For the price point of $250, I would expect it to be unboxed in a plug and play capacity. That is not the case. So no big deal, I just need to update the firmware myself. That should be easy, right? Wrong. I've tried to update the firmware. I've tried two computers, Mac and windows, 3 versions of the Astro Command Center (the windows website version, the mac website version, and the microsoft store version), automatic updates, manual updates, scouring the internet for any grain of advice that could assist, and contacting Astro/Logitech support. Good Headset in 2023, Last Gen Focused
18 July 2023

TL:DR A good headset for PC, bypass for current generation consoles. Not bad for music.I purchased these headphones in Sept of 2019 and found them to be a solid option for gaming on the PS4 Pro at the time. The sound quality is definitely in that 70/30 range, where it covers the middle 70% of the sound range. The treble is a touch lacking, and the bass can go comfortably low, but probably a 15% loss in range on each. Definitely a solid gaming headset though as it had good mic clarity and clear audio. The MixAmp is nice to have for on-the-fly adjustments, no doubt about that, but is still kind of bland in terms of actual controls. The first thing I did was update the firmware and it made a world of difference in sound quality. Having the preset buttons was nice to cycle through depending on whether I was gaming online or solo.Comfort wise, the headset rests well on my head but does get a little warm after an hour or so, but hey not many headsets are able to vent well so in my experience it is pretty average. The not so great; when I upgraded to PS5, the adapter they made really was inadequate. To bypass the optical connection the PS5 no longer had, their adapter was splitting audio off the HDMI. The kicker was that the adapter interrupted the video signal and then forced it to go through a lower HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1. This matters as I have an OLED CX that is able to do 4k at 120hz, which the PS5 is also capable of, yet the adapter reduces the output to 4k at 60hz max. When I reached out to customer support on this, they basically told me "not everyone has a TV with HDMI 2.1 so get over it." Well, now in 2023, most TVs come standard with at least one 2.1 port, so poor choice on their side, and the sass was less than appreciated. That being said, I do have this headset connected to my gaming PC and in 2023, it is still a great option if you are using it for that medium.Side note, I listen to music on this headset on the PC as well, and it isn't a bad option to jam out to since you can access the EQ in their app. The software is kind of bland as well, but it gets the job done. No, it is nowhere near my Focal Clear's, but not bad for an inexpensive alternative.

Mixamp would not update - 4 hours down the drain
28 November 2022

Let me start by saying I have owned an Astro Mixamp & Headset for 6 years and have always loved them, and have recommended them to dozens of friends/gamers online. Recently, I purchased their latest generation (gen 4) of mixamp/headset for my Xbox Series X, and ran into problem after problem with trying to get it to work.First off, the installation instructions in the packaging were extremely simple sounding - pretty much plug into Xbox and you're good to go. Sounded too good to be true...and it was. I quickly found out I was receiving no sound with the headset/mixamp plugged in as instructed. After about 20 minutes of trying on my Xbox, I resorted to online forums where I found out the mixamp's firmware needed to be updated - via the Astro Command Center (Astro's ...Ā MoreLet me start by saying I have owned an Astro Mixamp & Headset for 6 years and have always loved them, and have recommended them to dozens of friends/gamers online. Sounded too good to be true...and it was. I quickly found out I was receiving no sound with the headset/mixamp plugged in as instructed. After about 20 minutes of trying on my Xbox, I resorted to online forums where I found out the mixamp's firmware needed to be updated - via the Astro Command Center (Astro's software for updating/adjusting settings). Not a big deal, except the instructions/paperwork that came with it mentioned nothing about this! After downloading their software, I plugged in my device and it immediately recognized it and gave the option to update the firmware. Sounded promising. However, this is where things went significantly downhill. Every time I tried updating, it would fail. No matter what combination of methods I tried, including: using different USB ports/cables, uninstalling/reinstalling Astro Command Center, downloading the firmware file/trying to update manually, switching it back and forth from 'Xbox/PC mode', etc - and attempted all previous steps on 3 different computers. I even ensured my firewall/security software was not blocking the update. This led me down a combined 4 hour rabbit hole on various platforms including Astro's website, Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter & more. Today (11/28/22) I tried calling their support center to be greeted with a 2 hour wait with no avail. So 4 hours research PLUS 2 hours of waiting on hold! I will now be returning it to Amazon and will NOT be using or recommending their products any longer. Such a waste of time, and I was so excited to use it after loving the previous model so much! I am sorry to say, that you have lost a customer today Astro...

They don’t work on Xbox
12 December 2022

Don’t purchase this thinking you can run it on Xbox right away. It doesn’t work until the firmware is updated. However, Astro has a buggy control center program to update the firmware that doesn’t work, and has had known issues for 2 years. Their tech support will offer solutions like try a different USB cable and/or computer, and that’s about the most advanced their troubleshooting will get. I would expect for $250 that I’d get a product that works with the system it is advertised for right out of the box. If that’s too much to ask then at least have the software fixed to allow for firmware updates to be done. But at this point, purchasing this headset, you are rolling the dice that you’ll be one of the few to get these to work on the Xbox. Astro just doesn’t seem to care about their customer base and continues to sell a product that they are fully aware doesn’t work as intended.I’d highly suggest any potential buyers look into ā€œAstro a40 firmware update issuesā€ before wasting money on this product, I unfortunately didn’t and it cost me an extra trip to Best Buy to return them.

You can't beat the sound quality and comfort of these. I mainly got them because of the fact that Astros are the only headphones that I can wear for hours without any fatigue. The second selling point for me was the mixamp. I like being able to easily control chat vs game volume. I thought I'd use the surround more than I have. It seems like most modern games simulate a surround-ish sound stage with the stereo setting. Turning on surround adds a ton of reverb and makes music sound a bit off, so I only turn it on when I'm trying to do something semi-competitive.Cons: The quality of the finish on the plastic parts is far below what it used to be. I own a much older pair of astro a40's (a discontinued set which came with a "wireless" mixamp) and the finish on the old pair has shown minimal wear, while these, not even a year old, have a severely chipped finish. Whatever paint they used on the plastic was not properly bonded meaning they probably did not use a proper primer when applying. These look very ugly now compared to my old set which have absolutely no chipping paint whatsoever.

I recently purchased the Astro A40 TR headset, and I have to say, it has exceeded my expectations in every way. This headset is a true gaming masterpiece.First and foremost, the audio quality is exceptional. The sound is incredibly clear, with rich bass and crisp highs that immerse you in your games and make every detail come to life. Updating the headset will break them and make then unusable! Thousands of people are out a lot of money, there’s even talk of a class action law-suit because they won’t fix the problem with there software and update bugs.
