This is a gorgeous and fast laptop, but I encountered a few shortcomings with regards to the AMD Integrated Graphics chip coming into conflict with the nVidia GPU. This laptop could play Cyberpunk 2077 cranked up to Ultra with all of the ray tracing turned on, but there was no way to load Doom Eternal. It was as if this laptop was designed to do just one thing well... play Cyberpunk 2077. All bets are off with getting other games to load or work. The preferences set in the nVidia Experience app seem to be ignored by the software controlling the Graphics switching. I went through a lot of driver installs and reinstalls in the hopes of resolving this conundrum. After a couple of days of trying to troubleshoot graphics anomalies, I finally returned this laptop to the store.

So, I originally wanted the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo but after weeks of it being on backorder everywhere, I decided to settle on the Strix Scar for an upcoming trip. I watched a few reviews on this product and others from MSI, Auros, Razer, and others. I choose this over others for three main reasons: ryzen 9 series chip, qhd 165 Hz screen and upgradability. To say the least, this product does not disappoint. It is fast, the screen is beautiful and I've already upgraded it to 64Gb of memory and an additional 1TB nvme drive. I will upgrade to wifi chip 6e when I feel it will benefit me. I will say that though this laptop is amazing, it isn't perfect but before I get to that I would like to say I was pleasantly surprised with how amazing the keyboard was. It is clickly, so if you want or need silence, this isn't the one for you but the travel and feel are perfect. So good that I got rid of my desktop keyboard in favor of one similar to this. Now to what doesn't make this laptop perfect and I know this opinion doesn't apply to everyone but it matters to me. First, it doesn't have a mux switch, not something that is a big deal to me but most laptops in 2021 have it so this one should as well. Also, there is no fingerprint reader. I'm sorry but if cellphones have been doing it for the past 5 years, every laptop should have it. It just makes it easier to log into your laptop and very secure. The other issue I have is it's a fingerprint magnet. My hands are usually dry but for some reason, this laptop picks up every little touch. And lastly, it doesn't have a webcam. Now for me, I prefer using my mirrorless camera to stream or for conference calls because of the quality, but every laptop in 2021 should have one and not some 720p piece of junk but for a 4k webcam. Cellphones have them and for this price, there is no reason why it shouldn't as well. Well, I hope this helped you if you are on the fence about this product. Again, it's a great laptop and in some cases better than the Zephyrus Duo I originally wanted, and in some cases, it isn't.

Fast! Love the speed, and the configuration is nice. NVMe speeds are average, the 3080 is underpowered which makes thermals great and provides 3070/3060ti like desktop graphics. Battery life is fantastic! The RGB Leds are nice but could have been more though out on the bottom, I really do like the estetics of the Leds below the screen though. And the translucent is a very nice touch though it doesnt show much. The few disappointing things are:-I have a dead pixel smack dab in the middle of the screen and I can RMA but its a hassle.-The bottom part of the laptop has a plastic like quality which is dissapointing at this price point- I like the new key design it feels nice, a little different but good. Everything works fine, except Chromecast streaming. I called Google, and after a good amount of time trying to fix the issue they said it was a hardware issue and to call Asus. I called Asus and after a minute or two of looking they said it was a software issue and to call Google. It was something to do with the laptop. My old laptop can still connect to Chromecast just fine and it was a fresh install over here but the sound kept failing to transfer. Issue was never resolved after hours on the phone. $3,000 laptop cannot stream! Also, the extended touchpad is just underneath my hand and occasionally causes it to move while typing.

Seriously, how the heck did they pull this off with this small landscape of breathing-pockets on the bottom panel? (Mind = Blown)Something else I wanted to point out, this laptop's graphics card rivals my Desktop's GTX 1080 ti and THAT is saying somethin for a laptop GPU.The only way to get a more powerful "laptop" is via the one's that use desktop hardware (and those run in the $4k-$6k range) and from what I could see those so called "better" one's require TWO POWER BRICKS to power the laptop (facepalm), so unless you plan on going NUTS (which voids the whole point of wanting a light weight mobile PC), you're not going to do better than this laptop here, not really... trust me, I've spent 700+ hours looking, you just won't do better for a 15 inch 5lb laptop, not today at least. There's a few things you can do to safely push the TGP to 155w (I won't mention what it involves) but the amount of gain you achieve isn't really worth the risks for the wattage increase, BUT that's my opinion, I know there's some gamers out there that don't care about voiding their warranty, lol, but if you have any sanity in you, please, just leave the bios and TGP where it is, you'll still get superior performance. It's a powerful machine for a laptop, really!Screen/Visuals are superb and the gaming experience is pronominal. If you're a high-end gamer or do any heavy video rendering, I would suggest to not settle for anything less than 32 gigs of ram and don't get for the 8GB video card version of the RTX 3080. You'll thank yourself, the difference IS noticeable for those kind of applications.I love the mechanical keyboard, they're clearly Cherry MX switches with the audible click and tactile bump, very satisfying feel and sound. RGB colors are fine. Metal frame solid. Beautiful machine. I'm very happy with my purchase. Thank you Asus peeps for the amazing job you did with this machine. I rarely recommend a laptop for high-end gaming, but with the hardware and cooling performance this thing has it gets my nitpicky psycho speed-runner thumbs up!
Although I am satisfied with the product design and aesthetics of the product, many issues accrued while using. The screen would constantly turn white after closing a game and weird, squeaky noise would come out from the computer while launching a game. The computer’s integrated graphic also stop working and shows error during uses and have to restart the computer. Unsure if it driver issue or hardware, but would defiantly not recommend it for such high price point.
During the unboxing of this laptop, it becomes clear that Asus really cares about you. The packaging is sleek, there are guides to help make setting up and updating your new laptop a breeze, and support is always there when you need help. This laptop comes with an opti-mechanical keyboard, and at first I found clicking to be odd, since I've used an old chiclet keyboard for 7 years prior. However, the keyboard is easy to get used to and I personally love it. It is noteworthy that the clicking is loud, which can disrupt things during calls or meetings. Another great feature is the RGBs, in dark environments it creates an amazing aura effect on the computer, and can be controlled to either shine your personality while gaming or dimmed for Netflix. The speakers are also phenomenal, I feel that they are one of the best laptop speakers that I have ever heard and work great if you don't have a headset with you. The screen is a whole review on its own, but to keep it short, you can't find better anywhere else. Mine had NO dark or light spots, and the coloring is beautiful. One thing to note though is it isn't very bright if you are using it outdoors, but it is not much of a problem. In many reviews, people say that the lack of a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus will negatively impact the performance of the laptop. However, I feel that the raw performance coming from the powerful Ryzen CPU and beefy RTX 3080 negates the effects of regular Optimus. If you purchased the 165Hz version of this laptop (like me), you will have no trouble reaching this number on any FPS game. I play a lot of Rainbow Six Siege, CSGO, and Overwatch, and I can easily hit 165+ fps on max graphic settings for each of these games. In terms of thermals, I manually set the fans to 90%-100% while I game, and this roughly translates to an average of mid 80 degrees Celsius on both the CPU and GPU (will vary depending on the game).Moving onto the negative side, the plastic on the keyboard side became permanently discolored on the first day and smudges accumulate very quickly. The Keystone II is also very gimmicky, as it is not held on tightly and will come loose with one accidental swipe. Also, this laptop does not come with a camera. Given we are in a pandemic era (at the time of writing), a camera almost seems like a must. However there are alternatives, such as using a mobile phone or buying a cheap external camera. Finally, I think that this computer is a bit pricey but makes up for it with the premium features and performance. If budget is an issue, I would recommend the regular Strix G15 over this Scar 15. All-in-all, this laptop is personally my favorite and I definitely recommend anyone to get their hands on one if they can.
Who is this laptop for? I did write a review earlier but it was done on my phone with little thought. This laptop if for someone with limitations, such as mobility, coupled with heat or power concerns. No it does not have a muc switch, but to be honest if you are not a reviewer, I'm not sure the extra 5-10 fps should even be a issue. You can control the fans, I just wish it was a little easier. you can also install a extra m.2 ssd (I used a 2 tb Samsung). The qhd screen looks really good, and you can connect to the dedicated graphics card by a type c connecter. I would reccomend this laptop to anyone that feels like they need something top of the line without any real compromises. I bought this one here cause I wanted a more future proofed laptop, I could have saved $500 or more just by dropping to the 8gb vram version like most of the 3080 laptops out there but with modern consoles having at least 12gb I know that's going to be a limiting factor very soon. 8gb VRAM is already becoming a limiting factor in some games for my 1080 in my main system. Speaking of my 1080, if you wanted to gauge performance the 3080 in this is about 30% to 35% more powerful it seems which was a little disappointing at first but for a laptop that's still pretty amazing and compared to the lower wattage and lower vram models of the laptop 3080 ... MoreI would reccomend this laptop to anyone that feels like they need something top of the line without any real compromises. I had this laptop less than a year and had to request an RMA on it. I've gotten MSI products in the past because they were cheap and the only thing in my budget. I finally saved up to get a high end ASUS and it has died more often in a few months than my MSI did in over 6 Years. I got so many different blue screens from "updating" drivers when Asus or Windows recommended it. I got ntvos.exe errors, The built-in AMD graphics software stopped recognizing its own drivers and refused to open until I completely reinstalled the drivers. Unfortunately those drivers didn't match with what Windows thought were the most recent drivers so Windows would quietly reinstall the other drivers causing an endless cycle where the AMD Radeon software just never worked.Speaking of ... MoreI had this laptop less than a year and had to request an RMA on it. The HDMI ONLY goes to the Built-in graphics card. You can only use the 3080 by plugging into the USB-C. That means Most VR headsets are NOT compatible with this laptop. I have no idea where they got the idea this laptop is VR Ready like they claim in all the descriptions. I tried for several months, emailing back and forth with some very kind engineers at Oculus to get my headset to work. It would only connect to the HDMI port and because that only uses the built-in card I had less than 1GB of VRAM for the headset... so it ran at about 1 frame per minute. The Headset could never recognize the 3080 card even with a USB-C adapter.Recently I had to send it in under an RMA because Asus themselves released a firmware update that didn't install properly, essentially bricking the laptop for several days until it magically fixed itself one day. Then after a while of using it the laptop shut itself down again and wouldn't boot like before. I have no idea what they did in their updates to make it WORSE. After installing I let the laptop sit for over 24 hours to make sure it installed the firmware properly, but the screen just went black after installing and did nothing for those 24 hours. This is the most expensive computer I have ever purchased and I've had so many more problems with it than any other computer. I originally got it for the high end CPU and GPU to help with Rendering in Blender. But the actual rendering power honestly wasn't much better than the 2060 in my desktop. It plays games pretty well but boy do those fans run loud at the slightest bit of effort from the CPU. I honestly feel like I could have gotten another laptop at half the price that would have performed as well as this one.
