Arcteryx Large Beta AR Women’s Jacket - phantasm

I primarily bought the Beta AR jacket because I was tired of spending a few hundred dollars on a shell every few years. The jackets would inevitably wear out and the zipper would start sticking. After reading every review I could, I decided fo bite the bullet and spend the money on the Beta AR. I am 5’9” and weigh about 140 pounds. The problem I tend to have with jackets is that they are often too short in the sleeves for my long arms.I liked the phantasm (plum/eggplant colour) and bought a size large. I was thrilled when it arrived and the sleeves are definitely long enough - with a bit of extra length for me!! It is not a flimsy shell. I’ve only had it for about a week, so I can’t attest to performance in the rain or snow yet. It seems like a great coat to me and I am very happy with my purchase.

I searched the other jackets from ArcTeryx and none have this feature - so a cost savings for them but a real bummer for the user. Finally they changed the collar area that protects your neck - it's higher and provides better protection against wind and rain, but if you don't need to be "Buttoned Up" it's kind of annoying - so great in horrible weather, a bit much when it's not so bad out.As others notated the waterproof of this jacket does not last - you have to constantly re-coat with some sort of waterproof/repellence product. This is true with all Gore-Tex out there - The fit is excellent - I went a size up to layer winter clothing but even without the extra layers it is not bulky - vents well (pit zips) and the many adjustments on the hood are great.

Adjusting base and mid-layers I have worn the jacket in temps from -20 to 35 F and been comfortable. A few of my favorite things ... Room in the shoulders for full movement, pit zips, high pockets (work well with backpack waist belt), sleeves are the perfect length - don't ride up but not so long that they get in the way when using my hands. The it is comfortable with only a single baselayer without feeling over sized. I have worn upto a base layer, vest, and mid-layer without feeling like a stuffed sausage. For skiing the only thing missing is a powder skirt, but I didn't miss it.

I really want to love this jacket....
7 April 2021

This replaced my first beta AR (which I loved until it delaminated after only one season and the pockets would fill with water). I would like to think I simply had a jacket that slipped through the cracks in terms of quality control, especially as none of the quick “fixes” worked either. But oh how I miss that Whiskey Jack colour. Can’t fault the customer service - this was very quickly taken care of for me in terms of a credit and once I could find a replacement (I get it - the outdoors is in an even higher demand during Covid). However I wanted to upgrade to Alpha AR which was to be “restocked in 2 weeks” yet that message lasted for 2 months until I was informed “try Fall 2021”. So I’m giving the beta a second chance.Have high hopes for my replacement ... MoreThis replaced my first beta AR (which I loved until it delaminated after only one season and the pockets would fill with water). I can understand wear & tear but I’ll be raising my eyebrows if I only get a season out of this. I have no problem paying for quality but that’s what I should then receive. The kingfisher colour is much nicer in reality than online too (apparently I like the bird theme colours). I can still nicely layer underneath too even in an XS. Sleeves a bit long on me but not a big deal in the grand scheme.

Love the collar
2 March 2022

I shopped around for a Gortex shell to invest in. I chose the Beta specifically for the collar, so please keep it! It's great for keeping out the elements with the hood down. My only complaint is the sizing. I am between xs and small, opted for the small for layering. The shoulders in both sizes seemed to have too much fabric. Some reviews said the jacket wore better after some use, I still find it an issue still. I have broad shoulders and even with layers underneath there is still extra fabric that bunches up in the shoulder area. For the price point, I want it to fit amazing which is why I give it four stars. I'm also not a fan of the colour scheme these days, bring back vibrant mountain colours! Also shout out to Arcteryx customer service, it's a big factor when ... MoreI shopped around for a Gortex shell to invest in. I chose the Beta specifically for the collar, so please keep it! My Go-To Adventure Jacket!
7 April 2022

This is my must-have jacket for hiking, backpacking and mountain climbing. Don't let its light weight fool you! This Gore-Tex jacket is the perfect shell for all weather: rain, snow and wind. I've taken these jackets to ski resorts, local hikes and longer trips such as Mt. Whitney, Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro, where I have encountered four seasons in a day! The Beta AR has always delivered. This jacket has kept me dry while also fitting perfectly. I really like the hood that comes with this jacket. It keeps the water and wind off my face really well. And, I love the color options!I will be bringing this jacket on upcoming climbs, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to venture out into the elements. It has been my go-to outer shell for years, and hasn't let me down once. Make sure to take care of it, as it will last longer if you do. I try to wash mine after a good 10 uses. I've had a few of these (yes I have more than one!) for years, and they still hold up.It's also super easy to pack when I'm not using it, and doesn't take up a lot of room in my backpack. That's a huge plus, because I like to pack as light as I can.I highly recommend this jacket. It's great for so many activities!

Overpriced rain jacket

Used to love this jacket but the new fit is awful
8 November 2017

My boyfriend bought me the Beta AR 5 years ago and it has been wonderful - great for any outdoor activity and I had many adventures in it. It packs great, washes great and fit great. However, after 5 years, I went to get my jacket replaced and although customer service was amazing at the store, I was ultimately dissatisfied. I have a few Arc'teryx pieces and I love how well-crafted they are but the new Beta AR is surprisingly dissapointing. The fit is no longer true to size and I understand that they may have meant for more versatility and layering - however, the sleeves, especially near the shoulder and armpit are incredibly unproportional. Even if you size down to compensate for the overall size increase, the waist is too small and the sleeves are still too wide. As it is an all-around piece, I would not expect someone to layer multiple layers underneath it so there is no need for the extra room. If I needed the layering space I would have purchased a more durable, winter-weight shell such as the SV or just the size up.In addition, the front pocket zips have changed and are awkward. I believe it is the only style that zips the opposite way to close (downwards). It may save on weight but I'm not sure why they only changed this particular style. For the original fit and model, I would have definitely given this jacket 5 stars, however, I think that though the craftsmanship and durability is still amazing on this product, it was the fit that separated it from other options on the market. This new fit unfortunately makes the jacket less functional.

Wets out after little use
3 August 2022

I've had two of these jackets (one I bought in 2017, one that got replaced under warranty in 2019). Both of them started wetting out frequently despite following the specific care instructions for washing/drying the jacket and spraying with DWR spray. They also started coming apart near the shoulder area (2 layers of the jacket separating). Once they wet out, they take forever to dry! I was told my jacket can't be replaced under warranty a second time, which is fair, but I'd expect better performance from such an expensive jacket, especially when I don't use it for super intense activities. I use it for light cycle commuting in the city as well as day hikes in the mountains when I'm on vacation. I use it for light cycle commuting in the city as well as day hikes in the mountains when I'm on vacation. It’s frustrating that these jackets (that cost a significant amount) require such frequent high maintenance care to continue working well (or unfortunately not so well, as has been my experience). I’ve spoken with people who have other brands of gore-Tex outer layers who say their gear maintains the waterproofing with much less care and washing than I’ve put into my beta AR. Especially after the first one having similar issues, I washed and sprayed my second one religiously, likely every 10-15 uses. And I rarely use it for any heavy activities- it’s never gotten properly dirty or sweaty because I wash it so often. I hope arc’teryx can use this feedback to improve its gear so issues like this no longer happen.

Worth every penny
18 December 2023

I hemmed and hawed over buying this expensive rain jacket. However, after backpacking in the rain and getting soaking wet with a “waterproof” jacket I decided it was worth a shot. I bought a medium, because I was able to try on a small at a local REI store and it was a tad snug. I think Arc’teryx runs a little snug, or fitted, on their stuff. I took it on a very recent trip with threats of rain drops, and this jacket delivered. Perfect hood. Pockets to keep your valuables dry. It is worth every single penny. And it’s so expensive it may be one of those things I can pass down to my children in my will. “I bequeath unto you my expensive rain jacket.”
