I recently had some REI Dividend that I had to use and decided that I wanted a new knife. I’ve had a Kershaw Onion for a few years now and it was my first knife. After going online and looking to see what I might like, I went down a rabbit hole of the 940 by reading reviews and articles on it. A lot of good things were said about it even here, which is why I wanted to leave a review for anyone wanting to purchase this.Overall, you definitely get what you pay for. With my dividends and 20% off, the knife still came out to 100. Taking it out of the box, I was shocked at how light it was compare to my Kershaw. My Kershaw felt super heavy. The fit and finished of the 940-1 was near perfect. The blade is center and the handles feel very sturdy and robust. The fit and finished of the 940-1 was near perfect. The blade is center and the handles feel very sturdy and robust. I have slightly above average hands and the knife fit well with my grip. The Axis lock wasn’t gritty like what most people said it to be and after a few days of opening and closing it…it became perfect. It now open and close with ease. The only negative thing I will say about this is it came sharp out of the box…but not super sharp like how I would want it. But it’s okay.I’ve shredded and broke down numerous boxes the first weekend I got it and also cut veggies and fruits and going back to cutting boxes again. I’ve used this on hikes and camping trips and it has always retain it’s edge by the time I come home.If you are on the fence on getting the 940-1, I would say just get it. It’s definitely a nice knife that will get a lot of attention. Although pricey, if you have some dividends to use or the discount like I did, I would totally use it. Overall, I am super happy with the knife and sometimes hold it and admire the beauty that it is.

I love this knife. I researched it for almost a year until all the stars aligned that I could purchase. The reverse tanto still blade is beautiful and creates a strong edge for heavy prying like paint can lids. The S30V steel is a perfect material for this knife size. The purple spacers gives it subtle pizzazz complimenting the forest green of the G10 handle. And so lite in my pocket you never would know it’s there which is great because my Buck 110 is like a 10 lbs weight. But much to my chagrin a 2 WEEKS after I bought it my partner and I moved house and I lost my 940 in the scuttle. Oh well I’ll wait till REI has its next sale.

Great knife! I didn’t like it at first. Felt too long and skinny, but it started to grow on me. Very unique but useful blade shape. Sharp out of the box. Action is crazy smooth and super satisfying. If it’s anywhere near me, I will flick it open and close it until there’s something to do. Wasn’t sure if I wanted the aluminum or the g10 and I’m sure both are great, but I do like the weight of this with the aluminum metal.

This is a great knife. No doubt about it. The knife I received operated very smoothly. Excellent lock-up. Great tolerances. Easy on the eyes. Lightweight, strong, with excellent balance and grip. Certainly high-quality. I wasn't happy with the factory edge, so I gave Benchmade a ring. Waited less than 2 minutes on the phone and got an actual person! The gentlemen who answered was great. Authentic and polite. (I'm not an easy-to-please person either.) He was either very well-trained on the products, was a knife-builder himself, or both. He sent a label and promised to have the knife back to me, remarkably sharp, asap.People underestimate the importance of customer service far too often. I couldn't ask for better customer service. If you plan to buy more than one or two lifetime knives, I highly recommend these guys. For the price, the 940-2 is hard to beat. It feels so natural in the hand that it's amazing. Perfectly designed EDC from an ethical company that keeps customer satisfaction on the forefront.Buy one.
My local REI (Clackamas) is selling these for $135 right now! If you know knives then you know that is a great deal on one of the best pocket knives ever designed. Also a cool color combo mimicking the classic aluminum 940 that I haven't seen anywhere else. An REI exclusive maybe?Mine came very sharp with the typical Benchmade "toothy edge" and is decently centered with good action.I took one star off for the usual minor inconsistencies that I see on modern Benchmades. The final edge grind is slightly taller on one side and there is some inconsistency in the pattern on the scales. The pattern goes a little smooth in a couple of spots that makes them look worn, but I think it is just a minor manufacturing issue. All in all, a great knife at a very good ... MoreMy local REI (Clackamas) is selling these for $135 right now! One of the most popular and best pocket knives on the market, and for good reason. The finish is durable - dropped several times and the blade is still in alignment and the green anodized coating is still 100% intact. Blade edge is durable and continues to hold its edge after a lot of use. I have not needed to sharpen this knife yet and it still slices through a sheet of paper with near zero effort and without fraying the paper - clean cut.
I am a big fan of Benchmade knives and have another iteration of the 940 Osborne but I was not impressed with this version. The carbon fiber scales were nice but a bit rough around the edges. The action on the axis lock was sluggish and when flicked open with any amount of speed it got stuck at the top and had to be snapped back down to close it. The packaging was slightly nicked up and the knife was not in any plastic packaging and was half out of its carry bag. The knife did not seem very sharp per factory spec either - not sure what is going on in their production line but it's not like I remember. Before cutting or carrying I decided to return it as $300 for a knife I don't love is just way too much of a gamble hoping it will grow on me or get better with use.
I read tons of reviews and they all said the same thing essentially. Everyone loved the knife and many stopped carrying their old EDCs after buying this knife.I’ve owned this knife for over a year now and waited a good while before I wrote a full review because I think people deserve a review that’s more than a quick first impression. At first glance, I didn’t love the design of the knife. It’s kind of weird looking in all honesty but then the knife kept catching my eye every time I saw it snd I always wondered where the high praise came from and why.I will break down the reasons I think the knife deserves such a high rating:1- like must Benchmade knives, it’s fully ambidextrous so anyone can use it with ease. The axis lock makes it easy to open and close with one hand from either side of the knife and the pocket clip can be moved depending on the user’s needs.2- the blade profile was very well thought out. The reverse tanto creates added strength in case the user needs to dig / pry at something and the cutting edge has a mild curve that makes it very “slicy” for EDC work but it also works well around camp.3- the S30V steel is a great balance of edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance, and isn’t horrible to sharpen (although it does take some effort to sharpen) there are other higher end steel options like S90V but it’s much harder to sharpen so I’d prefer the S30V personally.4- the knife really holds up to daily use and abuse. Aside from some mild cleaning and oiling, it hasn’t needed much maintenance. Most often I run a cotton swab through the handle and blow it out with my compressor and put a tiny bit of oil on it and it feels like new.My only criticism is that I actually don’t like the pocket clip. It is a bit rigid for my liking but it’s far from a deal breaker. If you’re teetering on whether or not to buy this knife, I also own a Benchmade Bugout, Bailout, Emissary, and Mini-Coalition and a few others from other manufacturers. The 940 sees more use than all others combined.
Package arrived in 2 days. Mine was brand new, no issues like others noted thinking theirs were from the display. I got a great discount as an REI member which is crazy because benchmade's are rarely on sale or accept coupons. I thought I may want the mini 945 but was really glad i didn't go that route. This is the perfect size for an EDC and its really light. Action with the axis lock was a little stiff out of the box. Overall love this knife's muted forest green G10 with the purple accents. A great throwback to the original.
I've been carrying the classic old green 940 for about 2 years now. Every now and then I'll stick a different knife in my pocket because I feel like changing it up, but within the day the 940 ends up back in my pocket. I'm hard on this knife. I cut, pry, dig, scrape, chop, and hammer with it and it holds up well. The reverse tanto shape makes the blade thicker, and stronger than it looks. I prefer the classic aluminum scales because it adds a little weight so the knife feels solid in my hand. The bugout on the other hand feels very cheap to me. That's unfortunate because it's a pricey knife. The only problem I've had with the 940 is the omega springs for the axis lock have broken a few times already. Because of this I just ordered a bunch of replacement springs ... MoreI've been carrying the classic old green 940 for about 2 years now. Because of this I just ordered a bunch of replacement springs online so I'm ready for it. I bought my neighbor / best friend a 940 for Christmas and he is a daily 940 guy now as well. If I lost mine right now, I'd have another one ordered before the day was over. It's not my favorite knife, but it is my favorite EDC, and I'd recommend it to anybody who is serious about keeping a working knife on them that will hold up to some abuse. 🇺🇲
