I unfortunately did not read the reviews before buying a new Gamma MX hoody. I had one I purchased 10 years ago in grey and decided I wanted it in Black instead. I should have realized something was up when I was able to sell my old jacket for nearly the same price as a new one.The new one does still look good and I get compliments on it, but it doesn't feel as easy to wear now that the cuffs are longer and the fit is bigger. It's especially noticeable with the front chin cuff. I used to wear my old one zipped all the way up all the time. But, with this jacket it's too high and baggy.

I ordered this shell because my last one failed and they warranted it. This one is similar to the last one but seems a little lighter. Unfortunately it has no pit zips and no straps on the cuffs. Arc Teryx is obviously cutting corners and trying to appeal to casual users. I'll probably sell it on the secondary market and buy a different shell from a company that doesn't cut corner. Disappointing.

Trust I hesitated on buying this because it’s a 400$ soft shell but honestly worth every penny. Haven’t worn it mountain biking yet. But I did wear on a few days with rainfall and it holds up pretty well. I did see some very wet marks on the ends of the cuff and bottom portion but it dried quickly and the water beaded right off. Quality is top tier and the fit is very close athletic type. I’m not a body builder and weight in at 150 pounds and 5’7 in height. I’ve tried wearing a fleece underneath and it felt like too much. Maybe a merino short sleeve or long sleeve would be the best combination with this jacket.

Purchased this jacket over month ago, and have used it for everything from cycling and nordic skiing to snowboarding. I have found it ideal for many active pursuits. The secret is picking the right mid-layer. When cycling, the jacket is perfect with just a heavy wool / light fleece mid layer. Hood is large enough to pull up over a bike helmet, yet still allows good visibility. The red color is a bonus, when riding in a town full of distracted drivers. On its own, the jacket is perfect for nordic skiing. Good length, plenty of stretch, yet very breathable. Nice to have the hood when you stop too. Two weeks ago, when temps were in the teens, I wore the jacket snowboarding with a light weight down shirt as my mid-layer and stayed comfortable the entire day. Two weeks ago, when temps were in the teens, I wore the jacket snowboarding with a light weight down shirt as my mid-layer and stayed comfortable the entire day. The cuff design is nice too - simple, yet functional. Ample room if you choose under cuff gloves (cycling/nordic skiing) or an over-cuff mitt (skiing/snowboarding).I found the sizing to be accurate - I am 5'11" and 175 lbs and the large is ideal. Not too large on its own, but still allows room for a lightweight fleece / down jacket underneath.
This new GAMMA MX HOODY is great! The Black Sapphire colour is nice and modern especially for our fall season. I just got this jacket a few days ago and I really like the way it fits so far. The new soft shell material feels better than previous models and wearing it on both sunny and rainy days really holds up nicely. As for the fit, it's roomy enough for a thicker sweater and warm enough for a t-shirt. The only thing I wish it adopted from other models of this price point is an inner and arm pocket as well. Lastly, this jacket is perfect for our local Vancouver fall weather and I am hoping they stock up soon so I can get another colour for the winter/spring!
This is my 4th Gamma MX. It’s pretty heavy duty with four ventilation pockets and light fleece bonded to the inside as a slight insulation. The dwr from factory is usually pretty good for light rain.My only issue with it is the cuff design. I miss the old cuffs which are more like an atom or proton cuff. I honestly can’t understand why these are designed this way. If it had the old cuffs I would give it 5 stars!I use this for skiing as it fits over my ski helmet well and if I size up I can fit extra Insulation underneath. Of course if it’s really windy and cold I’d recommend a hard shell.
Out of the box, the Gamma MX Hoody is like most Arcteryx gear I've purchased. Well designed with high end materials and construction. What's from 2020 Gamma MX jacket that I liked so much that I bought two of and wear daily year round? The material. I love the old Gamma MX. I'll circle back once I use the redesigned 2024 product with an updated review. What else changed? Cuff design. These look ok and incorporate an elastic product, but the old ones held up in daily wear and still work well after 3 plus years. The fit is said to be different as well. But after a 50 pound weight loss and ordering a size smaller, I'm not a good judge at this point.
This is not a jacket I use when spending time in the backcountry. While it love it for its breathability, water resistance and wind resistance, it’s simply too heavy and bulky to throw into my pack when I’m not wearing it. A lighter weight soft shell is much more versatile…better when moving fast…still wind resistant, more breathable and when I need a higher level of water resistance, I put on my lightweight hard shell. This jacket does, however, excel as an everyday jacket, for all the reasons described above. Plus, it looks awesome! It is the perfect combination between outdoorsy and dressy. I can wear this to the office on a sketchy days and then on drizzly cold days hikes on the weekend.I’m 6’-2” tall, weight 190 lbs and wear a size large. Fits perfectly.
Absolutely love the old versions of this jacket which fit like a glove without restricting movement. I will not purchase this new version. This new model, which has the exact same name as older models, has less articulated arms with different panel designs and somewhat less stretchy material such that it no longer allows the same freedom of movement in the arms. Particularly when reaching full forward. The arm pocket for holding a resort pass has been deleted. The changes in the cuff design may actually be an improvement for those of us with large sports watches that tend to get trapped by the cuff, but I can't confirm that since I will not purchase this new model since it no longer is functional for most of my activities and going up a size just looks baggy. ... MoreAbsolutely love the old versions of this jacket which fit like a glove without restricting movement. Arcteryx should create new product names or qualify them with a version number or some such instead of hiding significant redesigned products behind earlier successes. Like model years with cars, bicycles, etc, it would make purchasing used versions, gift giving, and reordering significantly easier.
