First, let's get beyond the "all plastic pedals are cheap" bugaboo: Behringer uses thick, tough, high impact, molded plastic housings for their pedals and I've never been bone-headed enough to horse-stomp so hard on one as to break or even mar it. They're tough. If you somehow manage to break one - guess what? They're inexpensive enough you can just buy another. . With that out of the way, let's talk electronics: I own their 7 band eq, their compressor/sustain, the overdrive/distortion box and their digital delay and all I can say is here's where your money does it's work - the compressor especially is one of the best you can buy and all of their products are full bypass and next to silent under use with the correct amperage 9v power supply. Controls pots and switches are top quality and the jacks snap in with good, solid clicks. . Whether or not you're on a budget, you owe it to yourself to try out some of their awesome pedals. I especially like the OD300. It's a solid performer with sweet tones that suit a thousand performing styles.

Ive owned multiple boss cs3 compressors and this to me sounds exactly the same, it creates the same amount of noise and buzz of a boss model if you put the sustain knob up too high. I use a noise gate so this isnt a problem for me, but something too consider along with the housing being plastic

I had a Boss CS-3 a few years ago on a pedal board but, I sold that whole rig, just too much to navigate and, a pedalboard can be a little hard to adjust and, navigate through. So entered the Boss Katana 100 with floor pedal. Much easier to setup, use, and, navigate through. Large improvement! I was missing the compressor and, what it would do for my sound. I know that a CS-3 could be downloaded into the effects part of this amp but, I was very pleased with setup that the amp came with stock.I play mostly clean with a Strat and, a Tele and, occasionally I wil play a guitar with Humbuckers if the need arises at a gig. I never travel with 1 guitar always 2 maybe 3. Dialed in a Great Country sound on the amp, slap delay, touch of reverb but, the comp was missing. I ... I purchased this Behringer unit to use at an upcoming gig to see how it would compare to the Boss CS-3 and, it performed perfectly. No more Boss CS-3 for the price of this unit and, the performance why would you want the Boss? Exactly the same except the price. The only reason I gave this unit 4 stars was because of the plastic case and, changing the battery which I don't do because I always use a power pack. Plastic will just not hold up like metal will.I left the unit on all night and, the only change I made was to increase the sustain to the point of noise and, backed off a little. I plan on keeping this unit but, I also have an MXR Dyna Comp coming which I've been told and, have seen in some videos will definately go over the top of most of the other comps out there in sound an, use. This Behringer unit is a darned good unit for the money and, I'm giving it good words and, would definately purchase it over the Boss which is just the same except for the case but a lot less dinero. After using the Katana for over a year and, using the FX that are built in it's all I want and, a lot less to haul & setup but a comp is going on the floor next to my Morely volume pedal, Done.

Don't expect something robust that will last for years and years of gigging. This oedal has a hard plastic casing which I imagine won't take a lot of stomping but as I'm using it for recording perposes only, it's ideal. The tone is crystal clear and basically does what it says on the box. A minor gripe is that in order to replace the battery you have to unscrew the back but as I use a mains adapter it wasn't an issue for me. If you want durability go for a Boss, otherwise this is a superb pedal for the money.
I had doubts about compression helping. I was looking especially for a smoother, more even, punchier clean sound with better sustain. This delivers! And it is great with other effects too! Can almost just leave it on. The case is plenty sturdy (I mean, what am I going to do -- jump on top it? I click it on and off with my foot.), really easy to use, great adjustments. Will also be using it with my Traveler nylon to even out the string volume. Very happy with this pedal.
Overall, this is well made and works just as advertised. The only minor down sides Ive found are the small control knobs (common on most pedals) and the very difficult battery replacement. You have to take off the pedal pivot to get at the battery. So far, it is lasting a long time but it would be a better product with a simpler battery cover. I still recommend this to anyone that needs it. Much less expensive than many others that do no more.
I've had this compressor pedal for 2 yrs now. It's still working good and sounds good. I use it on my Les Paul, Telecaster Thinline and SG Special. I've used it on a Marshall, Genz-Benz, Peavy and Laney amps. I've played live and recorded with it. Always makes the leads sound better. I bought it for a backup for my aging DOD pedal, but I liked it well enough that now the DOD has been retired to backup. I have absolutely no complaints. Can't beat the price. Berringher makes good products without breaking the bank....kudos!!!
I was a little skeptical of the price of this compressor but since I already own a VAMP 3 and it is very good so I decided to try it. The unit is made of a kind of indestructible plastic and is very solid. I like the added controls for volume and tone as well as the compression controls. The compression is excellent and the attack sweep is pronounced and has a wide range that is really useful. It sounds especially good on the split coil settings and is smooth and extremely quiet. I would definitely recommend this pedal to anyone. It may not be as good as ones that cost 4 or more times as much but it is pretty close.
In my previous review I gave this 4 stars only because it has a plastic case. Well if you are careful and, don't abuse or throw your gear around and, I don't know why you would this should give you Great service and, last for a good long while. What I really want to say is I had an occasion to A-B this compressor against an MXR Dyna Comp and, the MXR lost and, is going bye-bye. I have 3 other Behringer pedals and, they have served me well and, I will add that I've had them for well over 5yrs. I take care of my gear and, I know that's the reason why. I also talked about the Boss CS-3 comp in my last review and, it is a Great pedal, kinda pricey but, that's not uncommon for a Boss pedal. I also made the comment about the Boss Katana 100 amp and, pedal that goes with it and, again I will state it is a SUPER amp and, pedal combo for playing live! Concerning this Behringer CS400 pedal, it is the best deal going on a compressor concerning the Value in what you get for what you pay. Hands Down! I'll be using mine for a good long while.
This is a low cost but great sounding compressor pedal for guitar.I have two other compressor pedals (as well as two rack compressors) that both cost more than three times what this Behringer pedal cost but I like this one better. It just does the job without adding noise or coloration to the guitars tone. I have been playing pro for 40 years now and have been through many pedals, amps and guitars in that time. Fortunately I got over the "fancy name brand only" stigma that many people still have and just look for something that is cost effective and just does the job. This compressor is a great example. My set up is my Les Paul or Epiphone Sheraton into the Behringer pedal then out to my old Dunlop Wah pedal to a BBE Sonic Stomp (also a great product) into a VOX ... (Although there is a decent compressor built into the effects section of the VOX VT30 I like the Behringer better.)If you are looking for quality sound at a great price buy the Behringer pedal. (Don't buy the Behringer DC9 compressor pedal. I bought that one first. It colors your tone noticbly and compresses the signal way too much and makes your tone thin and weak,)
