Overall:I wanted this mic every since I first heard it at a music store in the 90's..just never bought one. It is an all rounder. I have other color mics but this one fairly uncolored. It has no personality. Imo its a refrence mic that eq well. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is starting out.I do recommend it as addition to a pro mic locker.

An excellent microphone with features unavailable in this price range until now.

Sound:I just bought this microphone a few days ago, and I have tested it playing solo violin, concert band, and vocal (spoken and sung). The microphone compares favorably with several very expensive (and well-known) mono microphones I have used in professional recording studios. This microphone records a sound very similar to live performance. I recorded throughout the four-octave range of my violin with great satisfaction. I also used it as a live microphone amplifying my violin and was very pleased with the result. The tone is very clear, with undetectable distortion in every type of music ranging from very loud to almost inaudible. I am anxious to continue using this microphone, exploring its seemingly unlimited possibilities.Features:This microphone includes a hard case, shock-mount, dust cover, and cable, all that is needed. Everything is attractive and utilitarian. I am somewhat dubious about the shock-mount, which seems barely up to the task of holding the microphone vertically but not in any other position. The microphone is rather heavy, making me uncomfortable when I need to place it on a boom and elevate it to a high position.Ease of Use:This microphone is very easy for an experienced person to use. The switches on it are self-explanatory and sturdy. They are also recessed, which makes it unlikely to accidentally change settings in normal handling conditions. It is also a forgiving microphone, allowing considerable latitude in placement without severely damaging the recorded performance.Quality:Having used this microphone for only a few days, my impression is that it is very well made, reliable, sturdy, and long-lasting. (I have already mentioned my doubts about the shock-mount.)Value:I carefully researched all available microphones in my price range, and I believe this to be the best value.Manufacturer Support:I have not had occasion to deal with company with any problems, so I am assuming that a "10" rating is appropriate. The Wow Factor:It has a professional appearance which does not attract attention. I lusted for it after trying it out.Overall:I own quite a few microphones, each desirable for certain purposes. There is nothing like this microphone, which means that I will probably keep it as long as I need professional recording gear.

It's a different animal of course but it still has it's place. Sometimes its the perfect choice and that's saying something considering the price difference of the mic's it "competes" with. What I really want to say is, at some point, years past the warranty period, the "rubber band" that holds the mic in its shock mount broke. It shouldn't have broken (thus the 3-star "Durability" rating above) but not a big deal. I contacted AT to buy a replacement and they couldn't get me the whole attachment assembly fast enough, never even asking how long I'd had the mic, much less if it was still in warranty. ... MoreFirst serious mic I ever bought and years and years later still holds its own with my other mic's including a great U47, an amazing M49 and an out-of-this-world ELAM 251. Extremely 3D
24 September 2024

I have a 1978 Neumann U87. I compared it with this microphone. The AT4050 surprisingly handles sibilance well while maintaining a clean and accurate capture. The U87 does the classic sibilance smearing while the AT4050 captures it accurately and gracefully. It doesn't have the low end body and punch of the vintage U87 but it has an extreme accurate and pleasant sound. It makes all of my vintage mics sound very colored, which can be certainly good, but when you want a 3D true to life representation, this is it. Pair it with a very clean preamp like the Cranborne Camden, and record through good converters, and you will be amazed. I am honestly in shock by how good this mic is. I wish I had this microphone earlier.

Fantastic set

When I was studying audio engineering 8 or 9 years ago, I was anxious to start putting what I was learning into practice. I was awarded a special grant designed to help technology students get the tech they were studying - in essence, I was told I must buy "toys" with the money! (Ouch, stop twisting my arm already!) I purchased a digital interface and 2 of this set. They looked like a good set to start out with, and the price was good. They turned out to be some of my most used mics. They have good overall sound for just about any sound source, nice range, and a SNR that rivals mics costing far more. The 2020 is great on vocals and other broad-spectrum instruments, as well as foley.Surprisingly, the place these have really performed well for me is on piano. 2 of this set is my go-to for baby grand piano: Put the 2021s in an X/Y near coincident pair covering the hammers inside, and the 2020s in the same configuration 12-16 feet outside the open lid, mix (with the appropriate delay on the 2021s) and WOW! I've impressed several professional pianists with the results. If you're looking for a good set of general-purpose, inexpensive mics, give these babys a try. You'll be glad you did!

How do I spell "smooth"? I spell it - AT 4047MP!

Having a home project studio on a budget, I scour magazine and on-line reviews thoroughly before plunking down my hard-earned coin on new gear purchases.I have never for an instant regretted the purchase of the 4047MP.With the multi-pattern capability of this mic, a pair was purchased for M/S recording, but single mic recordings have been a true pleasure with this mic as well. With the 4047MP, I've recorded vocals, flutes, fiddles, acoustic guitar, accordion and have used the pair as overheads for drums. What continually amazes me about this mic is it's ability to handle dynamics - all the while producing the silkiest high end. From very soft (with low mic noise) to very loud (with no distortion), this mic sounds wonderful! And the smooth top end requires no ... MoreHaving a home project studio on a budget, I scour magazine and on-line reviews thoroughly before plunking down my hard-earned coin on new gear purchases.I have never for an instant regretted the purchase of the 4047MP.With the multi-pattern capability of this mic, a pair was purchased for M/S recording, but single mic recordings have been a true pleasure with this mic as well. And the smooth top end requires no corrective EQ'ing like with other condenser mics.If you have other FET's in your collection, even the "very expensive" variety, then you owe it to yourself to listen to the 4047MP.If you don't have a quality FET in your mic locker yet, then the 4047MP is the one!

One of the best, most versatile microphones, at any price.
16 June 2021

The Audio Technica 4050 is a very quiet, versatile microphone. Sonically it can capture instruments and voice at near field, mid field and far field placement. The polar patterns are very useful and all work very well. This is a classic well made microphone.

Smoothest mic I've ever used
8 November 2013

Overall:I have used a bunch of microphones . Some people want extreme clarity . Some people want something that completely hides their voice with air and some effects. I personally like clear it's with a tidbit of air for that nice sweet smoothness. And this mic does exactly that . There is something special that this mic does to your sound . I think it's because of a decreased volume on the 1k . It just removed the harsh and painful sound that a loud voice would give. It's smooth - that's for sure ! I fully recommend this microphone after using all the ones I have in this price range .

Solid performance at a reasonable price
5 October 2021

This is a solid performance microphone that is a workhorse meaning it sounds good on just about any source. It is a medium size diaphragm Mic so it responds to transient sounds really well. I personally am not a fan of it on my own vocals but have used it on others (especially female voices) with great success. Overall it's definitely a Mic you should have in your collection.

The ultimate studio workhorse

I first began using the AT4050 back in 1997, and nearly 20 years later, it still has a prominent place in my mic locker, probably racking up more overall use than any other single microphone I have. Talk about reliability! Not only reliable, but it's a flexible mic as well - It has served me incredibly well on snare, drum overheads, room, cabs, vocals, acoustic guitars, and just about anything else you can think of. The 3 polar patterns, pad, and bass roll off add to its flexibility. It absolutely is the best all-around condenser mic that I have.Sometimes, being good at many things can translate to being GREAT at nothing, but this is NOT the case with the 4050. When choosing mics for specific clients/situations, the 4050 regularly wins out as the best sounding mic, even when compared to more expensive mics. This is great for dynamic vocals, unbelievably good when mic'ing the bottom of a snare, full and warm on acoustic guitars, and incredibly detailed as a drum overhead. The frequency response of this mic is not hyped - it instead captures sound with a very honest quality. At the same time, you can run it through a good mic preamp and add a little "air" with a good EQ and it will hold its own with many of the expensive tube mics on the market. If you are going into a session "blind" and can only take one mic with you, for me that mic is always that AT4050.
