Unfortunately the right side bladder burst at the lake this weekend. Not a minor hole but a massive one. There were no sharp objects around that could have pierced it, and in fact the outer shell is unmarked. So it’s an issue with the construction.A replacement is not available in the USA but can be sourced in the UK for a total cost of $150.This is the 2nd Chinook we’ve had, the first one needed to be replaced after 3 weeks of gentle use due to a leak. Not recommended at all.

My husband and I are 59 & 60. I’m 5’3” and he is 6’. This was recommended to us as a good tandem kayak by the salesperson. We took it out for two days. He used his kayak and I used this one as a single with the dog. It’s maybe six inches deep on the floor but once in the water the floor sinks a bit and my first day I was trying to paddle with the sides of the kayak coming up to my armpits. We truly had it over inflated too because we were on very cold water. That was awful. Didn’t go very far but still had some fun. Day two. Did the same thing I have to do with our F250. I used a booster seat. The problem with that was that made the back of the seat hit me very low allowing for almost no lower back support. I managed to work with that but we were on cold water so ... I managed to work with that but we were on cold water so within 30 minutes I’m halfway across the lake and have lost about 1/4 of my air. Not the kayaks fault but this thing is not speedy in the best of conditions. To finish our trip I was not able at any point allowed to stop and take a breath. My husband passed me with only the wind to his back while I was paddling like my life depended on it. I had once again sunk down so low in the seat I was scraping my knuckles on the sides. I’m not taking it back yet. I’m not giving up. I’m going to get a proper booster seat and a hand pump to top it off while on cold water trips when we stop to take breaks. We are going to try tandem and see how it works with a 6’ man and 5’3” woman. If this works I’ll get myself a nice kayak like his and this will be for friends, family and the two of us. Moral of the story it’s just not good for a small single person.

This kayak did not work for us, at all. Firstly, it is extremely narrow (I'm 5'6" and weigh 125 pounds - my hips barely fit into this kayak!). Secondly, our kayak had a very large "wrinkle" in the boat itself right where the air input valve is that spanned the entire top of the kayak from side to side. Lastly, our knuckles rubbed the side of the kayak every time we paddled which I've never experienced before in any kayak. I have the single Advanced Elements kayak (also purchase from REI) and it is FAR superior in every way. I will be returning this and purchasing the two person Advanced Elements kayak (it's pretty much always true...you get what you pay for!). Yes, the Advanced Elements kayak is three times more money but worth it in my humble opinion.

Bought 2 Chinook 120s about a month ago. (First off, they were "exactly" the same, except they weren't- valves were different, overall "make" as different). Finally able to try them out (had test-inflated one prior to trip), the one that we didn't test inflate has a wonky "pucker" near the air valve. This causes the side of the kayak to pull in and not inflate properly. Deflated and tried again, pucker seemed better, but it leaked air the whole trip and the kayak tracked/looked funky in the water. The pre-tested kayak did great. Fast forward to the second trip (the next day), we had checked out the "pucker" spot after the 1st trip- maybe the pillow was twisted, so we made adjustments. The puckered kayak seemed ok and inflated well. So did the pretested kayak. Once on the water, the pretested kayak's right side started losing air (was almost flat by end of trip, despite checking valves and for leaks). Water was filling the bottom of the kayak as well. The seam on the nose end was seperated, letting water in. We had to stop halfway through the trip and drain the water. "Pucker" on the 2nd kayak reappeared during trip.On our way to REI to return. What a HUGE disappointment (and frustration, the closest REI is 2.5 hours the OPPOSITE way of where we're heading). Would NOT recommend these kayaks- they've cost us vacation time (both on the river and the drive to return so we can get something that will hopefully actually work), plus FUEL.Lesson learned, sometimes poor reviews are a warning.
I'd heard mixed reviews of inflatable kayaks in general, but I decided to try this one out since I didn't have a car rack for a hard-shelled kayak. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is a pain to inflate. I bought the Advanced Elements 12 Volt Electric Pump, which definitely speeds up the process, but the design of the kayak is still rather odd. As soon as you pull the pump out, it starts deflating, so you have to quickly put the cap back on. I've never seen a kayak with this flaw before, so perhaps it is user error..? Nevertheless, once it's in the water, it does a good job of tracking and is lots of fun in lakes, lagoons, and easy rivers. It's not meant for harsher water, though. I usually use it as a tandem kayak even though they say it can be used solo ... I usually use it as a tandem kayak even though they say it can be used solo because it's rather heavy and cumbersome once inflated. If you have the storage space, definitely get a hard-shelled kayak! That being said, it's still a solid kayak and it's convenient to be able to pack it away. Despite what other reviews said, it doesn't take too long to dry out and thus can be packed away a day or two at most after being in the water.
My dog and I absolutely loved this kayak. It was resistant enough for his paws and had enough roof for him(85lbs. Black Labrador) and myself. The inflation and tearing down was easy. Took only 10 minutes or so for both. The seats were highly comfortable. Would recommend a kayak life vest instead. Was easy to paddle on the calm of the Colorado River. Sometimes with motorized boats or the current would be strong, you may feel a little more work while paddling but still stayed solid. Would highly recommend. I also bought the larger version of this, Chinook 120. If your partner and yourself are medium/tall, I would recommend the Chinook 120 to give you a little more leg room for both.
This would be perfect for the right person, but it isn't quite right for us. We are a 70s-ish couple who do a lot of car camping. We need a durable, lightweight and portable substitute for our hard sided kayaks. We do well, um...OK paddling a tandem, so this looked like a good possibility. The kayak is much heavier than the advertised 23 pounds. In the bag, with floor, seats and foot rests, it weighed 32 pounds.Inflation was easy, and quicker than we expected with a cheap pump left over from a failed airbed. The adaptor didn't fit the pump well, and if we were keeping this kayak we would need a better pump.Inflated, with floor in, the kayak is only about 6 inches deep. I would call it a sit-on-top model, not a sit-in with an open cockpit. There are two zippered pockets in the side tubes. We couldn't figure out what they are for. You wouldn't be able to put anything in them, other than maybe a fishing license. There are 4 places to attach the seats, but only one configuration allowed enough leg room for both of us. My husband is 5"2 and 130 pounds, and I am 5"5 and 145. We are well within the weight limit for the boat, but on our living room floor, we were very dubious that we would be able to distribute our weight properly and sit comfortably.Speaking of sitting comfortably, we had to adjust the seat straps all the way in to avoid a semi-reclining position, and the seat backs are very low. After about 2-3 minutes, our backs were begging for more support. We had planned to try it out on the water when the weather warms up, but achy backs are a deal breaker for us.This kayak would be ideal for an apartment-dwelling single parent and child, or a person who wants to go kayaking with a small-to-medium size dog. We don't fish, but the fishing rod holders in the seats looked OK, although you would have to twist around in your seat to reach them.Thank goodness for REI's return policy! We'll take it back tomorrow and continue our search. Now that this kayak has been out of the box, maybe the store can use it as a floor model, where it will catch the eye of that perfect owner.
I recently purchased a Chinook 100 inflatable kayak from REI. I was told that I would need a high speed car pump to blow this up. You do not need this. Sides inflate to 2 psi and floor to 1 psi. The car pump did not inflate the kayak at all. We drove to the nearest REI and purchased an Aquaglide hand pump. Avoid this product at all costs as this pump is not user friendly. We were desperate though and thankful for this option. We were also very thankful for Larry at the Bellingham WA REI he was a real life saver helping us to navigate appropriate nozzles for the pump. The nozzles that came with the kayak do NOT work for inflating it. They are useless and it is puzzling why such waste was even included. The nozzles that came with the kayak do NOT work for inflating it. They are useless and it is puzzling why such waste was even included. Once on the water, this kayak is a dream for a novice kayaker like myself. It is also lightweight and easy to maneuver. Thus the “4” rating. The instruction manual is horrid, best used as fuel to get your campfire going. We did not have an option to view anything online because we were in a remote area. The instruction manual lists warnings in about 7 different languages. It is otherwise brief on any and all content related to assembly of the kayak itself. If you have not familiarized yourself beforehand with the particular features and set up of this kayak, you will get no information from the instruction manual. Overall, this is a good kayak for someone like myself who likes to drift on a calm lake, avoid tying an object to the top of their car, and dislikes lugging heavy equipment.
Overall set up is similar to other 3 chambered kayaks. Fast and simple. That's about what's good about it. Tracking with skeg on is ok but still drifts left and right when paddling. It's comfortable. That's what earned it 2 stars.Now. the issues were the valves. Simply said. They leak... Enough said. we've removed and re installed to no avail. can always hear a slight hiss on inflate mode with the boston valves. For some reason, the left and right chambers inflate unevenly even though are under recommended psi. the kayak looks uneven either at the bow or stern depending what mood the boat is on.I'm sorry aquaglide for this review but I really wanted to like this kayak. You have read enough reviews by now, the Boston valves are a pain (the strings get in the way, and when you turn the one you end up loosening the other by accident). The bottom ring holds the cover to the bladder, this needs to be somewhat tight, but not too tight or cause a twist in the bladder. The middle ring will take the valve out for deflation, the top ring is removed for inflation. The floor has a smaller version of this which seems to be the main complain of this Kayak, it does ship with the nozzle fitting to use for the floor (made to fit AG pumps) The nozzle diameter is about 8mm. You can wrap electrical tape around the nozzle to improve the fit.Plucker problem: I also had one side with "plucker" or a strange crease on one side, this is caused by the ... You can wrap electrical tape around the nozzle to improve the fit.Plucker problem: I also had one side with "plucker" or a strange crease on one side, this is caused by the bladder being too far towards the rear of the boat, there is no space to expand and cause a crease. This is an easy fix, when deflated, open the zippers and pull the bladder towards the front of the boat. In fact, if you see the two sides not aligned at the bow or stern, you can make this adjustment to make them even. You can reach under the tip of the boat and confirm one side is taking up more space than the other. It may take some repeated inflation cycles and minor adjustments but you can get it much better than how it came from the factory. Finally try to adjust the valve "ring" so it is not twisted. On the water, this is a slow but sturdy kayak, it tracks well. Even if they give you the small child seat to suggest it can do more than tandem, there is not a lot of room for that, just to stress test this, we managed to fit 2 adults, a child plus a toddler but it was very cramped and not much room for proper paddle technique. It was overcrowded but did not feel overloaded weight wise. But the kids had fun which was what mattered. The most painful is probably drying, there is a fabric covering the sides and floor, this is water resistant but they do soak up water. You have to take out the floor and dry the pieces. It helps to inflate the sides partially so there are no crease to hold moisture. This can take a day or more, you also want to remove any sand under the floor. I do keep it out of the sun to avoid heat damage. You would want to have good rinse and clean routine to protect your investment. But this type of kayak is definitely the most work of all kayaks.I feel the price may be kind of high as there are many similar kayaks but the Chinook is the highest price of its kind. For the price, it was not perfect, I had to deal with the adjustment (hopefully a one time adjustment), poor valves, drying. Mine had a tear in the stitching between the fabric and the hull. This was definitely an underwhelming experience. The Chelan and Blackfoot cost hundreds more, doubling the cost. They are made of a waterproof skin drying is much faster, and the valves are easy to use, more leg room and perform better on the water. You will have the decide the cost and benefit of the Chinook vs the higher price Kayaks.
