Here's a thought: in a very basic headlamp, why not make it simple and FUNCTIONAL. So no 'dial in your brightness' dimming features, just a button to turn in on and off. After very limited use with this thing, I found that it was draining the batteries while turned off. Then, after replacing the batteries, it suddenly cut out and wouldn't turn on (do NOT ever use this thing where you'd actually need to rely on it). So I stowed it, got out my backup, and an hour later discovered that it had turned itself on. And now, the only way I can turn it off is by pulling one of the batteries out. Worst money I ever spent - way to go MEC, stocking this rubbish.

I have used this headlamp for many dark spring walks with my dog because it's still chilly for backpacking but I have big plans for this headlamp this summer. It provides a bright output and a large light circumference for all your nighttime maneuvering. There are great features including dimming/brightening that give a brief flash when you have reached the lowest/highest settings. With other headlamps it was always a guessing game. There is also a "lock" button so you can ensure it won't inadvertently turn on and waste battery life when stuffed into your backpack. You can also lock it on your favorite brightness setting. For those of us who are weight-conscious about packing our gear, the total weight with batteries is 2.9 oz., nice and light. I also like that ... This light has all the basic functions you need in a headlamp.Pros:1. Light - 300 Lumen is plenty for most uses.2. Dimmable - I love the "infinitely dimmable" feature. It is very easy to hold the button until you get the right light setting. If works the same as the Black Diamond Moji, which I love! This is much better than the 3 light settings of other headlamps.3. Ease of Use - It is easy to dim the light and turn on & off the strobe setting. If you dim the light, the next time you turn it on, it stays at your setting (easy not to blind your friends).4. Strap - The strap is comfortable & easy to take off to wash. Didn't know I wanted a washable strap till now.Cons:1. Not Waterproof - This is a feature that gets lost to keep cost down. If you're going ... If you're going ultralight / using only 1 lamp, or if you're somewhere very rainy, I'd get something waterproof instead.2. No Red Light - Red light is great for preserving night vision, especially for star gazing, not bothering your tent partners, late night bathroom trips, etc. More expensive headlamps will have a 2nd LED that's red.3. Dimmable - Yes, I listed this as a positive as well. My only complaint is when you adjust brightness, it restarts at max. It is impossible to go darker without going max bright first.Overall, good headlight. Perfect for car camping & more.

Overall, the light is sturdy and compact. It's worth the money. To dim or brighten the light, you press on either end of the single, elongated button. The instructions are entirely pictographic with no written description, and I initially interpreted them to mean that I should press the button and slide my finger to dim (which worked poorly). I figured it out after a while, though. The real trouble is that there's no indication of this functionality on the switch or the housing. If you weren't aware that the light dims, you'd assume that it only has on-off functionality. Knowing myself, in a few months I'll completely forget it dims. Especially since I own several head lamps and they all dim differently.I really feel like this was an engineering solution that ... MoreOverall, the light is sturdy and compact. Especially since I own several head lamps and they all dim differently.I really feel like this was an engineering solution that simplified manufacturing, not a feature designed with the end user in mind. It seems like it would have been so simple, if not cost effective, to mold a plus and minus icon onto either end of the button or the housing. If they had done that I wouldn't even need the confusing instructions. Not a huge deal, but irksome enough to motivate me to write a review.
The Black Diamond Astro headlamp is an excellent little piece of gear with great functionality and form. The headband is easy to adjust and comfortable against my forehead and also does not slip out of place. The light itself is nice and bright and lights up a decently wide area. I love that you can hold the button to adjust how bright or dim the light is--rather than just having one single "bright" and another "dim" setting. It's almost like a dimmer dial in a house. The dual functionality of the rechargeable or regular alkaline batteries is also a huge plus. If you're out on the trail and need spare batteries, you can use them. But if you're just going out for a night and then coming back home, you can avoid using disposable batteries. The recharging unit is easy ... The recharging unit is easy to use--keep in mind it does not come with a wall plug (just a USB cable) so you'll need to use one you already have (I used the plug part of an iPhone charger). Overall super happy with this headlamp and can't wait to take it on more adventures!
This is a great headlamp - very bright, lightweight, and comfortable. The option to either have AAA batteries or a rechargeable battery brick is really nice flexibility for longer trips. You don't have to commit to the environmental impact of going through AAA batteries, but you can get a set if you're in a pinch. That said, a set of AAA's or a charged battery pack will get you a long way. Cycling through the light settings is a little confusing because you can double click the button or hold it down or click it once to do different things. If you use a headlamp a lot you'll get used to it quickly, but if you go weeks between uses you might forget and find yourself stuck in strobe mode without remembering to double click. I will be keeping it in my standard camping gear.
After 7 months of use I needed to do an update. For the price on sale, you can't beat it. That being said, my light stopped working after it got wet. It could have been caused by a hard impact around the same time. The next time I went to turn it on it didn't work. Tried new batteries and nothing. I checked the wiring and it seemed good. Must be the LED I'm guessing. I just bought a few more. I'm happy with amount of use and abuse I got out of it. It's probably just one of those odd failures. Not worth deducting a star over it. Still worth the sale price. I should mention that towards the end the batteries died quicker on high. Cheers
In a world of complicated designs and the battle for who has the most lumens, I just wanted a simple and reliable headlamp. The Astro doesn't disappoint. The strap is comfortable, even with 3 AAA batteries installed. The fact it is rain and storm proof is great for backcountry adventures, as well as the "lock" to make sure it doesn't accidentally turn on in your pocket or pack. 300 max lumens is more than enough for most backcountry adventures. There is also an option for a rechargeable lithium Ion battery from BD.For an inexpensive and reliable headlamp with BD quality, you can't beat this headlamp.
This has quickly become one of my favorite headlamps. It's no-nonsense with one button to power on. Holding down on that button dims the light, and you release it when the brightness is what you want. Awesome when you are trying to make batteries stretch or want to avoid waking up other people in your tent. This headlamp does NOT have the buttonless "tap" feature to turn the headlamp to its brightest setting. I would always end up tapping that when I was adjusting the angle of my older BD Storm and Spot headlamps and blinding myself and everyone around me, so I am happy to see that they don't have it on this model.
I initially thought I would only use it for camping, but it's turned into my go-to light source for everything...working on car, running at night, stuff in the backyard, changing a flight tire, basically anything that I use to use my iphone or a flashlight for, and of course all of the other camping/overlanding activities. I had one previously that ate of AA batteries, so I like the simplicity of the rechargeable battery. I basically just keep it in my car at all times, with the charger. No complaints thus far. If I had to find something, you could argue that it may be slightly bulkier than others, but only because of the rechargeable battery, but it's still very compact.
