So as I read reviews, I kept asking myself, but would I be happy with them. The reviews were great and the return policy is outstanding, so I decided to take a chance. I am so glad I did! They met my goal of being MUCH better than my old speakers (the brand that starts with a B and ends in OSE).The sound stage is amazing, but not very forgiving. Keep in mind, I am using these as desktop computer speakers. To sound their best, they have to be in front of monitors or anything else. They also need to be pointed straight at me. When I figured that out, the entire spectrum of sound was so much better and the sound stage and stereo separation was excellent! I am a bassist, so I tend to be really critical there. I attached an image of the sound spectrum. The bass is full and definitely there, but it is fairly tubby sounding and doesn't sound "punchy" until I turn it up to levels that my wife doesn't approve of ;-) One sound test that I always try is "do thy sound good at low levels?" That is one of the hardest things for speakers to do. I can tell you that the engineers at AudioEngine got right with the speaker/amp combination. They sound WONDERFUL at low to lower levels! Staged right, the detail and crispness of these speakers is phenomenal. My wife is SOOOO happy about that! What she was not thrilled about is this speaker system is not really comes to life when you start cranking it up! I got them (for myself) as a Father's Day present. So I told her I had to just try them out at various levels. Instead of making your ears bleed like some speaker systems do, these got punchier and I could feel it in my chest without ear fatigue. These speakers just BEG to be played loud. I think they would be a fantastic whole room or part of a surround sound system where "louder is always better."The only two things that I was a little disappointed in was the highest high and the lows. I am a bassist, so it is easy to be critical of most systems to a degree, but here is why. I attached an image of the sound spectrum of these generated playing some Eagles music. The tweeters were very silky and smooth, but I wish they were a little bit crisper (I am listening to some Journey as I write this, and they are perfect for that sound...). There is also plenty of bass (everything is stock flat, no EQ adjustments here). The bass is just a bit "tubby" sounding. It is not "punchy" until played loud enough that my wife threatened to call the cops! The bass is full enough, but not the most dynamic... You can also see that the highest highs that show off the shimmer of cymbals, the crispness from say brushes on a snare drum, etc. I do love the smoothness and silkiness of the tweeters, but there is some of the sound spectrum lacking. But as reality sets in, I recognize that B&W 801's are now $35,000 a pair. My B&W 805's size wise were more comparable, but they now cost $6000 per pair (with no amp section!). These AudioEngine A+ speakers are not perfect if you are an audio snob, but they are less than 1/10th of the cost of my 805's! And for 805's to sound like 805's, you'll need to spend another $6000 plus for amps and speaker wires! For the money, these speakers are truly unbelievable! I have been pleasantly suprissed and I am thrilled with my decision to "give them a try." You would have had to spend a LOT more to get anything even remotely close to this sound, let alone something better. I HIGHLY recommend them!

The sound has such a depth and there is actually 3D feeling when you listen to music. I'm in no sense audiophile but this speakers have spoiled me and I doubt I could go back to regular speakers. After 1 year of listening, and I average 5-6 hours per day (I work from home) they are going strong and there are ZERO issues. Best buying decision I made. Just buy the speakers and don't look back.

Bluetooth speakers not reconnecting on computer startup (Macbook 13 M2)

I am writing to seek assistance with an issue I am experiencing with my Macbook Pro 13 (M2) connected to an Apple studio display via Thunderbolt cable, an Apple keyboard, and Logitech mouse via Bluetooth, and Audioengine A5+ Bluetooth speakers. I would like to mention that when I restart my computer, the keyboard and mouse are reconnected automatically, but the speakers do not. I need to manually reconnect the speakers by clicking on the Bluetooth icon at the top of the screen and selecting the speakers from the drop-down menu. I would also like to mention that the speakers are always on and have never been connected to any other device; they are dedicated solely to my computer station. I would greatly appreciate any help in resolving this issue. Thank you

Good powered speakers for beginners and enthusiasts alike.

These speakers deliver a nice, detailed, and tightly-wound sound with highs and mids of exceptional clarity. The bass, however, is lacking to the point of almost non-existence. I personally could never use these speakers without an accompanying subwoofer.Luckily, these speakers are designed to be able to add one very easily. As standalone speakers, I prefer the sound of my comparably-priced Edifier S2000's by a considerable margin. However, those speakers will not accommodate an additional subwoofer. For the same price as these, the Edifier S2000's come in beautiful wood cabinets, and have BT AptX 5.0 connectivity. These speakers on the other hand have NEITHER of these features. Why Audioengine would even bother selling a non-Bluetooth enabled speaker in 2021 is beyond me. I was VERY disappointed when I realized the ones I ordered were wired only.So now, I am going to have to pay extra ($100 more) to upgrade to the A5+ w/ AptX 5.0, but for now the black ones aren't even in stock. So I said to go ahead and send me their wood ("bamboo") cabinet ones instead. Imagine my shock when I was sent an invoice for $170! (instead of $100) That's when I found out that AE also charges an extra $70 for the natural wood cabinets. So, in order to get the same bluetooth functionality and wood cabinets that come standard on the Edifier S2000's (their comparable model), I have to pay an extra $170 for the A5+'s. That's just too much, so I'm just going to have to wait for the black Bluetooth-enabled ones to come back in stock. Hopefully soon!Despite my criticisms above, the A5+ Speaker System is still an outstanding set of bookshelf speakers, so please don't get the wrong idea! I just wanted to explain the 4 out of 5.One thing I LOVE about these speakers is the fact that they have true analog amplifiers, which really makes my vinyl sound amazing. As far as I know, these are the only analog powered speakers on the market, so I'm still happy with my choice. I just REALLY hope they get the ones I want back in stock soon...

Great speaker from a great company
14 June 2022

I first bought these speakers many years ago for my office. They were simple to set up, worked great and I love them for many years. However, I moved from my downtown office to a home office and when I set them back up they did not work. I called audio engine, they walked me through many steps to try to get them to work, none of which worked. Even though the speakers were very old. Very old. They offered me a significant discount on a new set of speakers. I have now received them, they were equally easy to set up, and sound absolutely wonderful in my home office. I couldn't ask for better speakers for the money or better customer service from audio engine.

Amazing support the one time I had an issue, great sound and they look fantastic. It was a no brainer going for another set when I decided I wanted some bluetooth speakers. I figured I love my current ones, one with Bluetooth will be perfect.Functionally they are exactly the same other than the bluetooth. But for the $100 premium I wouldn't say it was worth it. Connection range is OK, sound quality is definitely diminished though. Granted I use a high end schiit DAC with my original set. But the wired connection is definitely better for these guys. The next step up

At some point, those other tiny desktop speakers are no longer what you're looking for. A hearing-aid wearer needs the best fidelity and clarity. The Audioengine speakers have real components, and are nice and clean from soft to loud. Lute, pipe organ, classical guitar, singing voice - all nicely done. Speech is easy to hear.Note, as they say in the instructions, the speakers do have some break-in. At first, they sound a little bright and tinny, and mellow out as the larger element comes to itself.Sub-woofer needed? Possibly not, if you're happy to hear the deepest tones as background. These speakers do that job. If you want room-shaking whallup, then you'll need a bigger cone and heavy mass, etc., a sub.Altogether, the 2 bookshelf speakers are very nice for ... MoreAt some point, those other tiny desktop speakers are no longer what you're looking for. These little speakers are truly incredible. I'm a former audiophile, had an $85K+ system, and these, small desktop, nearfield speakers hold their own in a way that's very impressive. I do not find I'm wanting anything more, I do have a sub integrated into my system and that brings it to another level, but even without they are very good. The way they vanish and create a remarkable seamless and wide soundstage is hard to believe. The only potential weakness is that they may be lacking a bit in detail, but my source is Spotify, routed through an AudioEngine D1 DAC, I'm not sure there's more detail to be had from this setup. What's most important, I find I enjoy listening to music (and Youtube) more than ever before at my computer. I have not used any of my headphones in months now and do not see myself going back. Having spent a lot of time in the ultra-hi end audio market it's tricky to find that sweet spot for speakers of being lively and enjoyable to listen to and warm enough to not be grating on poor recordings. Often speakers will bias one direction or the other, becoming either too clinical (harsh to listen to under anything other than ideal circumstances from recording to every piece of equipment before the speakers) or too romantic-sounding (which is nice at first, but ultimately boring and unexciting over time).I'm very VERY pleased with these wonderful little speakers. They even look nice!

Top notch value for minimalist turntable setup
31 March 2023

I have been running these with a U-Turn Orbit and the built in preamp for a minimalist office set up. It's been about 4 years and I am still extremely pleased with the sound and aesthetics of these speakers. I am now upgrading my turntable and preamp but the speakers will stay. The ability to quickly switch to Bluetooth to play Spotify from the phone or computer is huge. For this type of setup I don't think you could find anything better at this price point. I did briefly look at the new U-Turn Ethos to replace these but being smaller and slightly less powerful there is no reason to reconsider. If starting over with less space I might come to a different conclusion but these A5+ do what I need them to do perfectly.
