I have used Audio Technica cartridges for many years and this latest version is just as spectacular. After much research and reading/listening to reviews both in print and on-line, the cartridge lived up to all its ratings and expectations. Sound quality is extremely good for casual listening and set-up was very easy. I would highly recommend this moving coil nude stylus cartridge to anyone wishing to upgrade their current stylus without spending a boatload of money. Well worth the cost.

Fitted to a SME 3009 arm on a Garrard 401, to replace a Goldring 1012 which I didn't think was quite right for the arm. The VM95ML was chosen as it has quite a following, is competitively priced (the entire cart costs less than a replacement stylus for the Goldring even though both use the same stylus profile) and can be upgraded with a stylus change when the needle wears out.The results are impressive, there's very little surface noise compared to the Goldring and the microlinear stylus picks up a lot of detail from the grooves. I have found it works best at the upper end of the recommended tracking force (2.2g).It also comes with mounting screws and a screwdriver, small details but very welcome.Highly recommended!

The quality of the sound in my Thorens turntable is the best it’s ever been. Even the oldest vinyl sounds wonderful. I’m hearing rich and beautiful sound exactly as it was created, noticing instruments I hadn’t even heard before.And as highly as I recommend this cartridge, I recommend all the good folks at B&H. It has a little more mass than some others, and seems like it would be quite rigid.My main curiosity was how the 0.6 conical VM95 would stack-up to the Shure 0.7 conical M44-G (the lighter tracking version of the M44-7). Tracked many many times on GE VRII Broadcast cartridges, which are not very compliant, and track around 4 grams, as well as a variety Stanton 500A's and Shure M44-7's. All of which are 0.7 mil. It was clear that this new 0.6 mil AT was finding some cleaner, less damaged vinyl to play for me.The over-all sound of the AT VM95c was somewhat more forward in the upper mid-range than the Shure. Not enough to be annoying, but still noticeable. I was tracking both at 2 grams, which is the upper end of the Shure, but the middle of the (narrow) recommended range for the VM95c.On fresh, clean, not abused vinyl, the Shure seemed to hold a slight advantage in trackablity, but this was slight. To make the comparison more fair, I increased the VTF on the VM95c to it's max. With the VM95c at 2.2 grams, the two seemed to track nearly identically on hotly mastered LP's and 45's. The suspension in the VM95c seems to have no problem running up at 2.2 grams. It shows no signs of collapsing into it's grip. No cueing damage was noted on styrene 45's btw at 2.2g.A very impressive cartridge for it's price!

I had a Shure M97xE, I thought it was a good cartridge but after installing the VM95ML/H what a difference. I played my Lincoln Mayorga album and the clarity in the base was so much better, There's a kick drum in the left channel that I never heard before. The horns in another section were awesome. Vocals have a new life! Channel separation and stereo imagery is so much better.Set up was really easy, I checked all the measurements and set the tracking to 2grams. Not sure how the AT audiophile cartridges can be better. I have used many cartridges over the years including moving coil designs, most of them employing an elliptical profile for the stylus, both nude and bonded. Many sounded great but with the exception of classical music and large orchestra compositions in particular. I always believed it to be the nature of the record itself with such complex grooves.I tried the VM95 as in introduction to the Microline profile and was almost blown away! Much of the distortion disappeared, the bass was noticeably deeper and more defined and the whole sound was less edgy including in the inner grooves. Surface noise was low or not there.This translates to more popular music of course, and female voices in particular. Also, I was a bit squeemish about installing the stylus into the original headshell. So I exchanged it for the Audio Technica AT-VM95ML/H with the headshell installed.
