Lightweight and strong, the Oru Bay Kayak might be the most versatile kayak on earth. The closed-cockpit performance kayak is sporty with plenty of speed and agility on the water and folds down to the size of a large suitcase. This means it can go almost anywhere you do, including as checked luggage for a flight. Tough and abrasion-resistant, the Black Edition is an ideal choice for new and experienced kayakers.

Not sure a review is even necassary as I dont see these available on REI anymore but here goes. I preveiously had two inflatable kayaks that were among the highest quality but they the seems did not hold up to Alaska. So saw this on Shark Tank, yeah i know, and thought hmmm, then I had a huge dividend, free shipping, yeah why not. The bottom line is, I disagree wiht some of the negative comments on here, but the glaowing five stat reviews on the Oru site are a bit over the top. It is light, very light, I would not say its simple to set up but it it easy about the same as an inflatable. The Oru brand accessories are over priced, buy generic like float bags and such. Stabilty is pretty darn good too, its does not feel tippy and has a second stage on its side. I would buy again and would even conider a Cost IF I could get it at REI. So why the 3.5? The company, because lets face it your reviewing a company as much as a product when you pay this much, the warranty is lacking, they dont offer free shipping but worst of all is the customer support. So you may never have an issue but if you do, your kinda on your own and the old REI guarantee (fir good reason) is gone.

So pros cons.Pro, the weight, . durability against the rocks, check. Stabilty pretty darn good, Tracking, meh, it has no rudder so you you get what you get. One review said it gets water INside the corragation but thats not my experience at all, bottm line pretty ship shape and water tight. Love all the deck lines. Mine seems to be an updated version with better closures, will see how they hold up.Not a pro or a con, set up is as decribed easier the more you do it, but all and all realtively quick and easy except the post into the seat could not be more backwards.Cons. well the aformentioned seat post, is awful, basically it two pegs that need to slide into slots that help keep the boat closed and together. Shipping is not free, I mean this is the standard now, free ground, kinda of a nickle and dime issue in my mind. If I want something I order it from REI as to ship to Alaska would cost my daughter her dowry. The accessories are way over priced for comparables of establshed paddling gear. Speaking of REI it appears these have disappeared from the inventory which gives me concern, like why? After all that, I would buy it again but I have used it only one season, I would even consider buying a Coast, IF I did not have to pay hundreds more for shipping. Time will tell.....

I love our kayaks, but I wish they were a little bit easier to assemble. I used mine more than a dozen times and I still wrestle with the assembly. Putting in the bulk heads and hooking the sides into the seat-back are particularly challenging steps.Taking the kayak apart is very easy, but when folding it back up, I wish the top-cover was easier to attach to the body. I wish it fit better and the straps were easier to put in place. One more thing, I ordered two paddles and the parts didn't quite snap together perfectly. I had to sand down the ends of the poles so that the pins would snap into the pin holes. One of the locks for paddle length adjustment isn't tight enough and the paddle length slips in use.

This is actually the second Oru Bay kayak I've purchased. We've had the first one over three years, so I knew exactly what I was getting and how they hold up. This kayak is perfect for me and my family. It's light enough for me, a medium-fit 60+ year old woman to carry down to the water, folds up to fit into our storage shed and I can fit two of them into the back of my small EV. It's a joy to paddle and stays very dry inside. I actually enjoy putting it together, though the first couple of times were challenging. I have now replaced a few parts on the older one and the repairs were relatively easy and the parts were reasonably-priced and arrived very quickly. I think we will manage to get a lot of years of enjoyment out of these boats!
I used to kayak or 'fanoe' as a kid with the boyscouts. Went on some real scouting backpacking trips. Had seen these and reminded me of those old days.A friend actually recommended a non foldable and said they had heard 'stuff' about these kayaks. They were wrongI'm not in white water rapids with this version. And maybe the material in a high stress situation would be of concern, but I've beaten it up a bit in car parking lots and on rocky, not sandy, beaches. Solid.Lastly, the amount of gear of gotten on it and taken with me while still being nimble and light,... We'll see below. Set up on a beach everything fit in or on the kayak, with the cooler. 6'3"... Boom.- CDigi
I bought the Lake Kayak and liked the concept of its portability so much that I immediately bought the Bay ST black edition. After one use, despite a few hiccups, this is my all-time favorite kayak.First and foremost, if you're new to Oru all together, let me tell you that the ease of transporting this "origami" kayak is worth every penny. I have a 5 1/2' bed pickup truck, which means that my old 10' kayak had to be tied to my roof. I loathed the time and energy it took to get my kayak up on the roof, then down into the water, and up on the roof again, and down into storage. It made it nearly impossible to go kayaking on a whim. But wit the Oru, I just toss the folded kayak into the bed of my truck anytime I feel like it and I'm off to the river. But wit the Oru, I just toss the folded kayak into the bed of my truck anytime I feel like it and I'm off to the river. There is a learning curve to unfolding the Bay ST. The written instructions could be clearer and better illustrated. There is a video available online, but the places where I put in at the river rarely have wifi so I wasn't able to watch the video. (Yes, I know I could watch the video at home and practice.)Once in the water, the Bay ST slices through the water with ease. I really enjoyed paddling this kayak. However, the worst aspect of the kayak is the absence of padding in the seat. I took a seven mile trip and my bottom was sore that I had to take several breaks to rub out my glutes. Oru sells a gel seat for $69, which I find nearly offensive after I paid $1599 for the kayak. The kayak should be comfortable enough to use without an additional cost.So I bought my own padded seat and now I can't wait to take her back on the river. I've even considered buying a second one just so I have one available for friends visit.
I live in a small city rowhome and drive a Nissan Versa so owning a kayak was out of the question until now. I have the Bay ST and yes, putting it together takes some practice. If you make a mistake, be prepared to take it apart and start again, with people watching. :) The other reviewer is totally correct - it's sooo much easier putting it together when it's warmer. I went out in the morning at 30ish degrees F and it took me forever due to the plastic being so stiff. I've taken her out 3 times now, all in the winter - on a reservoir, Baltimore's Inner Harbor, and a major Chesapeake Bay tributary. She did great on all three, tracked well, super easy to maneuver, and cuts quietly through the water. She did great on all three, tracked well, super easy to maneuver, and cuts quietly through the water. The Inner Harbor was partially frozen and it handled this with no problems. Living in the city, I usually have to put it together in some weird spot and carry her down to the launch, this is not a problem at all. It's crazy lightweight and easy to lift. Getting in and out is definitely a little bit trickier than your standard kayak. Being so lightweight is tends to bob a bit more. You just have to be a bit more thoughtful about your movements. I'm 5'5" and 140 lbs and I'm very comfortable in it. I haven't used the floats yet since I've been on flat water, I would definitely use them if I was dealing with more boat traffic or higher winds. If you buy the paddle, it actually fits inside the boat when folded. I have the phone dry bag too and love it. Super smart design for the water. I look forward to traveling with this kayak and not stressing about boat rentals or lugging heavy equipment.
The advertisements for this kayak in the videos make it looks simple to assemble and utilize. I am incredibly disappointed in this product. I chose it for its simplicity… lightweight and easy to assemble and stability on the water. These qualities are necessary for me as I have had a radical mastectomy and do not have much upper body strength. The oragami assembly seems so simple in the videos. The “unfolding” of the kayak was so difficult that my daughter, who is a muscular, division 1 athlete struggled to help “unfold it”. Don’t even ask about “refolding” it! My daughter, son, and husband are still trying to figure it out without breaking it. I paid over $1000 for this product, thinking I could use it on my own. It rides more like a canoe than a kayak. I took it out one time on a calm lake and it was so unstable and flimsy feeling that I, as an experienced kayaker, had to return to shore. There are no return labels or instructions on how to return it that came with it. I am just so disappointed because I waited and waited for this to be delivered and was hoping to use it this summer. I should’ve been tested in a different product. But the reviews were so good on this it made it seem so simple that I thought this would be the perfect solution rather than having to have somebody else transport my kayak and put it in the water, I was excited that I could possibly do this on my own. But again, when my young, athletic children struggled with it , I knew something was wrong. Both of my children tried to kayak in it, and they agreed that it seems very unstable.
My girlfriend and I each bought an Oru Bay ST two years ago. Neither of ours have had any leaks or quality control problems. While the Bay St doesn't assemble quite as quickly as the manufacturer would have you believe, it folds down really quickly after use. The fact that something which looks like an oversized suitcase can transform this way into a kayak at all is actually impressive. Once assembled, it paddles fast, handles nicely, and tracks straight. The cockpit opening is a bit small for someone my size (5'11", 180 lbs.) to get in and out of, but there's plenty of room for long legs once inside. And you will likely want some additional padding for the seat bottom. I recommend a Skwoosh gel seat pad, which is more comfortable than the additional "seat wedge" ... MoreMy girlfriend and I each bought an Oru Bay ST two years ago. After searching for a few weeks last year, we acquired two Bay ST kayaks. We've tried inflatables in the past, but found them too difficult to navigate. They fit perfectly in our SUV's trunk (both kayaks) and we've been taking them on camping trips and day trips. The portability and easy storage make Oru an ideal choice for those who want to hit the water at any time of day, without being limited by kayak rental facility operating hours.
