A Fantastic New Tool for Painters
14 April 2022ANDREW C

I'm a fairly new painter: while I started playing miniatures when I was pretty young, I only started to paint them in earnest about two years ago. I had tried several techniques, including Contrast Paints, and mostly found my results to be adequate, but nothing to get excited about.Recently, I started a new painting process where I use a zenithal undercoat (I spray black primer and then do a heavy grey drybrush, followed by a slightly lighter white one) and put Army Painter Speedpaints over the top. The results so far have led to some of the best things I've ever painted. The level of detail and character I have been able to bring to miniatures with this technique has been amazing, and it would not be possible without this product. I can't wait to get more of them!

A nice alternative to Citadel's Contrast Paints

First, don't think of these as Contrast clones, they are not. They are their own product, not Contrast Clones. There are tons of reviews on YouTube. The big thing that may be an issue is they can reactivate when painted over. Army Painter recommends giving them a light coat of spray-on varnish before painting any additional highlights. The big thing for me is they seem to work much nicer over larger flatter areas like cloaks and seem to have less tea staining on flatter surfaces that Contrast. Not to mention they are a heck of a lot cheaper.

The Speedpaint from Army Painter is exactly what I need to finish painting my miniature collections so I can finally get those games back to the table. I've been sitting on Marvel Crisis Protocol and Star Wars Legion and Imperial Assault forever because once I had a few competently painted figures, I hated playing the games with the figures in the flat plastic colors they came in.These paints are great, especially as someone who has gained some basic painting skills, but stalls on getting going becuase of the amount of time it takes. Good product, but there is an issue
24 March 2022

I was amazed at how well these cover, shading and highlighting to a decent standard in a single coat. Having said that, I have had to deal with the reactivation issue. I had let a mini dry 4-6 hours and tried to apply a brush on varnish. With other acrylic paint this would not be an issue, with these the blue in particular reactivated and flowed over into other areas and made a mess. I was able to fix it by brushing the affected areas with water, letting it dry several hours and reapplying speed paint. I then let it cure overnight and applied a spray varnish. I have had some success applying acrylic paint over speed paint with out reactivating, it the issue does occur and you must adjust your process to account for itIn my case, I can and have adjusted. It does what it says, but...
22 March 2022

As with so many of the Army Painter products I've tried, it seems to fall short. I feel like every AP product I've ever used requires an asterisk to explain the inherent shortcomings. While it does provide a "one coat" painting solution, the stuff doesn't really seem to cure. Dry, yes - but cure? No.So if you want to add additional paint over it, you seal it. And if that additional paint is Speedpaint - you have to seal it again before adding more. (Watch Juan Hidalgo's video on YT.)I also wasn't really impressed with how it went on. It's a bit too thick. It works fine if you're after a "one coat, seal it, get it to the tabletop" process. But if you like the flexibility that GW's one coat solution brings - this is not a cheaper alternative. It's a "less than".

Less Painting more playing
5 October 2022

I got these to plow thru a massive miniatures board game paint job I had for Altar Quest. I later went and got the MEGA set of this, as it ads almost double the colors. You can do ALOT with this beginner set though. solid colors like the Hardened Leather, crusader skin, gravelord grey, and palid bone are my workhorse colors for most projects.

More Fun than Frustration

Ordered the Speedpaint set before the reactivation issue became a topic of conversation and was a little wary as a result. But these are amazing, and I have already ordered some singles to round out the starter set. There is much more of a learning curve than the reviews online would lead one to believe, but after painting a few miniatures and a few mistakes, I am becoming well versed in the way of the Speedpaint. It boils down to not trying to do too much too soon since they take a while to dry and using the brush to carry and deposit paint and varnish (tapping and dabbing instead of sweeping brushstrokes) after the initial coat and around details. The reactivation can also be a plus in some cases. Perfect for rush jobs

I haven't used these on models that I'm trying to up the level on, but they're great for things you want to quickly throw down on a table. Amazing for DND stuffYou can 3d print, build, and paint up a bunch of models a few hours before you meet up with friends. Dry brush on top either before or after applying the paint and you're good to go.I'm sure you can make these look great if you take your time as well, I just like using them for lazy paint jobs

SPEED PAINT it's in the name.
5 October 2022

I was skeptical of these paints at first. But they do a really good job. An amazing miniature painter can do better with regular paints. But someone who does not have a bunch of technique or a painter that's short on time. These paints will help you get more time playing instead of painting. This is a one coat soution. You can use multiple colors on one miniature. Just make sure you're only doing one nice heavy coat. This will give shadows and highlights using the texture of the miniature.

Speedpain Starter Set
11 April 2022

My brother has been working with minis for decades now. He loves modeling, painting, and table-top gaming. He has an EXTENSIVE collection of tools, crafts, paints, materials, etc., all for the purpose of mini painting/modeling. So what do you get the man who has everything? Well, this is what he requested. So if it's something he valued, I'm sure other will be satisfied with it too! Happy painting!
