I had the pleasure of reviewing the new ASUS G18.I94080 and boy was I excited to get started with this beast of a laptop! Well, that isn't entirely true... the only compromise here is the laptop is held together by a plastic body vs a fully metal one, however, that is the only corner cut on this machine, and frankly, the plastic is of high quality, the laptop feels premium, and I'll take the cost saving here for something that essentially doesn't matter at the end of the day.This laptop destroyed any game I threw at it, while owning benchmarks for breakfast. Let me break it down:Benchmarks:3D Mark TimeSpy (default settings) 17191Heaven 6152Games:Halo Infinite - Maximum Settings - DLSS off - averages 140FPS using built in displayRed Dead Redemption 2 - Maximum Settings - DLSS off - averaged 90 FPSCall of Duty Modern Warfare 2 - Maximum Settings - DLSS off - Averaged 200FPSCounter-Strike Go - Maximum Settings - DLSS off - Averages the maximum 240FPSStreet Fighter 6 - Maximum Settings - DLSS off - Averaged 180 FPSFan noise was very minimal for a laptop of this power. Fan noise was apparent if not wearing a headset, but it was a mild woosh of moving air vs annoying mini fans. I heard absolutely no coil wine what so ever, which is something this model laptop has been known to exhibit in the past. I had absolutely, positively, no coil noise of any kind. The system maintained rock solid stability, never crashed, overheated, or struggled even slightly during the nearly 2 weeks I ran this thing hard.One this to note, there were many updates, including firmware I ran upon initial setup. I allowed Armoury Crate to download and apply everything, as well as ran Windows updates until completed. I know Armoury Crate is a point of contention in the gaming community, but I've barely had an issue with it and I've owned MANY ASUS ROG products to date. It typically boils down to firmware being up to date, and proper drivers being installed.The RGB lighting effects are nice, the ASUS Aura Creator aids in customizing these to literally, anything you can imagine up.The build in display is GORGEOUS. It is spot on 99.9% RGB and DCI-P3 accurate. My model had NO stage lighting effect, edge bleed, or ghosting. Colors were phenomenally saturated, yet accurate, blacks were VERY even and hit around an 8% grey is brightness turned down slightly, nothing compared to OLED, however, for IPS, this is a brilliant display. I am also a videophile who expects perfection from their displays. For a "budget" laptop, this display is fantastic. The 240Hz refresh rate, when used to it's maximum abilities (ie: games like CS:GO) there was no noticeable blur or image ghosting.I round the RTX4080 switched over from the built in Intel chip every single time without fail.Keyboard is nice and responsive as well, touch pad equally responsive.All in all, this is an outstanding laptop that will outperform most people's full desktop. For the MSRP of $2500 you cannot go wrong. If you happen to get a model that matched my experience, you will be head over heels for this thing. Thank you ASUS for the experience, and thank you for making a solid performing laptop, that checks every necessary box, and leave out the stuff that doesn't matter, to keep a well balance price to performing laptop.

It goes without saying, this is hands down one of the best gaming laptops on the market for 2023. From the huge 18 inch beautiful display, to the sheer performance and very desirable new 40 series gpus, the Asus ROG Strix is not messing around.Out of the box you'll instantly feel it's presence from the sleek matte color scheme, mine being the eclipse gray offering, and ROG's signature watermark. Sadly with more power comes even bigger power bricks to run said machines, so portability is not the easiest, especially since battery life is questionable. This thing sucks up battery pretty quickly and that's without having turbo mode on. I was able to get just under 3 hours play time on performance mode (default) with ultra settings on apex legends. Now noise on the other hand, yes you can expect a noisy device but it's not uncommon when you consider the power trade off. Fans do get loud at times but using a headset or higher volume levels should negate most of it.This is without a doubt the best laptop I've ever owned and I couldn't happier. If you're talking in terms of value. The ROG Strix is exceptionally a good buy. Asus has had it's hiccups but, the hit a homerun this time.

What a SSD does is, anything you download get stored here, movies, pictures, games etc etc… the more storage you have the more you can download, 1TB is a lot, you can download big games, hours, and hours of video, and or thousands of pictures.Extras: There are a lot of other features here, a front facing camera, headphone audio Jack, all the newest connections, one USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, one Thunderbolt 4, one HDMI 2.1 port, and one microSD card reader. I was super hyped for this laptop.The performance of the laptop lives up to that hype, getting about 60 fps on Cyberpunk 2077 without frame generation with frame generation about 85ish (at max settings including the Psycho settings). I thought it was my headphones but I took them off and heard it, it was not coil whine and I have no idea what it was, it wasn’t consistent and didn’t stay long, this was during idle/web browsing.Temperatures are pretty nice CPU under load around 80 degrees Celsius and GPU under load was around 70-72ish degrees Celsius.Other notes about frame generation to those new to the 4000 series cards, this setting has given me some input lag, it’s there but not terrible or unplayable by any means, more useful than bad.Very happy about the MUX switch for the computer which amps up the systems performance. (Have to select ultimate GPU mode in Armory Crate software)I’ve had the laptop for a day as of writing this and was purchased on March 2nd.

The thermal is well controlled when you manually increase the fan speed (The presets in Armoury Crate maintain the CPU and GPU temperature merely below the thermal limit, for the purpose of reduce fan noise). The QHD panel looks fantastic since it is factory calibrated, also with its 240Hz refresh rate, which feels smooth in every game that can utilize such high refresh rate. HOWEVER, it is just impossible to avoid LED backlight leak on all gaming laptop, this one also has this issue mostly around the corners and sides, (I guess that’s just a thing people have to accomodate. IN ADDITION, just like people’s complain on the internet, the electric noise on this model is also inevitable, including other strix models as well. The electric noise is super annoying when the laptop is at idle, and it will make even more noticible sound when you are moving your cursor (basically if you add some loads to the cpu and gpu, the electric noise will come up). Even though Asus claim it is a normal phenomenon on all high-performance gaming laptop, I say give it a try yourself and see whether you can accept it or not. LAST but NOT LEAST, I don’t know if it is a driver issue or hardware problem, when you open certain game or softwares while using direct GPU output instead of hybrid mode (for me it is Rainbow Six Siege running on Vulkan), there will be screen blinking on the right side of the panel, and then the video driver will crash followed by a black screen, and you will have to restart the system to restore it. I hope it is a issue that can be fixed by Nvidia video driver or Bios updates, otherwise Asus really has to come up with a solution to improve their quality control. In summary, the overall performance is great, but there are just too much small problems that adds up to challenge customer’s patience when you spend over 2.5k on a gaming laptop.

Another thing to note relating to its size is the fact that a full numeric keypad is included as well which I really like. On very rare occasions, I need a laptop for work and for me, a full numeric keypad is a must-have as well as a decent-sized screen. This ASUS laptop fulfills both of those requirements for me while also providing an exceptionally smooth experience regardless of whether I am using the laptop for gaming or for work.Speaking of gaming, one of the things that goes hand in hand with gaming when it comes to laptops is the need for a good cooling system. The ROG Intelligent Cooling system is very intuitive and does a great job. Sure, it can get pretty loud at times, but the times when it is the loudest which is while gaming, most people would be using a gaming headset anyways in which case you don’t even really notice the sound. I have really enjoyed my gaming experiences on this laptop so far and do not have any complaints.The other feature that I really love about this laptop is the fact that it not only comes with a 1TB SSD installed, but that it also has space to add an additional M.2 SSD, if needed. With the size of games continuing to grow, it is important to have enough storage space and I really like the fact that this laptop didn’t include anything less than 1TB and that it also has room to expand further.Overall, the ASUS – ROG Strix 18” 240Hz Gaming Laptop is a great gaming laptop with some very high-end components and features and I highly recommend it!

By far, with some of it's most recent competition coming out with similar specd out machines, I would lean more towards this gaming laptop. Let me tell you why.. For an 18 inch gaming laptop it is not terribly heavy. The display is beautiful an although I lean towards more brighter panels, this suffices for gamers. The keyboard layout is great even with the included macro buttons and numpad, it feels natural to type on. I do question why there are two fan profile buttons that do the same thing! The board itself has very little flex when pressed hard on it which is great. When I want to keep the fans quiet, doing some casual PC stuff, I simply set the profile to match that standard quite fan mode which keeps the CPU fan at around 1700rpms with the gpu and system fan at 1900rpms (GPU has been set to Ultimate). This means, Armoury crate has the fan acoustics clocked in at around 22dBA. With gaming, expect to wear your headphones because depending on your usage, the fans will go full blast to 36+dBA.For the price, this is a good gaming laptop that you can lug around without being too "gamer bro". It checks all the boxes for gaming and then some.

It's definitely bad enough that if you intend to use this for darker horror games or design work I'd wait for something else unless you intend to use it exclusively with external displays.The battery life is terrible but it's irrelevant, the hardware in it needs wall power to function anywhere close to its potential in any laptop.If you plan to mainly play bright, vibrant games the it's the perfect machine. If you're spending this much expecting perfect uniformity and accuracy in the screen, sorry this one's eaten up too much of the budget on the insane gpu/cpu and cooling system and you'll need to spend more elsewhere to get the perfect display too.

It may be that the heat from the screen is alleviating the pressure. I got another one at the same time to compare side by side and both had the glow issue, this is probably due to too much pressure on the display during assembly. Performance is just Epic, I get ~32,000 cinebench score multi core and ~2000 single core, timespy is a solid 18,600. You can undervolt after updating to bios 307, I have mine set to 50mw. However it does have some PROBLEMS. Advanced optimus is jank, sometimes it will not switch to dgpu mode when gaming, and when it does it takes a while and you are stuck with a black screen. When you change to dgpu mode only the laptop will randomly lose the ability to change brightness and you have to switch it to hybrid mode to fix it. This is a pain and enough for me to want to return it. Also DSR FACTORS are missing from the nvidia control panel, not sure if this is due to nvidia drivers or the laptop itself. Fresh install did not fix it. There are also alot of random freezes that require you to hold down the power button to restart the laptop. As far as UPGRADEABILITY goes, I tried 64GB of Samsung 2R8 DDR5 and it did not work, I upgrade to Crucial 32GB DDR5 and that did work fine. Just be aware that the first bootup with new ram might take a bit longer than usual, don’t be scared if you see a black screen for 2-5 minutes. This is by no means “cheap”, but compared to Alienware, Razer, and MSI’s $3500 4080 laptops this is more affordable. However random lock ups, buggy advanced optimus, terrible backlight bleed make this a questionable purchase at best.
