* Review collected as part of a sampling promotion* This is a winner from Antipodes. I love the brand and their ethos, and I received this product at the beauty heaven Natural Beauty Month event, where the Antipodes reps were fantastic in showcasing the benefits of the product. It uses natural retinol from cacay oil, which they demonstrated can outperform synthetic retinol! But is a gentler alternative. What a win! It also contains bakuchiol and other powerhouse natural ingredients. The product smells lovely, and has a very luxurious feel. I actually find this applies similarly to a face oil, so I actually recommend mixing it with your moisturiser or applying it after moisturiser, as I find it didn’t glide very well on cleansed, dry skin. As an existing regular retinol user, I haven’t seen eye opening results yet, but it complements my evening routine beautifully and I will continue to use this.

* Review collected as part of a sampling promotion* I’ve been a massive fan of Antipodes skincare for years and have tried a lot of their products during my years of being a beauty blogger. I hadn’t even gotten a press release for this yes, so I was surprised to see the pre-launch debut of the Eve Bio-Retinol Line Reducing Serum at the BH Natural Beauty Month event! Brand notes: Antipodes constantly delivers effective natural skincare that utilises Aotearoa’s (NZ) endemic botanicals. Brand notes: Antipodes constantly delivers effective natural skincare that utilises Aotearoa’s (NZ) endemic botanicals. Product notes: This new vegan friendly serum from Antipodes is a non-retinoid based formula that utilises botanical alternatives that gives similar results to retinoids for reducing the appearance of fine lines and improving skin texture. It can be used by all skin types by applying 3-4 drops on cleansed skin before moisturiser to wake up to refreshed skin. Formula and packaging notes: This lightweight concentrate is actually an emulsion, despite looking and feeling like oil, because it contains (some) water, which unlike oils, it actually provides a small amount of hydration, plus it has esters of Macadamia and Jojoba which are actually lighter feeling than their oil counterparts. It contains Cacay Oil aka Sacha Inchi Oil, known for its Vitamin A content (which according to my limited capacity in Googling scholarly articles and being hit by paywalls because I’m not longer a student) is actually indeed in the form of Retinol, but it also utilises Bakuchiol, the hero non-retinoid that has been shown to deliver the same results as using a Retinol based serum, it also has precious Prickly Pear Oil, the other (extremely precious) Moroccan oil, and our very own Australian endemic Kakadu Plum Oil, full of Vitamin C. It has a light rose fragrance, so it might not be for everybody. It comes in an amber glass dropper bottle to protect the product from light. Thoughts: I’ve used this serum every night for a week, which isn’t enough to see results, but I’m not mixing my trial team products together, and I am so far happy with it. I think it’s enough for my skin as a standalone product, even when I’m using my blemish treatments underneath. My skin isn’t purging or showing any signs of irritation. It really works nicely if I spray some of the Antipodes Ananda Toner underneath and keep the hydration locked in. The formula is so silky smooth and light that it just sinks right in. I think it would be much nicer without the rose fragrance, which is also found in many of their products, but that’s just a personal thing for me because I’m not a huge fan of florals.

What sets this serum apart is its utilization of natural ingredients that deliver results without the drawbacks of synthetic retinol. It embraces the power of natural bio-retinols that are safe for use anytime, day or night. The inclusion of prickly pear oil, enriched with amino acids and protective antioxidants, contributes to nurturing plump, fuller-looking skin. I found the serums consistency to be oil-based, with a little going a long way. While it takes a bit of time to fully absorb, the results are truly marvellous. This product is a bio-retinol and 100% of ingredients are from natural origin, and 90% of ingredients are from organic cultivation. This means that unlike synthetic retinols, this natural retinol product can be used any time of day or night and is comfortable for us from the first day of use. The other thing the Antipodes brand representative showed us at the event was that this product was tested against four leading retinol serums (from memory, the brands were Olay, La Roche-Posay, The Ordinary and Loreal). The Antipodes Eve Bio-Retinol Line Reduction Serum had the highest collagen synthesis of those that were tested, clearly demonstrating that this product is able to deliver when compared to synthetic retinols. This product contains organic Cacay Oil, which is a natural source of vitamin A that helps boosts collagen and elastin production; Bakuchiol which is another natural retinol alternative that helps to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (working on skin clarity); and Prickly Pear Oil and Kakadu Plum Oil which helps to plump and protect skin as they’re ingredients that are rich in amino acids and protective antioxidants. To use, I apply 3-4 drops on my cleansed face and neck. The serum is lightweight and massages nicely into the skin. It has a subtle rose/floral scent which is calming and enjoyable. After trialling this serum for two weeks, I’ve noticed how soft and supple my skin feels – I’ve definitely noticed a difference in the texture of my skin. My skin feels smoother and more plump. I can’t comment on a reduction of fine lines or wrinkles just yet, but I’m pleasantly surprised with how my skin is looking after only two weeks of using this serum. I’ve had no skin irritation, redness or dryness which I have experienced with other retinols. I’m excited to continue using this serum to see the longer term effects it has on my skin.
* Review collected as part of a sampling promotion* I received this at the Beauty Heaven Natural Beauty Month event and have used it nightly as directed for about a week (we had another serum to trial so I couldn’t do the full two weeks). Antipodes is an Australian company who I believe have recently returned to BH. This serum comes in a brown glass bottle with a dropper. The website says Bakuchiol can be used day or night even though the back of the bottle says use at night (retinol should apparently be used only at night). I found it didn’t absorb completely but it didn’t’ really leave my skin feeling oily or tacky. It leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and hopefully this will continue after the trial but it is too short a timeframe to tell right now. I will keep using it at night and hope for great things. It’s a bit too early to recommend it as a product that works but I will recommend it as a product to try.

There's no retinol or any form of retinoid in it, but it does contain bakuchiol, an ingredient found in the babchi plant. Bakuchiol is in no way related to retinol. Sunflower and safflower oils are high up in the ingredients list and they are better suited for dry skin as they are high in oleic acid and more occlusive. I have to use it sparingly even when it's part of my evening routine. My husband who has dry skin likes the texture better. The rose fragrance is quite strong, but pleasant. Neither of us experienced any irritation or sensitivity with this serum. We didn't see any improvement in the appearance of our skin in the two week trial period, but it was nourishing and kept any dryness at bay. By the second week though, I started developing closed comedones. For me personally, the texture is too oily but I think it will suit dry skin nicely. Back to bakuchiol. It is touted as having similar, or better anti-aging effects than retinol with none of the associated irritation or side effects. The studies to date have been in vitro studies, i.e. not on human skin. Retinol needs to be converted to retinoic acid before it has any benefits, and this process does not happen in in-vitro situations. Bakuchiol, while very promising as a new-ish anti-aging ingredient, doesn't have the same extensive research behind it as the gold standard retinol. It also does not interact with skin cells in the same way., The Antipodes spokesperson advised not to use retinol together with this serum, but I disagree with that based on the research available that shows that Bakuchiol is a great antioxidant and complements the stability of retinol. Unless you are pregnant, breastfeeding or cannot tolerate retinol, you can actually use them both together. 'Natural' companies are trying to convince customers to ditch retinol for bakuchiol, but there is no scientific reason to do so - you can use both. Other skincare companies have actually combined bakuchiol and retinol/retinal in their serum formulas.
