My rig is a Strat into a Vox AC30C2 (modified to match sound of 1966 model) and I had a G-Major 2 in the effects loop. The tone was just right. Then the G-Major failed. The aim of the GX100 was to get front end NS, wah, OD and compression and use 4 cables to put the time effects into the AC30 effects loop. I'm not using the amps because the Vox preamp is perfect for me.I've tried for a month to recapture the tone I'm after but there's something I can't get right.I think Boss make high quality gear and create a particular sound, but it's not right for me.

I bought this to compare with my Boss GT-10. I was disappointed there was little difference in sound between the two. The intelligent pitch tracking was the same and while the GT-10 has two guitar synthesizers, the GX-100 has none. I decided to send it back and keep using the GT-10. Despite that, the GX-100 is a very good processor. Just be careful not to step on the knobs that are poorly placed next to the footswitches.

I was able to program a usable patch in a couple of hours to use at church services. Sounds great direct to foh. It's very easy to setup and get working without the PC editor, but the editor helped me use the assign functions more efficiently. All-in-all, a big win. Boss needs to provide firmware updates to add effects and fix the current (04/2023) IR bug, but GX-100 is fine as-is. Coming from Helix universe I'd like more Amp and OD/Distortion models. Also would like to be able to insert Verb/Delay between amp and Cab/IR, not possible now.

I have owned and used most of the predecessors of this unit, most recently was the GT-1000. I like the topology of the Boss processors which makes the learning curve much easier when going to a new model. This one seems to have the brain and heart of the GT-1000 but without many of the I/O ports. For me, it still has much more than I will ever need, sounds great and was easy to set up. I'm very pleased with the price point and believe I received a great value.
Overall:This is a heavy duty pedal with so many different great sounding amps and effects that I don't even know where to start. Well built is an understatement. The build of it screams professional. from the chassis to the knobs and expression pedal this thing feels Pro in every way.The amps are fewer than most companies offer but BOSS went the quality over quantity route here. From crystalline cleans to all out brutal and everything in between. The drives are excellent and so are the modulations, delays, and reverbs. I find them superior to my Helix actually. There's not enough room in this review box for me to go over everything I love. A couple things I do not love..There's no poly pitch in this unit. The assigns can be confusing at times especially when it ... MoreOverall:This is a heavy duty pedal with so many different great sounding amps and effects that I don't even know where to start. The assigns can be confusing at times especially when it comes to assigning the expression pedal. It was ok once I wrapped my head around it but it was definitely and obstacle I had to overcome. Overall this unit is well worth the 599 price tag. I have owned many modeling units for many years and this is one of the best I have had.
The combination of sound quality, device capabilities and brand reliability can not be touched. The amp feel is remarkable and the response is as close to immediate as it gets. A+++++
The variety of sounds possible through the GX-100 is truly stunning, and the quality of many of them is excellent. There are quite a few I doubt I'd ever use, but that's probably true for anyone who buys it, and it'll be a different few for almost everyone. One drawback for someone (like me) with no experience using effects pedals is that it's not at all intuitive to figure out which sounds come from which effects, especially within a given preset loaded with as many sounds as will fit.I've had it now a few weeks and I'm starting to understand how to use it, but found that things I imagined would be simple to achieve are much more complex than I'd thought, or just not possible. Still the promise of getting a handle on the unit's flexibility and power encourages me ... MoreThe variety of sounds possible through the GX-100 is truly stunning, and the quality of many of them is excellent. I actually bought this used from Guitar Center in Maple Grove, Minnesota. it looked extremely new...I use this for playing live in a cover band and also every other weekend in church. What I love about this is the depth of the configurations that all my previous pedals couldn't do. The freedom to assign ALL the footswitches to do practically ANYTHING you want is awesome. There are still things I find out it can do every few days. Sounds are very good...I have to say the distorted Leslie speaker Rotary is the closest approximation of the real thing I have ever heard. Think "Nantucket Sleighride" by Mountain....One thing I was disappointed with was the omission of XLR outputs...it seems like there is a trend in the industry that is starting to omit these. Great effects processor for the price point with so much built-in value. Midi interface, recording device, AIRD modeling, Bluetooth adapter, effects loop, etc. It?s also a solid metal build with a great on-device interface. Versatile for at-home playing, recording, and on-stage performances.
This is the 3rd effects processor like this that I have owned. Now I see what all of the other's were trying to do. I played many different units before settling on the Boss GX-100. Several that cost twice as much money. The GX-100 is by far the best you can get sound wise at any price! It is much easier to program than any other one that I've seen and you can make incredible sounding patches in very little time. It truly does sound very amazing! I'm no programmer. I hate to do it. So when I say you can get great sounds quickly then you know that it's not too hard to do. The touch screen has a lot to do with that. I play live with it run straight through the PA I rehearse the same way and right now I practice my guitar with headphones. If you're looking for a modeling pedal I very highly recommend the Boss GX-100. It is truly a pleasure to own. Oh, I've been playing guitar since the early 70's.
