This hat is functional, durable enough and well vented. The hat I received is slightly different from the one pictured in that the venting runs continuously around the sides and back with solid fabric in the front. I find this preferable although the hat pictured would have been acceptable. This hat would work well in moderate rain for medium durations but I wouldn't consider it a rain hat. I bought mine for use as a sun-hat in warm dry climates. Size O/S (one size fits all?) should work for most people. I wear about 7 3/8 and the hat will easily fit quite a bit larger and smaller heads. Adjustment is quick and easy. I buy clothing in this sort of fabric for lightweight travel when I'll be carrying a lot, or traveling on airlines which have more restrictive luggage ... I am outdoors everyday teaching PE and it really protects my face and neck from the sun.The reason for the 3 stars is the method used to ship this one. My first hat was shipped flat. There was no problem with the brim. The brim naturally gets a little floppy in a cute way. This one was shipped folded on 2 sides of the brim in a rectangular shape. When I saw how it was shipped I was concerned because when I put it on the brim hung horribly like a box on my head. Just a heads-up to potential buyers: the extra-wide brim isn't stitched and has no stiffening wire, nor does it have any conical shape to it, so it just takes whatever random shape gravity gives it when you put it on. There might be a remedy for this, but I'm not that fashion-conscious.I wear a small/medium size in hats, so this is a little large on me. I had to play with the adjuster a bit to get the tension equal on both sides, but it stays on okay.I haven't used the chin-cord yet, and when I let it drape in front, it brushes against my ears, so I keep it in back. Lightweight, comfortable and protected my bald head from the sun during long days fishing. The lanyard was also helpful when the wind picked up. The mesh ventilation was great at keeping my head cool even though it was covered. Anything Columbia I've used over the years has been the real deal and this hat is no exception.
These were the perfect sun protection for a Palo Duro Canyon State Park trip that my girlfriend and I recently took to hike The Lighthouse Trail.The 3" brim provides perfect full 360° coverage sun protection to your head, neck, and face. Having a large head, it's nice that these run large to avoid headaches from it fitting too tight and the rear cinch/stopper for proper fitment adjustments is a nice feature. The sweatband work great to avoid sweat stains. For cleaning, I place the hat in a laundry bag, wash on delicate, and then allow it to air dry out of the laundry bag.A great sun protection hat! 🏜I
I decided to buy this hat after trying out a friend's while out kayaking.The difference in coolness compared to my ballcap was definitely noticeable.I love the cinch adjustment around the crown of the hat. It can be worn looser if it isn't too windy or tighter if it is. This also gives it great versatility for different sized heads...The chin strap is handy for those occasional gusts that might catch you by surprise..at least it can't fly away.It's light, packs well, keeps my face well shaded, all important things when out on the water all day.Shipping was quick, came 2 days earlier than the final estimate, 4 days earlier than the original estimate...can't complain about that.
I have waaaaay too many sun hats, some very expensive, but this is my favorite. So I bought a second one as a backup. It's so light and breathable that even when I'm hot and take it off, I don't really notice a difference. Haven't tried the newer version bc I think this one looks better...
