A narrow margin separates bluebird days and afternoon thunderstorms when you're in the mountains. Here to strike that perfect protective balance, the Black Diamond Men's FineLine Stretch Rain Shell acts as a lightweight, waterproof, breathable, and windproof shield against the elements for your alpine adventures, from rainy trail runs to escaping freshly-bagged peaks as torrential storms roll in. A 2. 5-layer BD. dry construction keeps rain, sleet, snow, and wind at bay, while allowing internal moisture to escape easily, as the four-way stretch face fabric enables a full range of motion for levels of comfort not usually found in rain shells. Gusseted panels in the underarm areas further open up your mobility. The adjustable, climbing-helmet-compatible hood ensures that safety isn't compromised, and a zippered chest pocket stows the entire jacket for easy packing.

AWESOME Jacket

One word – AWESOME. This is a great jacket. The design and simplicity is fantastic and the quality/workmanship is very good. The finish quality is beautiful – from the sealed seems to the hems/edges and the simple corded hanging loop. This is a minimalist packable jacket with every feature you would want without adding extra weight/bulk. For example, the sleeve cuffs have no Velcro adjustment strap, but the end isn’t just bunched-up elastic. The sleeve end is nicely finished and is just tight enough to keep the elements out, but loose enough to let some air in and let it breathe. The sleeves are long enough to still give you coverage when you’re doing something active – even riding a bike or kayaking – but not so long that they get in the way. I’m 5’10, 170lbs and the medium fits me perfectly.

I was looking for a rainshell for a while and decided on the fineline for backpacking and weathery crag days! Its light super packable stood up to heavy rain for about 40 minutes in the high sierra! It is not fully featured with hip pockets and put zips but that is not what it is meant for. I would work great on a cold windy crag morning with a light puffy or in my case gettinf caught in a downpoor in the hogh sierra! Simple but versitile!

I have spent the last 10 years in the OR helium and used them heavily including backpacking guiding in Colorado. The time finally came to get a new shell and I decided to get the new kid on the block sold by the “stretch” marketing. IMO, this jacket is better than the helium in every way except that it is 1oz heavier and packs slightly larger. But other than that it is much more comfortable, feels more durable, seems more waterproof. Etc! I couldn’t be more pleased

Great Shell
29 November 2022

I have used this in many different weather conditions that the Sierra Nevada has had to offer. The drawstrings at the waist and hood allow for extra protection when the weather calls. The super bright orange makes me easy to spot which is a pro for me as I do lots of solo adventures and safety is always a top priority. It has stayed clean even after some hefty use.

Great price for a nice rain shell
30 October 2022

I wasn't looking for a dedicated rain shell, but Mountainsteals had this for a price I couldn't resist, so this jacket is stowed in my daily carry backpack. It fits nicely with an athletic cut, as do most Black Diamond jackets, though I wish it had pockets for the hands. Still, they have to sacrifice something to keep it light. I haven't had a chance to try it out in the rain yet.

High quality, but hood is massive
3 August 2023

Well made and premium materials. I am 5-8, 145lbs and the small fit my torso and arms well. But the hood is laughingly large. It goes over my eyes down to my nose. I couldn't imagine wearing it in the wind. When you're not wearing the hood, it is way too much material hanging on your back. It does have a drawstring, but that just leaves a lot of material bunched up. Unless you always wear a helmet, the hood is just too big. Which is fine if it is mentioned, but the description doesn't note it, and the photo makes it look smaller on the model.-I just checked BD's website and they mention it is sized for a helmet, unfortunately Moosejaw doesn't, so I should have read BD's website before ordering. Sadly had to return.

Incredible function/style, solid durability
15 May 2023

I just ordered my second Fineline. The first one got me four and a half years of regular light use before the inner fabric layer started to separate and let in water around the nape area.Packs up super small, keeps you dry, great for travel/camping. I really like this jacket and am looking forward to receiving my new one.

More useful than I thought
6 February 2020

I bought this jacket from BD in June of 2018. I wanted a light rain shell to have in my pack and for occasional used around town. The build quality is good, seems and stitching are tight and even, but the features and fit are what have really kept me coming back. The jacket stuffs into its own pocket which is nice because you don't need stuff sack for keeping it in a pack. The waist draw chord is only accessible at one side, very simple, very light, I love it. The hood is just big enough to wear over a climbing helmet and has a stiff enough brim to keep the rain off of your face. The single draw chord at the back of the hood is one of my favorite features. It cinches the hood down around your head at an angle and works well. The jacket has a tall thin neck, and with ... MoreI bought this jacket from BD in June of 2018. The jacket fit is thin but the stretch allows active movements. In general BD nailed it with the less is more philosophy from the fit to the minimal features this jacket is the backup rain piece you want to have. It's not the lightest thing on the market and doesn't stuff down quite as small as other jackets but remember this is an actual rain jacket, not a wind shirt that will leak 10 minutes into your run.

Very cost-effective rain shell.
7 September 2019

I was impressed with the feature vs price of the jacket and did not expect it to perform so well. First of all, the weight indicated at Altitude Sport is incorrect, it actually weighs about 260g for a size large. The 320g must be for an XXL or something. Second of all the stretch (2-way) is really noticeable for the price. After a few walks in the rain to test it out, I brought it camping in the high alpine for a few days where I experience prolong rain and high wind, I must say the only complaint I really have is the chin flap. I can't get it to seal tightly around my chin and in high wind, water could collect and flow down my neck.I don't bring a wind jacket anymore and this is on the outside of my pack instead of at the bottom of my pack. I would highly recommend those that don't want to spend the money on Gore-Tex. Sizing run small for a rain jacket. Also, the jacket does not have hand pockets, so in wet and high wind conditions, you will need gloves.

Wind and rain jacket with a slim fit.
31 August 2019

I actually hate rain jacket, they just sit in your packs for weeks at a time without getting much use, I much prefer wind jacket that can shed a little rain. In the high alpine it always scary not to bring one. This piece work very well as a wind and rain jacket in the high alpine, where it's actually guaranteed to be windy if you spend a lot of time up there. My large weight in at about 250g, which is pretty light for such an inexpensive jacket. Function well with just a sun or base layer underneath in variable condition in the alpine. The fit is slim, this large just the the stormline in medium, except the sleeve are longer. The medium is even a little longer, if I remember properly. The jacket is build as a minimalist jacket so I can't complaint about the missing ... MoreI actually hate rain jacket, they just sit in your packs for weeks at a time without getting much use, I much prefer wind jacket that can shed a little rain. The top stay pretty close if you cinch up the cord, but I can't get the collar to close snugly under my chin. In windy rain it tend to collect some water and send it straight down my neck.
