This was my first time trying the Barilla red lentil rotini. I must say it was pretty good rotini. The pasta cooked fast and was very tender. This rotini pasta has 23g of protein, 11g of fiber. It's also gluten free product. I know there is a lot of people looking for things to eat that doesn't have gluten in it. So this would be a very enjoyable pasta choice. There is a ton of recipes you could use this pasta for. I chose to do a rotini/spaghetti meal. I browned some ground chuck and added my favorite pasta sauce, and sprinkled parmesan cheese on top, and it was very good. I will definitely be buying this product again.

I used four different factors to compare the Barilla Red Lentil Penne to Barilla Whole Grain Penne. The factors were: 1) Ease of cooking 2) Taste 3) Nutritional value 4) Cost. The ease of cooking is fairly close – no real difference for the Red Lentil vs the Whole Grain. For taste, I did not notice any significant difference. I did try the Red Lentil and the Whole Grain with the Barilla Pesto sauce. The Pesto sauce does tend to overpower the taste of the pasta, but that is the normal way I consume pasta. For me, there is no significant difference in taste or texture. On the nutritional value, it depends on what is important to you. The Red Lentil is gluten-free. Comparing a 2 oz. serving, the Red Lentil vs the Whole Grain: Total carbohydrate 34g, 12% of daily value vs 39g, 14%. Dietary Fiber 6g, 21% vs 7g, 25%. Protein 13g, 14% vs 8g, 9%. The Red Lentil has slightly more iron and potassium than the Whole Grain. The Whole Grain has a handful of vitamins/minerals that the Red Lentil does not. On the cost side, the Red Lentil comes in an 8 oz box and the Whole Grain is packaged in a 16 oz box. You get twice the amount of Whole Grain for about 30% of the price. The Red Lentil cost approximately 5 times that of the Whole Grain. Conclusion – if gluten-free is a must for you to enjoy pasta, then the Red Lentil is a good choice. If you don’t have the dietary requirement for gluten-free, I can’t justify the cost difference.

Converted a chickpea hater - she loves it!

My family and I love pasta. We have pasta at least once a week and when I approached my family about trying the Barilla Chickpea Rotini, they were skeptical, but were willing to try it. Recently, I was making spaghetti my girlfriend was over and she hates chickpeas – her first reaction to when I told her we were having Barilla Chickpea Rotini, she asked if I could make regular pasta too. She even has seconds! When she left, I gave her some boxes of the pasta to try with her family. Her family loved it as well. I added a box of the Barilla Chickpea Rotini to a pot of homemade soup I made a few days ago, and the pasta didn’t get soggy like when I use regular pasta in my soups. It cooks up just like regular pasta, and everyone states that they didn’t even notice that it was made with chickpeas – they tasted no real difference. I have shared the pasta with my family and some other friends and so far, everyone loves it. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest opinion

Excellent Substitute for Traditional Pasta
11 December 2020

We recently purchased the Red Lentil Penne pasta from Barilla. I admit I was a bit skeptical but was very interested to compare this with a semolina flour based noodle that we are used to. Following a simple recipe my wife found online we added the uncooked pasta to a baking dish along with cut up sausage slices, tomato sauce and cheese. The pasta was not precooked so this would be a true test of the versatility. Following the prescribed cooking time and temperature my better half scooped up a healthy portion onto my plate and our kids' plates for a quick and easy lunch. I was very pleased with the flavor and texture of the pasta. If I hadn't known that this was a legume based pasta I would not have known to ask if something was different from normal. I do feel that the texture is slightly different from standard pasta as it has less chewiness or elasticity than would you would normally experience. For those looking for a good "al-dente" bite I felt like it succeeded. If you're looking for a softer pasta--first of all what's wrong with you? Seriously though, I'm not sure it would achieve a similarly soft texture for those that like a longer cook. Perhaps we'll experiment with that on our next round of cooking with the remaining noodles. If you are looking for a tasty gluten-free pasta this comes highly recommended by someone who is certainly not gluten-free. There is only one ingredient in this product and that is red lentil flour. You can make a pasta casserole with this product that will satisfy both sensitive and non-restricted diners at the table greatly expanding dinner options for a family with gluten based dietary restrictions. I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for my review.

I love this Barilla Red Lentil Rotini. I was a little worried to try it at first because every time I see “plant based” I get scared. This is amazing and I shouldn’t have been afraid. It tastes just like “regular” pasta. It’s more filling though. Perhaps it’s the protein that fills me up more or the fact that it’s so delicious I can’t stop eating it. Whatever it is I’m really happy about it. The texture is also like “regular” pasta. Exactly like it. You really wouldn’t know the difference except for that it has more protein and it’s a lot better for you. It has only one ingredient and that ingredient is red lentil flour. That’s it. Nothing else. It is also quick to cook. After boiling some water you boil your pasta for a full 7 minutes and it’s done, perfect. I made ... MoreI love this Barilla Red Lentil Rotini. Made a tasty base carb for my butter chicken

Love this red lentil penne. Came out just as delicious as their red lentil rotini version. High in fiber, high in protein, and completely gluten-free. Not mushy either, compared to other gluten-free pastas that have a tendency to fall apart when cooked. Lovely al dente bite. I made a butter chicken dish with it the other day, and it came out delish. I made this for my husband and myself (ended up with some leftovers), but you can easily double this recipe and use the whole box if you're cooking for your kids too. 1/2 box Barilla Red Lentil Penne, cooked as directed. Drain and set aside. 2 cups steamed peas 2 roasted chicken breasts, sliced For the sauce: 1 can evaporated milk (or 2 cups whole milk, simmered until reduced to 1 cup) 1/4 cup butter, divided into tbsps ... MoreLove this red lentil penne. Stir in onion and garlic. Cook slowly until onion caramelizes, about 15 minutes. -- In separate saucepan, melt butter over medium-high heat with tomato sauce, reduced milk or evaporated milk, salt, cayenne pepper, and garam masala. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low; cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Then stir in caramelized onion mixture. Take off heat. I bought this on my own. Don't believe these "free product in exchange for review" reviews.I cooked it up per the directions and Yikes, it came out otherworldly.Poor texture, taste, smell, mouthfeel.Covered it w butter, cheese, hazmat cloth, still disgusting. Smells and tastes like wet dog. Sorry, crumbly wet dog.In the trash. Wait, what's this? My trashcan coughed it back up.Hmm.. dare I try my garbage disposer, or just leave town?

DISGUSTING. I am usually on the hunt for different protein pastas so I was really excited to try this one. I cooked this pasta for 10 minutes because it would not get soft. And even with doing this, it was still tough. The reviews saying you can't even tell the difference are lying. You can definitely taste it and even the sauce couldn't mask the taste. I had to throw this away because of how much I didn't like it. If you are considering a protein pasta get Barilla Protein in a yellow box.
