I'm a heavy Windows PC user, over 25 years experience... building my own PC's, setting up custom waterloops, running (now exteinct) SLI set ups, etc etc. I was very anti-apple.However I do carry an iphone and have an ipad, and after reading all the reviews, to give Apple one more chance at a desktop computing. Have to say I am loving it. It's definitely a different world, but now that I understand it things better, I love it! Let me explain.Although the macbook can definitely play some games, especially now with the M4 chip, I don't really see it as a realistic alternative to my Windows PC with the 4090 GTX. But what I love about the Macbook is how I can move things between my ipad/iphone quickly and easily. And at first glance, that doesn't seem like it's worth ... But what I love about the Macbook is how I can move things between my ipad/iphone quickly and easily. And at first glance, that doesn't seem like it's worth the price tag. A small Apple Mini can achieve that at a fraction of the cost. But this is a portable powerhouse. I now can have my photos on my iphone readily available on my laptop, my emails readily populate on my macbook in an intuitive app and popup (let's face it, it's better than Windows). I can seemlessly migrate my things from one app to another. This means I can move all my data, I can create content, on the fly, anywhere, on the go. It's powerful enough, it's interconnecting all my gear. Some drawbacks as mentioned is , it's still not a realistic gaming powerhouse, but it's getting awfully close. The unified memory system took me a while to understand why and how I'm losing memory. And I can't expand this on my own if I wanted to. In a Windows laptop most manufacturers allow this and even show you how to do it., whether it's RAM or NVME hard drive space.Without rambling too much, the bottom line is everything's very smooth, everything's connected, suddenly using my ipad as a secondary monitor on the go is awesome, having all my photos/videos readily available to easily content-create is great. The experience is different, I recommend everyone switching over to Mac to spend 30-60 minutes watching videos, after that you won't even turn back.

This was an upgrade from my Macbook Pro 13 M1 from Nov 2020. The only thing I do that makes me want this over an M3 Macbook Air is editing photos in Lightroom. The older M1 pro was having issues after 30-60 min of constant LR editing. I haven't put this one throught the paces yet, but I'm hoping it solves that problem. Also, I like LR's new AI features (like smart removal and denoise) and those should be faster on this new machine. I also LOVE that the Pro model starts at 24 GB RAM. I we pretty regularly running up against RAM issues with my 16 GB M1.I love the larger screen. I do wish it wasn't as heavy. That Macbook Air form factor is SO appealing. I almost knocked it a star for the size and weight, but I know of no better computer that even comes close, so that seems a little unfair. What I really want is a M4 Macbook Pro in a M3 Macbook Air form factor.I probably didn't need the M4 Pro. The regular M4 was probably good enough. But B&H's Black Friday sale plus the tax rebate using Payboo made the upgrade from M4 to M4 Pro worth it for me. Also, there is at least one YouTube review that compared them and while I may never notice, the M4 Pro is a big upgrade for the price difference as compared to the M4 (although the current B&H sale on the M4 would make me think twice ... cheaper than an 15 Macbook Air!)

This MacBook is amazing. My review is very clouded by the fact my last purchase was in 2017 - MacBook Air. That lasted me all this time (Nov 2024). But because I had such an old system, and couldn’t update it past iOS 12.76, I probably think this is maybe more incredible than the average person. The charge it holds is maybe the best thing about it, honestly. I can go multiple days without charging it. I love the Touch ID, I didn’t know it’d have that and it’s super convenient for not just unlocking it, but also passwords and filling things in. I got it largely to use Lightroom, and it’s great for that as advertised. I also like the mirroring option with my phone. With all this said, I wish it was more affordable. In today’s world, it’s almost required to have technology. I wish they would make these things more affordable. I needed a new laptop and mine just couldn’t do the things I needed anymore, both personal and professional use. So objectively, it just made sense to upgrade to the best available option to secure another long term use out of my laptop. Apple, please make things more accessible to the average person with average income. Overall, it’s worth the hype in my opinion for what I need - but I will be paying for it for a very, very long time.

Absolutely exceptional machine. A worthy upgrade from an M1 Pro. Major improvement in graphics, battery life, and just overall use. Use it as a work/gaming machine and it works really well for both. No hiccups no slow downs on anything I can throw at it.Playing WoW and Hearthstone. Hearthstone doesn't even get the laptop warm at max settings. No need for FSR (looks grainy on any machine I turn that setting up on).Only thing to be aware of if you're planning to do something a bit competitive gaming wise on higher settings is delayed fan activation at baseline. When I play games at higher settings the machine heats up over about 15-20 minutes. The fans kick on right around that time but the game throttles for about 3-5 minutes until the fan speed ramps up and cools the laptop down. After that the fans slow down to a barely audible hum and the machine can maintain stable/maximal frame rates for hours. This is more likely to happen on power since charging the laptop would of course heat it up as well. When off of power I can easily manage 3-5 hours of Hearthstone and about 2 hours of WoW. Baldur's Gate 3 I can get maybe an hour and 15 minutes.Casual tasks will easily have this thing lasting for a couple of days off the wall.I don't do any major production work so can't comment on that.
For my previous job as a software engineer, I had used the M1 Macbook Pro and I was impressed by the overall build quality and power efficiency. This new model I have bought for personal use is a huge step up from that. Despite having the ‘minimum’ RAM for the M4 Pro chip configuration, it is more than enough to handle my need. The 1TB SSD space also gives me peace of mind for using lots of data and assets for any software development I intend to do on this machine.Regarding screen size, if you feel doubtful about screen size, go for the 16 inch model. The 14 inch model is perfect for me because I prefer a workflow not dependent on space (i.e. small cafe table or on the plane). However, if that is not a dealbreaker, the 16 inch model is better to comfortably open ... The 14 inch model is perfect for me because I prefer a workflow not dependent on space (i.e. small cafe table or on the plane). However, if that is not a dealbreaker, the 16 inch model is better to comfortably open multiple windows of code with split screen. Personally, the 14 inch model without an external monitor is not suitable to have more than 1 window of code open at the same time. Also, if this is your first Macbook with a notch, note that the Menu bar items will be hidden and practically are inaccessible when they are extended to the notch area. Having used a Macbook without a notch before, this was somewhat frustrating.Despite this, the pros of this device are outstanding enough for me to keep this for multiple years as my daily driver. Unless you need to perform graphics intensive work that may require more RAM or SSD space, this is the best value laptop in the industry with this level of computing power for personal software development, alongside its industry leading build quality and power efficiency that allows a workflow away from the charger basically all day long.

For people running inference software locally, this is a gem. My reason for buying is having more than 24GB vram that a 4090 can provide in a laptop due to unified memory, that I can use on the go, without having it plugged into the power socket and it didn’t disappoint in that regard.
Powerful laptop with typical excellent Apple build quality. I upgraded from a MacBook Pro M1 Max with 32GB of RAM simply because I was pushing that RAM into the yellow range too often with my workflow. The GPU on this laptop is about as powerful as the M1 Max but the CPU is significantly faster. I don't notice it in my day-to-day basic activities, but it makes a noticeable difference when working with audio plugins and rendering out finished projects compared to the M1 Max (which was already quite fast). The one downside to this is that the small form factor of the 14 laptop means the fans run frequently. I have a fan monitor installed and often see 1500-2200 RPM fan speeds at lower temps (around 45-50 Celcius). You can't hear this with the naked human ear, but if ... I have a fan monitor installed and often see 1500-2200 RPM fan speeds at lower temps (around 45-50 Celcius). You can't hear this with the naked human ear, but if it's in a studio with sensitive mics like my own those mics may pick up on this and increase the noise floor. Unfortunately I am a voice actor and have my laptop in my booth with me when recording, and this can be an issue, so I am going to have to get out from under this laptop and stick with my M1 Max for now (whose fans do not come on under around 70-75 Celsius).B&H BUYER BEWARE: before buying this laptop, or any electronic from B&H, you need to go read their return policy. If you open this machine there is no return possible, unlike almost every other laptop vendor on the internet. Only purchase if you are 100% certain you will keep it. I was not, and I am now stuck with a $3k machine I will have to flip in the private market because it's not quite what I had hoped for. If you are anything less than absolutely certain you will keep the laptop purchase it from another vendor to allow for an open-box return if needed. I didn't check this before purchasing since, as I said, every other vendor I have come across on the web accepts returns on open-box laptops. Don't make my mistake. As a company B&H is excellent, but this was a surprising upset. I have shared this with many in my industry and all were caught off guard by the policy.
It's an Apple computer, & as such, no surprises if you're familiar with the brand. Biggest difficulty is determining what level of Macbook Pro to get, as it's pretty impossible to upgrade later. I went with 36 gb of ram and 512 gb ssd.The ram was necessary for photo editing, and although the ssd is small, it's large enough to hold all the programs, and storing photos on external drives is necessary if you're taking a lot of photos. An external 2 TB ssd is less than the cost of upgrading the Apple ssd from 512 G to 1 TB. Get a firewire or usb 3 ssd and you won't notice any lag in loading. The price from B&H was better than ordering direct from Apple, Amazon, Best Buy (yeah, they've got a local store, so I checked) or any other legitimate online store. Order was delivered on time and in excellent condition.Anyway, I upgraded from a 2017 Intel iMac desktop. This is significantly faster. I haven't done any movie editing yet, so can't speak to that, but it runs Luminar Neo, ACDee, Topaz Photo AI, and the Affinity photo applications well.Get a good hub that uses minimum usb 3 and you'll need a good external monitor, as 14 is too small for serious photo editing.Hope this info helps.
I love this machine! I do mainly productivity stuff, (government reports, some coding, VM,). I got M3 Max to replace my 2023 M2Pro 16GB 512 SSD 14in. I love how I now have 10 performance cores at 4+ GHz plus 36 GB RAM!!!! I can definitely tell the difference in everything from browsing the web, working in the cloud, and my Adobe apps. The M3max is probably overkill for my use case, but I hate slow computers and this is gonna last me no less than 5 years. The screen is definately upgraded and is easier to view. (the difference 100nits makes). Unless you have the extra cash to burn, Id recommend sticking with M2Pros. A lot of Youtubers have shown that the M2Pros still hold their own compared to the M3Pros unless you are into graphics and modeling. At that rate, you ... MoreI love this machine! A lot of Youtubers have shown that the M2Pros still hold their own compared to the M3Pros unless you are into graphics and modeling. At that rate, you should go to the M3Max anyway. The only downside of this computer, is I can tell Apple reengineered the speakers and balanced the lows, mids and highs much more. I preferred the M2Pro's speakers because the highs were more pronounced, but I can live with it. That what external speakers are for anyway. Dont worry about storage. Make or grab yourself an external Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB 3.2 SSD drive. Its tons cheaper and will reduce the wear and tear on your macbook pro /max investment. I have had great luck with a WD SN570 1TB in any external enclosure. Many a youtuber will tell you that they work just fine.
i've been a mac user for most of my life, and my most recent was the 2019 16 macbook pro (the last intel model). I figured this would be another incremental upgrade, but I was so wrong. this is truly computing on another level—the machine basically reacts as fast as I can think. i never thought using a computer could be this frictionless. totally worth the investment.some specific things i liked:* fan almost never runs; when it does, it's a gentle whooshing sound (compare that to my 2019 MBP 16, which sounded like a small vacuum cleaner whenever i connected an external display or ran more than a few programs). relatedly, the machine never gets hot in my experience.* i really like the feel (tactility?) of the new keyboard* trackpad texture is a nice improvement ...
