The ASUS PA32UCRK 4K HDR Monitor provides the capabilities to create HDR /HDR-10 video material for personal playback as well as client requests. ASUS provides a unique color calibration app and a copy of the i1Display Pro PLUS colorimeter, which integrates with the app and the monitor. However, current how to make that integration is not well documented in the company's product user manual nor mentioned in the how to videos. There are 2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type C ports on the back of the monitor (see attached picture). Only one of the ports can be used by the colorimeter - but it is not mentioned in the product manual or video. The color gamut is impressive (stunning, evern) and the screen uniformity is excellent. The downside is that the display has a very poor viewing angle for an IPS display (really looks more like a VA display), so sitting in front of the monitor you see very pronounced vignetting on a flat field unless you are at least 3 ft. from the display. Color was my first priorty, so I will keep the monitor, but am not impressed at all by the viewing angle.
I'm not a professional photographer or graphic artist but I dabble in both fields as an advanced amateur. I have paired this monitor with a Mac Studio, 32GB RAM, 10 Core CPU, 24 Core GPU computer. I couldn't be happier with both the computer and the monitor. Up until this setup I was using the Retina 27 iMac. This setup blows that away. I read a lot about scaling issues with 32 monitors paired with Macs as well as issues with less than crisp type. I have had no issues with either of those with this monitor. I've tried all the resolution settings that the Mac Studio offers me and several of the scaling options worked well for me. The default setting of 3840X2160 resulted in icons and type being too small for my taste. I ultimately settled on 3200X1800. Even a 0.1 pt. pencil line in my graphics program (Affinity Designer) when is crisp and clear at 100% as well as 3,000%. I read another reviewers problem with traveling bloom as the mouse moves across a gray or white background. I have no problems with that issue. No traveling bloom on my system. I do notice a very slight change in a white background when I move my head back and forth across the screen as the other reviewer noted. It does not bother me. I rarely move my head in that way when using the monitor so I don't consider it an issue. You may. The only real issue I have, and this seems to be a common problem when pairing anything other than an Apple monitor with an Apple computer, is the lag time when waking up the monitor and/or computer from sleep. I was used to an immediate wakeup with the iMac. This system takes at least 5 seconds to wake up. However, it's not something that would keep me from buying this monitor since I think I would have the same problem with any other external monitor that was not an Apple product. In summary, I think this is great monitor. I would buy it again and would recommend it to my family and friends.
This is a great monitor for photo editing and a bargain compared to comparable monitors. The colors are great, it's a perfect size, and it's well designed. The joy stick to move around the monitor menus is particularly clever. I only have 2 minor complaints. First, the quick setup guide that comes with the monitor is absolutely worthless. Download the manual from the ASUS website before you unpack the box. Second, while the i1 Display Pro profiler is excellent it has only generic instructions on its use. With ASUS written all over the box I expected a detailed description on how to use it with this ASUS monitor. However, if you've ever used a similar device it's not hard to figure out. Overall I couldn't be happier with the purchase.
As expected, a factory-calibrated monitor of this caliber delivers. I feel I made an excellent choice, excellent colors and pitch definition
So I had reservations about buying into the micro-LED backlit tech and unfortunately I should have stuck with my hunches. The number of zones or individual LEDs in this monitor is not nearly enough to be practically useful. So much so that ANY company should not be marketing this tech at all unless they state for uses of viewing video alone. The traveling bloom when you move your mouse pointer along a grey area is absolutely unacceptable. Unless you are just using this monitor for video alone, you will indeed find yourself turning OFF local diming, period! It's that bad. Fortunately you can turn that off! LOL! So turning it off just makes all the LEDs on the back stay on. And at first I figured this would be much better than using an edge-lit technology monitor. So turning it off just makes all the LEDs on the back stay on. And at first I figured this would be much better than using an edge-lit technology monitor. And it probably is, EXCEPT this monitor also uses (Samsung's?) Quantum Dot technology instead of say, an LG-based panel. I'll put it this way, if you do nothing but dark-mode viewing on your computer, then things look great. But if you view ANY content with a white background, like an email, spreadsheet, etc. it looks VERY uncomfortable to the eyes. I'm not sure exactly why but it has got to be a combination of the Quantum dot tech and perhaps also a PWM-based backlight control. There are two aspects that make looking at white backgrounds so uncomfortable. First, unlike an LG panel for example, the light you see seems to shift with just the slightest movement of your head (change of viewing angle), which I find surprising for IPS! Secondly, it sure seems like the LED backlights are PWM controlled because it just feels like the white light is not constant if that makes sense. Sort of like it is vibrating instead of steady. I am not one that gets headaches from PWM like some people say they are, but it is NOT pleasant to look at white backgrounds on this monitor at all.For the unit I got (I wonder if I was sent a previously returned unit?) I found it VERY hard to believe this monitor is so color accurate from the factory as ASUS claims. This is because I had to go into the settings and adjust the green channel down from 50 to 45 to remove a green cast from BLACK backgounds. Weird. I found Adobe RGB or P3 to be the best color modes for me. But still had to adjust the green channel down. I have not done a calibration yet with the included tool.In regards to the physical design of this monitor, it is very nice. Much nicer than the ProArt PA329C that I recommend you get instead of this unfortunately. The bezels are much nicer on this monitor and overall it just looks more sleek. Probably why I took a chance on this thing. So again, video looks absolutely amazing with local diming on, and also with it off. Dark content looks fabulous. Colors (once you adjust the green?) look good. But I cannot recommend this expensive tech to anyone because of how terrible white background are to look at. Bummer! I HATE to return things both for the hassle and also I often wonder if online retailers will then sell it again as new, like I wonder if mine is. But I may just return this thing and that would be a first in my lifetime.I had high hopes. White backgrounds are that horrible unfortunately, and local diming should not be used unless marketed for video only.
