Beware of buying these. I have not used them yet on any trails as these are brand new. However, the low profile basket that comes attached to these is impossible to get off without causing any actual damage to the basket. At first I thought this was simply a user error on my end. I took them back into REI for assistance. They also could not unscrew the smaller basket from the tip. They informed me that they have seen this same defect with a lot of these products from customers. Not only is the smaller basket impossible to get off, but the larger basket that is provided has terrible threading on it. It looks melted or stripped away. I was instructed to email Black Diamond and wait for their response to the issue. The product is very lightweight, very comfortable, and very easy to assemble and break down. Quite unfortunate that they have a major design issue with the baskets/threads. Also let it be known, that this is not just an issue with one of the poles, this is an issue with both poles in the set. They both are not able to have the smaller basket removed and both larger baskets have issues with the threading.

I know Black Diamond trekking poles are primarily used for hiking, but I use them for support with balance issues I have. For this purpose they are perfect. In one of my physical therapy sessions some years ago, the therapist suggested using hiking poles instead of a cane. She showed balance was much better maintained with poles. I started using a beautiful carved wooden hiking stick I already owned, but it was difficult to safely store when out in public, like at restaurants and such. I needed something that folded up. I read up on reviews and Black Diamond became the perfect choice. I just purchased my second set. With my constant daily use of my first set, a bugee cord tore on one of my two original sticks. I keep a stick in my car and one in my wife's car and one in the house. When we go out and stop somewhere, the folded stick is so small in fits in my wife's purse. When people see my stick, like at doctors' offices for example, they ask where i bought it and I tell them that I purchased it at REI. I also always relate its usefulness. They almost always say they are going to check them out. I believe Black Diamond does not know the versatility of this product outside its intented use. I am really very happy I found such a great tool.

Bought these for Ultra trail running. I borrowed a pair from a friend during a pacing event and saw the benefits of having them on climbs, descents and late in the race. Here's the gotcha on the 4 star rating - the sizing chart's do not match; online vs. packaging. 110cm size is for a person 5'1"- 5'4" . I 'm 5'6" and should have the 120 based on the arm bend diagram and height chart. TEI & Black Diamond should make an update. Hope to swap before an event this weekend.

I love these things.I have an aluminum pair and have recently been using my parents who bought the carbon ones. They are light and fold up whcih is my favorite thing about them. The folding allows them to go on my pack easy and then can be used cleanly with the BD distance packs for even more clean usage. I use them running and hiking and on snow. My only pole I own and for good reason. Now my note about the usage, these things are brittle. What do I mean by brittle? Cutting down on weight has the benefit of being lighter. But it means the design has to compromise in some durability and strength to compensate. For these poles the strength up and down along the pole is great. What is a problem is the when any force is applied perpendicular to the axis of the pole. It is liable to snap and this is even more the case with the carbon poles since carbon fibre is not a flexible material. So be extra careful to not step on them. I did that and snapped one of my poles EASILY. Not that it is meant to do that but be careful!
These poles solve the one problem I had with traditional ajustable poles: poles that lower as you hike. The Distance Z have no adjustment (make sure you order the correct size) yet they fold smaller than any other foldable model. This means they won’t loosen or lower as you hike since they are fixed length. They are lightweight (although I suspect these aluminum versions are heavier than the carbon poles) and easy to break down into its compact size. The grips are long enough to use in two different positions and the foam is confortable. I also bought these because most people claim they pass TSA security check so you can bring them in carry-on when travelling. I’ll test that claim on my next trip this summer.
I did not get any rubber tips for the poles only plastic basket larger than those on the poles already. The metal tips tend to slip on smooth or wet rocks. Themetal tips have not worn out on this trip yet, & I’llbring them in after my three week trip on rock &cobblestone in southern Balkan countries to see whythe poles did not have rubber tips. Were they takenoff the package, or do they have to be purchased separately?
These worked fine for a while but then on the second day of a 10-day trip the push-in adjustment button broke. One pole was now unusable. No way to fix. Had to continue with one pole and carry the other. Left at home my previous poles that locked by simply twisting. Never any problems with these. These BD poles were lighter but will likely return to simpler locking method.
I originally had the last generation of Carbon FLZ poles and enjoyed them as they got me through a lot of runs/races. The clasp/pin that holds the extension eventually broke(the ring which was supported) These new poles have a much more durable pin/clasp which is also easier to push too! I also see that the poles are much sleeker and look great with new design. The straps on previous had a velcro closure which could scratch and the strap itself was a bit rough. The new poles have a very soft strap and the excess hides in itself easily as well.I have used the new ones only a few times but am very impressed with the new style and upgrades.
I have owned the older version of this product (black and chrome) for years and have loved every bit of them but the tip recently broke after thousands of miles of use and I purchased the newer version from REI. They were not an upgrade at all. In fact, I am planning to return them because of two reasons: first, the strap system is very difficult to adjust and it loosens as you apply downhill pressure on the straps. I would have returned them for this alone, but also, the fittings where you break down the poles and put them back together are very tight to the point where you have to pull very hard to get them apart and each time it feels like I am going to pull the poles completely apart and break them. The old version had straps that were easily adjustable and stayed at the length you designated, and also were easy to disassemble and reassemble. Not these…so I will be trying the Leki poles which are more expensive. But BD can’t regress their products and assume I will continue buying them.
I ordered the longest poles available as I'm tall. The poles came with grips so narrow that the poles were uncomfortable. My glove size is L not XL, so I'm not freakishly large.. This is my third set of BD poles, and I've never had this problem before. The return policy requires everything to be new and unused, but just walking around the block made these un-returnable. Now I'm stuck with poles too long for my wife and un-useable for me. Maybe a tall person with very small hands would enjoy these.
