I own an M1 Pro 16-inch, 16GB RAM, 512 storage Macbook Pro (bought in 2021) and wanted a new second laptop. I was hot for the new M3 chips, but the prices are extremely high. B&H had M2 and M1 chipsets, and I was able to enjoy M1 Max, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD storage for a reasonable price about the same as the base model 16-inch M3 Macbook Pro, so I grabbed it. I am a heavy user of browsers and tabs, typically running three browsers, 30 open tabs in each, simultaneously running Youtube Music, Twitch, a Chess/Goban game. The RAM is at 45-50GB of the 64 GB when I do this (RAM is structured to use what is available) and my pages are snappy in a good way. Can I tell a difference from the M1 Pro 16GB RAM...not discernibly, but almost imperceptibly I can because the pages are ... Can I tell a difference from the M1 Pro 16GB RAM...not discernibly, but almost imperceptibly I can because the pages are preloaded with all this RAM. The only downside I experienced in buying this M1 model is the battery. It was absolute dead zero when I opened the new, factory-sealed Apple box, and opened the lid. I have always had some battery life on all Apple devices (many Macbooks over the years), and it was new for me to have to charge the laptop for a few hours before setting it up; makes me believe these have been in storage at BH Photo for a couple years minimum. Although the battery health reads normal, it is definitely less than normal due to the deep cycle, and is less than compared to my other M1 Macbook Pro. Keep this in mind when you purchase, and perhaps get Applecare so they'll change the battery for you at some point. Great computer, just the same. Love big RAM.

Got the model with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage including 3yr AppleCare+ while there was a hefty discount on that bundle. Wanted it to mainly switch over music creation from my Windows gaming desktop. Use case there is recording guitar using an army of amp sims and VSTi's for bass and drums. Was pretty painless moving all my Cubase projects over and having a second monitor is super helpful, definitely wanted the 16 for that reason. There's still a lot of plugins that are not native to Apple silicon, but more than enough of them are for it not to be a major concern. Even using Rosetta it still performs just fine though I can feel the difference. Even using Rosetta it still performs just fine though I can feel the difference. Just a couple days ago decided to switch back to running it native to see if I could get away with only using plugins that are native to Apple silicon and more than enough selection. It's actually helped me stop tweaking so much and just get on with recording. If you rely on a lot of plugins that are not native yet you'd probably be better off running you DAW in Rosetta to avoid having multiple simultaneous Rosetta instances for each plugin as if the DAW itself is running using Rosetta they run more efficiently. It's kind of nuts that after 2 years+ since M1 (18 months for the M1 Pro/Max) a lot of plugin developers have still not updated most or any of their builds. (Neural DSP looking at you). It's made me take a second look at STL ToneHub and AmpHub, which I'm finding suits my needs. The second reason is software development, but I had an older LG Gram 17 with Fedora on it that was serving that need and I don't really need to talk about how well macOS works for that. Easily replaces that as well. You might be saying, but you didn't need an M1 Max just for music production and software development (no GPU workloads), the GPU is a wasted expense in that case. I decided since I could get the M1 Max cheaper (~$500 at the time I pulled the trigger, not sure if that's changed now) than an M2 Pro with the same 32GB RAM and 1TB storage and 3yr AppleCare+, and the CPU speed was similar enough for my needs it wouldn't matter much. Since it was $500 less for a better GPU I wanted to see how good the GPU would be for some gaming on the side. It's definitely not going to hold any candles to my SFF 5600X + 3080-10G gaming desktop in that regard. And lets be real anyone serious into gaming as a hobby has to still run Windows and buy an expensive GPU. Given that I was pleasantly surprised just how good the M1 Max can handle some decently taxing games. I've been back into a CRPG kick and the ones I have in my list to play until BG3 releases (also native..) and Starfield (will be back on the PC for that one) run fantastically. Quite honestly my gaming desktop is going to gather dust aside until Starfield and maybe the CP2077 DLC.Really happy with the purchase, it's pretty much replaced all my other devices aside from more intense gaming use cases that are Windows only. Getting it new for $500 less than a same spec'd M2 Pro 16 was just icing on the cake.

MoreI recently upgraded to the MacBook Pro 16" with the powerful M1 Max chip, 32GB of memory, and a spacious 1TB SSD in Space Gray. While this machine undoubtedly offers some remarkable features, my overall experience has been a bit of a mixed bag.Let's start with the positives. The M1 Max chip is a powerhouse, delivering impressive performance for everyday tasks, video editing, and multitasking. The 32GB of memory ensures smooth operations, even when running resource-intensive applications simultaneously. The 1TB SSD provides ample storage space, ensuring I can keep all my files and projects in one place. However, there are some notable drawbacks. One of the most significant issues is the screen brightness. Despite being a high-end device, the MacBook Pro 16" falls short in this department. The screen brightness is noticeably dimmer compared to other laptops in the same price range, which can be frustrating, especially in well-lit environments.Another concern is the reliability of the system. Unlike previous MacBook Pro models I've owned, this one has required multiple wipes and reinstalls to address performance issues. This unexpected need for troubleshooting has been both time-consuming and frustrating, raising doubts about the system's overall stability.Furthermore, the MacBook Pro's performance with Adobe Suite, a crucial tool for many professionals, has been less than stellar. While the M1 Max chip is undoubtedly powerful, it seems that Adobe applications are not optimized as well as they could be for the new architecture. This results in occasional lag and suboptimal performance, which can be a significant letdown for creative professionals who rely heavily on these tools. In conclusion, the MacBook Pro 16" with the M1 Max chip has its strengths, but it's not without its flaws. The screen brightness, reliability issues, and subpar performance with Adobe Suite are notable downsides that potential buyers should consider. If you prioritize power and are willing to work around these issues, the MacBook Pro might still be a suitable choice. However, if these drawbacks are deal-breakers for your workflow, you may want to explore alternative options before making a purchase.
