparison.
