An interesting mix of smoke, salt and sweetness.

I bought this for a friend who was hosting a dinner party, knowing that we would be drinking it that night. I knew what I was getting into and wanted a peated scotch we haven't tried yet. I have wanted to try an Ardbeg and thought this one would be interesting, plus the cost is reasonable. All of us guys who drank it, really liked it. The girls not so much, but that really isn't their thing. It is not as smoky as others, but the smoke is there. The primary taste was a brine/saltwater for me, but there is a background fruity sweetness to it that was really nice and not just a dry malt taste. I think it is worth the cost if you want to try something interesting. Now I'm looking forward to trying other Ardbegs.

Over one month, I've been drinking of this bottle. Each time I sip from my glass my first sensation is the harsh astringency that stays for more than a moment, followed by a whorl of fleeting sweet flavors that dissipate quickly. Smoke lingers while the initial pepper stays on the top of the mouth. Honey hints remain in the outer edges. One must work hard to find seduction, or redemption in this drink.

This whisky as others have mentioned is ‘normally’ not something you would jump into as a novice whisky drinker. This is a peated Islay single malt and regarding by many as one of, if not the finest whisky you can buy and has some very loyal, almost fanatical fans. For many years I didn’t enjoy peated whisky, finding them too medicinal and smokey, so normally gave them a wide berth. However, as they are so highly regarding (and because I'm stubborn!), I kept trying them and recently came to enjoy Laphroaig and Lagavulin. I often read this is supposed to be the most heavily peated, so it often passed me by as I was frankly scared of it!Then I had an epiphany moment in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, where I thought what the heck let’s try it. Wow, why did I hesitate? Yes ... MoreThis whisky as others have mentioned is ‘normally’ not something you would jump into as a novice whisky drinker. Wow, why did I hesitate? Yes this whisky is peaty (which I now love), but there’s so much complexity to this dram and once you get past the peat, there are rich layers of sweetness and citrus notes. It lingers on the tongue for sometime, so has a very long finish. I like it neat or with a tiny drop of water, which develops the flavour, let it sit for awhile and it really opens up. Taste is hugely subjective and you might never like this, but if you enjoy whisky, try to seek it out – it may just change your enjoyment of whisky for ever.I’m now a confirmed Ardbeg fanatic, it will always be in my collection and right now I’ve got 4 unopened spares! Is it the best whisky in the world?, who knows. But for me it’s certainly the best I’ve tasted.

I Am Curious (Scotch)
17 January 2023

Having enjoyed a luxuriant 15-year Dalwhinnie as my first single malt scotch, I decided to dive into another part of the pool with an Islay product—no time for the measured approach; I am not getting any younger. Some of the sparse, unfavorable reviews of this peaty-smokey icon had me trembling with anticipation as I poured myself a dram, neat. Hmmm…smells like Scotch; tastes like Scotch. It was only during my second sampling over a single, perfect cube of ice that the aggressive flavor profile came through. I must love benzene and Band-Aids, because I truly love this Scotch, even more as I alternated sips with the Dalwhinnie, which only helped flesh out the distinct character of each, and appreciate each other more. Simply outstanding, and definitely worth trying

If you're like me and most of your experience with Scotch is the mellower, fruitier Speysides & Highlands, or blended Scotches, you're in for a very different experience. This whisky is a symphony of smoke and salinity. The nose reminds me of new leather, and bacon cooked on a campfire, a really intense smoky and savory aroma. Palate is salty, briny, meaty, something bitter earthy, ashy, the smoke is present but not overpowering or unpleasant. It perfectly complements the other flavors. Finish is quite dry and leathery. At 46% ABV it has body, depth, richness, but is still very smooth. I typically prefer sweet, dark fruity, sherried Scotch, but I have to say this is really good stuff, and absolutely worth trying if you're open to enjoying the smokier style of Scotch ... MoreIf you're like me and most of your experience with Scotch is the mellower, fruitier Speysides & Highlands, or blended Scotches, you're in for a very different experience. The Aroma of Elysium
14 August 2022

I have truly come to love this Scotch, as much for the aroma as the taste. Man, oh man! Put this in a whiskey tasting glass and stick your nose right in and inhale! The blast of aroma you get is unlike any other whiskey. The peat and smoke on the palate are almost like licking a barbecue grill, but in a good way. If you want a more extreme example of the Islay style, you can't do better than this.

Very intense and interesting.

Walk to the garden section of your local home depot. Specifically by the garden hoses. Now place a campfire there. That is precisely what this whisky smells like.On the palate, It hits you immediately with an incredibly strong peat smoke flavor that will take a little getting used to. But after swallowing, the intensity will quickly leave and you'll be left with a mouth full of heavily salty and smokey barbecue. Is this whiskey good? As a fan of barbecue, campfires, and maybe even the garden section of home depot yes! I think this is fantastic! But if none of those are your thing you might want to stay away.

What a fantastic whisky

Such a sublime whisky. It has a light colour when poured, which is deceptive, only because many 10 year old whiskies add a colouring to portray strength and depth. Ardberg dispenses with all that nonsense, and just gets down to delivering on flavour.I believe the best way to judge a whisky is on three criteria:1) Do you like it.2) How many flavours can you taste.3) Is it 3-dimensional, i.e. the flavours change throughout you sipping and swallowing it.Most good whiskies deliver on #1 and #2. This 10 year Ardberg delivers on all three. In the mouth, it has a delicious sweetness, which you can happily swirl around for a minute or so. smoky standard
28 January 2023

Run away now if you don’t like very smoky whisky. The colour is pale amber, not betraying the 46% abv. The nose says chloroform knock-you-out, the palate is a smooth surprise. Described as fruity by some, but more like your typical salty, seaspray Islay. A small amount of water will enhance the flavour but if you use too much water or anything with flavour as a mixer, it may ruin the experience. I compared the Ardbeg 10 glass-to-glass to Caol Ila 12 and there’s not much difference in overall quality. Both are amongst my favourite single malts. I’d buy whichever is cheapest, usually the Ardbeg 10.
