The Black Diamond Storm 400 projects more than just a simple shaft of light. This LED headlamp lends greater control over your light source for a breadth of situations, be they camping, climbing, or hiking. PowerTap Technology enables users to flip between full and dimmed power instantly, in addition to three different colored night vision modes and peripheral white lighting for close-range activities. That means youre able to survey surroundings near and far in the dead of night. You can even keep the elements in check with its waterproof/dustproof housing. Course all these features fall short without having a clear pulse on your power source. So make sure to keep an eye on the Storm 400s six-setting, three-LED battery meter. A critical feature for reading is how much longer this headlamps four AAA batteries (included) have to burn.

I've used this for a few weeks in Alaska and a trip to the jungle. This is easily the brightest headlamp I've ever personally owned. That said, there are a few things that bother me.1) The "lock" confirmation light. Way too bright/obnoxious. If you bump the power button while it's locked, the blue light blinks a bunch to let you know it's still locked. I'd rather have the red light flash once or twice on its lowest setting to better preserve night vision when that is a consideration.2) The touchpad feature. Really not necessary. It's annoying to have a part of the light you can't touch without changing the brightness setting.3) The mode button is too close to the power button. Cold/wet/gloved fingers need more space to work in my opinion. Hopefully you didn't ... MoreI've used this for a few weeks in Alaska and a trip to the jungle. Hopefully you didn't want to blast white light everywhere when you only wanted a dim red light...not a big deal if you're on the mountain, but in a tactical environment it's far from ideal.

This headlamp is exactly what I wanted for alpine start ski tours. Closer to a flood light than a headlamp, this thing will light up the entire mountain in front of you. Just make sure the person breaking trail has this headlamp on, and turn the brightness down before looking at your buddies. When following behind people this thing casts very large shadows. Design is sleek, light and attractive. Rechargability would be nice but the StormProof seal is a nice trade-off. Still working out all the controls, I never thought a headlamp could be packed with this many features, this is not your grandma's headlamp. My previous headlamp is at least 15 years old, so this was quite a jump in performance.

I had high hopes for this head lamp. Many of my adventures take me out into the backcountry in the winter, either late at night or early in the morning when a dependable, bright and reliable light is crucial for many hours. With a fresh set of batteries, the headlamp starts of incredibly bright and is fantastic. The issue I encountered was that this only lasted at max 2 hours in the cold before the light would start auto dimming and eventually turn off on its own. This occurred with every fresh set of battery I used and I found it incredibly frustrating to try and change out the batteries while out and about.Would I recommend this product? It depends - if you need an incredibly bright light, lasting for only a couple of hours in the cold, then by all means, this ... MoreI had high hopes for this head lamp. However, if you need a light that is super bright and will last for hours without dimming, you're better looking elsewhere.

Had this headlamps for a couple years now and have generally liked it. Used it for long approaches in the early morning and late night hikes and had not had any issues in moderate temperatures, but after a very cold hike yesterday, this is going to be relegated to dog walking duty now.It is outright dangerous to try and rely on this in cold temperatures. I was out on a hike in the White Mountains of NH - temps were in the single digits with windchill of -10. Walking out in the dark, I fired up my Storm and put on the high beam. Within minutes (literally) the beam dimmed to just barely being on, in spite of the battery gauge showing it was 3/4 full. Swapping out for fresh batteries did not help.Luckily my friend had a Petzl Actik which worked without fail, but ... MoreHad this headlamps for a couple years now and have generally liked it. If I had been on my own it would have been outright dangerous. This is not an isolated incident - I was talking to a friend who had the exact same thing happen on an early morning hike the other week. His Storm also died in single digit temps. Definitely don't trust this headlamp without a backup.
I bought this to replace a 15yr old headlamp. The 2 features I wanted were adjustable focus spotlight and the red light. This has those features with a slightly different implementation. It has 3 LEDs - a spotlight, a flood light and the red/blue/green light. All with adjustable brightness. The spotlight goes a good distance. The flood light does a good job of lighting your surrounding area like when you're doing stuff around camp. You can enable both spot and flood at the same time. The brightness of this combo basically lights up my backyard. At night, you can turn the redlight on by holding down the button. You can use this so you don't wreck your night vision.I was not expecting it to be this good for the price. Very happy with it. I bought this for a backup caving light. The light has a relatively small spot, and is moderately throwey, but good enough to use for sure. Unimpressive CRI, just from eyeball testing. I definitely would never use this as a primary, as the battery just doesn't last long enough, and I don't want to be changing out 4 AAAs every handful of hours. It's a bit heavy and bulky to carry around your neck as a backup, so I would still keep a more lightweight lamp around your neck, and keep this one in your backup box/bag in case your main light goes out for good. I am satisfied with the waterproofing, as I did a short sump dive and it worked fine through and through. All round just an okay headlamp but a good backup.
I love this headlight and its many features / light types. The tap feature to turn the brightness up works well enough for me but is somewhere between a hard "thud" and a light surface touch.I love that you can choose any brightness level for any of the lights. And i've been amazed at how efficient it is - I've yet to replace the rechargeable batteries I put in when I got it, and the battery indicator still lights up all of the dots/bars.Other reviews here and elsewhere mention the battery door latch breaking, which would render the light nearly useless (especially in wet conditions). Knowing that's a possibility, I plan to be gentle with the latch and not to open it while it's cold and brittle. My partner has the updated version of the storm, and although the ... MoreI love this headlight and its many features / light types. Knowing that's a possibility, I plan to be gentle with the latch and not to open it while it's cold and brittle. My partner has the updated version of the storm, and although the smaller form factor is really nice, it only takes 3 AAA batteries rather than 4 in the Storm 400. That fourth battery has somehow made a difference, and my headlamp has kept going when hers needed a battery swap.
I bought this amount about a month ago and it's insane. The jack of all trades for headlamps. The white light is beyond bright and it's also got 3 other colors. The green light is awesome if you ever want to go bigfoot hunting, it makes my amateur footage look legit. It's also got a blue and red light which are both great for setting the mood in your tent ;) Also great for your room if you're too cheap for LEDs. I use this several times a week and still haven't had to change the batteries out. Only negative is that it's a bit heavy, definitely not a dealbreaker though, I'll just wear a hat with it.
Rock solid headlamp with ample setting options. I've used the Strom 400 for the bulk of the summer season doing everything from: camping, backpacking, early morning ascents, and caving. The high beam worked great in thick woods on a night hike in RMNP. The low / wide angle option is my go to for being around camp and cooking. The red light is strong enough for repacking or unpacking your pack late night or early morning without completely messing up your night vision. Just be mindful the battery doesn't last as lomg as I'd like. I can get through 2-3 nights on a single set of fresh batteries, but would recommend taking extras for anything longer.
Not only does this have one of the strongest lumens out there for a headlamp but it also comes with a Blue, Green, and of course the classic Red light to help make the campfire gatherings that much better. This headlamp does require four AAA batteries which makes this headlamp a little heavier than my Cosmo. I purchased this headlamp for my dad who is a cattle rancher and he has used it every night of calving season and has officially moved on from his old Petzl headlamp. It's also perfect for checking for coyotes around the house or counting head of cattle on a night run if you so choose. I am considering borrowing it for an upcoming trip to the Creek because it's always nice to have two headlamps just in case.
