Even JL stock was limited but the AT-LPW 40 was available.Upon unpacking, it became clear that this turntable is a very pleasing design. The lack of black plastic and its clean minimal lines and solid wooden appearance makes it suitable to be placed in any living room setting. It was placed on an oak cabinet and it blended in perfectly.Setting the deck up was reasonable straightforward although I am very familiar with this process. I would suggest that a stylus balance is to hand in order to setup the stylus tracking weight accurately. I was not happy with the way AT suggested this should be done without the use of such a device. Upon connecting the turntable to my audio system (I did not use the inbuilt phono amp but used an external ART Phono Plus preamplifier) I was immediately impressed how quite the deck was a vinyl LP sitting on the turntable arm resting on the disk but not spinning. There was no hum, no hiss when the volume was turned to max. When the vinyl disc was played which had unmodulated groves, there was no rumble. A far cry from my old deck. The AT -VM95E cartridge is already well received in the audio hifi arena and it is well suited for this turntable / arm setup. It tracked the test records without issue and was stable even when tracking highly modulated pressings. The first LP to spin on the AT-LPW40WN was the Simon and Garfunkel Bridge over Trouble Water. Track 1 of this LP is an excellent test track as the dynamic range of this track is large. At about three and half minutes into the track the sound level which up until that point were restrained builds up dramatically and delivers a powerful base string passage supported by a base drum that can almost be felt. The AT-LPW40WN rendered this track perfectly and then coped with a rise in overall volume. It was easy to pick out the lyrics "Sail on silver girl sail on by" while still feeling the accoupling music score, a task that would be difficult for most sub £300 turntables.A beautiful looking turntable which produces a great sound. Highly recommended

The unit is well made, look and feel are first rate. The wood effect may not be for everyone but this in no way looks a cheap compromise and really adds to the quality of the unit. Ensure you watch YouTube to balance the arm, the video from Audiotechnica is easy to follow. One tip, connect the supplied earth cable to your hifi unit (if you don't have a connection point don't worry, I managed to attach to the side of a Denon unit). Using the earth cable removes any annoying feedback and static, which you get from cheaper turntables. Sound quality is fantastic, we immediately heard instruments on track's not previously picked out on our original turntable. Love the fact that we can also change the head for more advanced sound later down the line. If you are on a Vinyl ... MoreThe unit is well made, look and feel are first rate. We bought this Audio Technica turntable and Steljes speakers for our daughter and they are both brilliant - look great and superb sound quality. Also great service from Dale at Rciher Sounds - thank you!

Mediocre turntable, ground hum
27 June 2019

I bought this turntable thinking it would be a good purchase given the brand reputation. Build is solid, tonearm is fine, but it has a ground hum that doesn't go away. I've tried several things to fix this. I've contacted customer support but they are virtually non existent. They haven't replied to my email from 2 weeks ago.

I’ve always shopped at RS for as long as I can remember. However I forgot I had some Celestion speakers in my loft from 1979. So I thought, it’s well overdue that I bought a new turntable and dusted off my old vinyl and Celestions. As always, RS Liverpool delivered a remarkable service. Chris not only advised me on my old Celestions (as I was thinking of just buying new) but also talked me through the new Audio Technica turntable I had my eye on. Absolutely sterling knowledge and service. Chris was nothing short of perfect customer service and ensured my new speaker cables were also trimmed and ready to go. Everything turned up as promised and the turntable is as beautiful looking as it sounds. My Celestions work amazingly and the cables are perfect. It’s this sort of professionalism that will make me buy again and again from Richer Sounds - and also recommend them to friends and family.

Two reasons.....
18 April 2023

This is my first new turntable. Previous ones have been rescued from skips, inherited or 2nd hand. I bought this for two two reasons, looks and price. The Walnut finish matches my Leak amp and the price was within my budget.I managed to assemble it and get it working in about 10 minutes with no issues.Sound quality is perfect for me. I'm no audiophile, I just enjoy my vinyl so I won't bang on about how it sounds.Very impressed by Richer Sounds though. 6 years warranty and the best price I could find. Staff friendly and helpful.Next on my shopping list.......some new speakers......Walnut of course.

This was so easy to set up and play through my new Denon system , it replaced an 40 year old technics deck that has eventually given up.Not only sounds great but the deck looks great too. So good to be able to listen to the softer sounds of vynl again.

nice but one big flaw
9 September 2022

The cartridge carrier (headshell) is not parallel to the platter/vinyl surface and it's not something a user can cause or adjust according to tech support, it's that way out of the box. The amount is quite large and quickly visible and obvious. It can affect the L-R balance and quality on playback.
