One of the flatter Asterix books, although still miles better than any of the ones written after Goscinny died. The basic idea is that when a legion of Romans gets demobbed, they all get given gifts of land in the Empire; one Roman, who had insulted Caesar the night before, gets given Asterix's village to teach him a lesson. Unfortunately this is sold to a Gaulish innkeeper who comes to claim it. The story is less gripping than some of the others but it does raise an interesting moral dilemma. Who SHOULD get to be chief of the village? Everyone is an innocent victim trying to claim what rightly should be his or hers. Although the storyline is sparse it is fully competent writing and even somewhat thought-provoking.
