Asustor AS5202T Nimbustor 2 2-Bay Diskless NAS
The Nimbustor 2 utilizes the Intel Gemini Lake Celeron J4005 dual core CPU and is 30% faster than Apollo lake. The Celeron J4005 also doubles the on-chip cache to 4MB, making the Nimbustor 2 one of fastest NAS devices ever. The Nimbustor 2 comes with two Gigabytes of DDR4 RAM and can be upgraded up to 8GB. DDR4 RAM provides up to 30% greater performance than DDR3 while also lowering energy requirements by 40%. The Nimbustor 2 provides two 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet ports. Enable up to 150% faster performance than Gigabit Ethernet with compatible hardware and up to 5 Gbps using Link Aggregation. The AS52 series devices produce only 19 decibels of noise during system standby, equivalent to the almost inaudible sound of a pin drop. During system operation, only 32 decibels of noise is produced, equivalent to the hushed tones of a quiet library, allowing the AS52/53 series devices to seamlessly and comfortably integrate into any living environment. ASUSTOR NAS products are designed and developed around ecologically friendly concepts. When in use, devices consume far less power than the average computer or server. Furthermore, ASUSTOR advanced power control features allow you to more efficiently manage your NAS device and hard drives. This lowers your electric bill and prolongs the lifespan of your hard drives all at the same time. While in disk hibernation, the AS5202T consumes only 10.5 W of power. Under normal operating conditions it still only consumes 17 W of power.

I spent weeks and weeks weighing up QNAP vs Synology NAS to replace an ailing Netgear ReadyNAS...so long that the ReadyNAS and one of its hard drives died before I could make a decision. Fortunately the data retrieval company discovered that my USB backup was only missing a couple of files, so I didn’t have to pay £1200 to get my data back.As a last look on NASCompares I saw this Asustor, and I’m so glad I did. I doubt I’ll use the full speed of the 2x2.5Gb Ethernet ports, or tie them with a suitable router/switch, but the last NAS lasted 10 years, so maybe...It is very, very quiet. The fan only needs to spin at 750rpm for the unit to keep cool in my cupboard, despite having downloaded so much data continuously over 8 hours or more!Recommended.

So far so good. Found it harder to get sharing working than previous device... Still to attend the multiple training courses.... OMG... But at least there is online training. 👍.Photo app is good backing up my phone just happens and it groups automatically but location... Really smart.Haven't used the test yet but remain positive that they will also be good.

I love this NAS. It comes with heaps of great software for backing up and streaming and works well with our Android phones for backing up and sharing. It also includes advanced software which I don't need but it's there if you want it. (You download it from Asustor's website so it doesn't take up space if you don't want it.) It is easy to use as long as you don't mind reading a few instructions. The manufacturer includes high quality tutorials on its website and there are lots of forums with additional tips. I used both official and unofficial resources to tweak my security settings. I also upgraded the RAM which was easy. I love that the Asustor AS5202T is not proprietary unlike some other home user/small office NASes. I popped a couple of Seagate NAS drives in and it works great. Nice and fast.
Pros: It was easy to install and set up. It's small and quiet.Cons: It's slow compared to the Nimbustor 4 as the CPU is comparatively feeble. Okay, two HDDs in RAID1 can't be as fast as four in RAID10 but I can see it slowing down more than I'd expect. Fortunately this is my backup NAS so I can live with it but if I needed something faster I'd go for a Lockerstor 2 instead.
The setup for this Nas was not straightforward. It took me about an hour and a half to figure out how to initialize my hard drive due to what appears to be errors in the software (what the user guide directed you to do you didn’t work). Thank God I have a tech background. My friend who got a Synology said he was up and running in 5 minutes. The Plex server only works for iOS devices (this is Plex’s problem) but Emby works For Apple TV. Only had it for a week in the server has hung once Doing a file transfer and I had to do a hard reset. When it works it’s great, but I’m not yet sold.
Great little NAS. Very easy to setup and start using. There's a wizard for everything. Very similar to QNAPs in terms of appearance and functions. I bought 2 x 2TB HDD and have RAID1 configured, I wish I had gone for the 4 bay and had 4 x 4TB in RAID10 instead. There's a tonne of apps available via the app store. It's great!
This thing does work with linux although I had to run the windows app to figure out how to connect to the NAS. The included quick start only showed me how to hook up the instrument and the user guide was windows/mac centered. The lessons learned were: 1) initially the way to connect to this device is: [ip address]:8000 2) If you do not use blank dis driven when they are expected, the NAS will not work as expected 3) the web interface on the NAS seems to be complete. If I did not include port 8000 in the ip address, I did not get a response from the NAS. Just providing some helpful info to those in the Linux world.
I bought noisy drives and they make noise. The enclosure itself is quiet. The Android music apps seems to crash from time to time. Still checking out the many features and applications that come with this. Definitely has NAS needs covered well. Still figuring out how to best use all the features that can really be useful beyond in home storage.
The NAS seems to be a pretty flexible unit. I like the app ecosystem, and the fact that it just runs docker containers on x86 implies I could probably just run whatever I wanted to if I needed. I installed home assistant to free up another SBC I was running, and it seems to run fine with it. Right now I have a pair of 4tb wd red plus in raid 1, and setup was painless. It had me update firmware on first boot, which was about 5 minutes. After that it offered a guided tour, which you could skip, and that was it. Once it was through it started synching the drives, and I was able to set up some samba shares while it finished. Had 3 computers using it as a backup target within an hour. (Why did MS decide to hide local backup options away? I don't want to use ... MoreThe NAS seems to be a pretty flexible unit.
