Compact design This machine s economical footprint means it can be integrated into any interior design. You also have more storage options for when you re not using the machine, but a coffee hiatus sounds somewhat mythical, so you may never get to packing it away. Microfoam texturing Microfoam is steamed milk that is velvety smooth in texture, ideal for creating latte art. What you want is foam with small, even bubbles (unless you are trying to make a cappuccino). This machine s 1600-watt element gives you adequate steam to create rosettes, hearts, and more. Microfoam will also enhance the overall flavour of your cup. Heats up in three seconds This machine heats up and is ready for brewing in just three seconds. You ll be cupping your espresso in your hands before you can even self-diagnose a case of the Mondays. If you re making a milk coffee beverage, such as a latte or a cappuccino, switching from brewing to steaming is instantaneous. Professional portafilter The portafilter is 54mm wide and holds up to 19 grams of ground coffee. These numbers are optimum for producing coffee that tastes like your usual order at the local cafe.

After several years, it's generally good with a few nagging design flaws

The good part is that it has run well for me for several years at 2-5 cups per day with generally good quality pulls (as long as the grounds are not too finely ground), with easy daily cleanup. The design flaws/improvements include:1) Cleaning and descaling light flashing combinations are quite convoluted (I still have to regularly dive into the documentation to sort out what the overly-specialized light blinking codes and cleaning cheat codes are...). It would be nicer/elegant if there was a simpler "clean" and "descale" LED (maybe a single colored LED depending on state), with a button to trigger cleaning, descaling, and wand maintenance operations (maybe a single discrete button on the side) rather than front-panel cheat codes.2) Slightly ... MoreThe good part is that it has run well for me for several years at 2-5 cups per day with generally good quality pulls (as long as the grounds are not too finely ground), with easy daily cleanup. If you have a fine ground (powdery) coffee that is made for professional machines it simply doesn't have the power (struggles even if you swap in a non-pressurized basket, though it helps). Pulls remain somewhat inconsistent (most grounds need some combination of 1-cup or 2-cup or both, depending on ground, and even with pull calibration its just consistently inconsistent).3) Base is underweighted, so when turning/torquing the portafilter, the entire machine turns/slides. I suspect this lightweight construction is to minimize shipping/transport weight, but it does make for a bit of a fussy daily insertion of the portafilter as you have to stabilize the machine with your forearm. It would be nice if the base was rubberized, and if threaded holes were machined into the base to receive a simple add-on base weight for those who require it.4) The stock metal milk jug top opening is a bit narrow, making milk cleaning a bit difficult unless you have small hands or a cleaning wand (or wash it immediately after emptying). Wider mouth would be a nice improvement.

Auto Steam failing

After 6 months of daily use making 2 double espresso lattes every morning and diligently doing daily purges and scheduled cleanings and descaling, the auto steam function on the Bambino Plus has failed. I was on the phone with Breville rep 2 days ago and she was very nice and we did a factory reset and tried steaming milk using auto cycle and it worked. One nit is the cleaning cycle has no warning and twice now the machine has allowed me to pull espresso shot only to call for cleaning cycle prior to steaming milk. There should be a counter built in that tells the user "cleaning cycle to start after x more uses"...I have a feeling this machine has either heat sensor issue or some other defect that only appears after a few months of use. While I'm not ok with most products nowadays being designed to be obsolete after a few short years, obsolete after 6 months is unacceptable. If it lasted for 3 years without any issues and then died, I could accept that. I have a feeling I'm going to be on the phone a lot this week trying to resolve this issue.

Undeterred, I immediately returned it through Amazon and ordered a replacement that continues to work as expected, now for the last couple of months. (The determination was based on knowledge that despite the machine at work being several years old and extensively used, it continues to perform well along with a good maintenance program.)If you have space for a cute machine that performs as well as it looks and have budgeted appropriately, I’d recommend the setup without hesitation. Breville designs thoughtfully and delivers good quality products. Compact, effective, well-made

I bought this in October, and I've already been through a cleaning cycle, so I've made more than 200 coffees. The first 6 weeks I was relying on an old grinder that couldn't do an espresso grind, so I relied on the pressurized basket, and that actually worked pretty well. Not amazing espresso, but more than good enough.I got a Baratza Virtuoso ESP after that, and the grinder IS good enough to get me to the fineness I need, and it's been a good step up. The espressos are better, but they take more work.I specifically bought this machine because of the ease of steaming. The machine heats up fast--as advertised--and it steams the milk well without any intervention. The downsides of this machine are the weird portafilter with a plastic insert that's hard to remove, and the extremely small drip tray. I would actually buy an aftermarket drip tray that was twice as big. I don't mind emptying it after every latte, but it's very full after that ONE latte and that's not great.Still, these are minor complaints. I bought a naked portafilter on amazon, a dosing ring and a puck screen. 54mm aftermarket equipment is reasonably abundant if you don't like the stock stuff that came with your machine, and they'll improve the quality of your espresso if you're willing to put in the time.I'm giving this 5 stars because after 3 months, I only have small quibbles with it.

Disruptive mandatory cleaning cycles
27 January 2024

The main problem with this machine is that it interrupts you right in the middle of making coffee to demand that you do things like run a descaling or cleaning cycle. So here I am, with a few freshly brewed espresso shots, but I can't steam milk until I spend 30 minutes descaling (and BTW that's an active process -- you have to engage with the machine; you can't just kick it off and go do something else). If this were a well-designed machine, I'd be able to snooze the warning and do the descaling at my convenience. It's also unclear whether you can preemptively descale and clean, or if you have to wait for the machine to prompt you. (There's no obvious way to enter these cleaning modes until the lights all start flashing in warning.)It's bad enough when you get ... MoreThe main problem with this machine is that it interrupts you right in the middle of making coffee to demand that you do things like run a descaling or cleaning cycle. It's also unclear whether you can preemptively descale and clean, or if you have to wait for the machine to prompt you. (There's no obvious way to enter these cleaning modes until the lights all start flashing in warning.)It's bad enough when you get hit out of the blue with one of these warnings, but sometimes you even get a double-whammy. For example, yesterday I got the descaling warning. I didn't have time to deal with it, so I washed my filter basket and coffee cup, which were dirty from brewing espresso that I didn't actually get to drink. Today, I bit the bullet and decided to descale. I spent some time on YouTube trying to remember the process. I did the whole thing and then rewashed everything, as required after descaling. Then, finally, I brewed my espresso. But, again, just as I was about to steam my milk, I got a NEW flashing warning indicating that I had to run the clean cycle. So I had to refresh my memory on how to clean, and then go through that painful 30-minute process (which is completely different from descaling), by which time my espresso was cold.BTW, these processes are complicated and counterintuitive. I can't do either one without first watching a third-party video that explains it. It doesn't help that there are no descaling or cleaning controls on the machine. You have to use the single-shot, double-shot, and steam buttons to enter the descaling and cleaning processes. (You have to tap the buttons in completely counterintuitive ways, and you have to remember multiple patterns for each process.) Also, the materials needed for descaling and cleaning don't come with the machine. You have to buy them separately.I've had the Breville Bambino for almost three years. Except for this cleaning problem, it's not that bad. However, this behavior is just way too annoying for me, so I'm probably going to get rid of the Breville and go back to De'Longhi.

Excellent milk frothing
27 September 2024

I bought this six weeks ago as my old fully automatic coffee machine (another brand)had broken down. I live on my own and drink only cappuccino, so I don’t need a machine with lots of coffee options or a dual boiler. The milk frothing is great - I use maximum froth and I get a really dense, smooth and silky froth. I’ve experimented with making espresso using freshly ground beans and eventually discovered that I got a much more delicious tasting coffee using the single wall basket. I just bought the Sage Smart grinder pro and playing around with the grind coarseness and changing to the single wall basket has enabled me to make the nicest cup of coffee I’ve had in a long time. The shot volume is preset but you can change it - buried in the instructions so took me a while to find how to do it. The processes are pretty speedy. The water tank is robust, easy to seat and remove and the lid has a loop handle which is very handy. The water filter is also easy to fit. The steam nozzle has four holes which I understand improves the froth. It unscrews and there’s a little tool to unblock the steam holes which is stored beneath the water tank. I haven’t had to use the cleaning or descaling programmes yet. Aesthetically the machine looks great, really neat and stylish - I chose the stainless steel option. I’m delighted with my choice. I don’t know how long this machine will last, but considering how much the high end espresso machines cost I think that so far, it’s great value for money.

Fantastic machine when everything is working
28 December 2023

I bought this almost a year ago and was extremely pleased with the quality of the coffee and automatically steamed milk. At that time, I would have enthusiastically rated the Bambino Plus 5 stars. Unfortunately, after about six months the automatically steamed milk began overflowing from the steam cup most of the time. After doing an internet search, I found that several others were having the same problem. I tried the suggestions I found on the internet but none resolved the problem. I was eventually able to reach technical support and after a video session with the tech, it was determined that machine needed to be repaired at the factory. I was eventually able to reach technical support and after a video session with the tech, it was determined that machine needed to be repaired at the factory. I have used the machine several times since it was returned. I am hopeful that the automatic stream function will continue to work as some people on the internet reported that their machines, including replacements continue to overflow. Mine has overflowed one time since but the last five times it worked fine.Shortly after I bought the machine, when I was still learning how to use it, the machine turned off and the LED buttons began a flashing pattern. I couldn't find a page or chart in the manual that explained the errors indicated by the patterns of flashing lights. I searched the internet and was able to find a number of videos posted by Breville and individuals users on using and maintaining the machine. I found my answer, the steam wand was plugged. When I went back to manual I found a section on steam wand blocked and it described the flashing button pattern. My suggestion to Breville, put a chart in the manual that describes all of the flashing button patterns: lower steam wand alert, time for cleaning cycle, time for descaling, block steam wand and any others I have not yet encountered.Everything considered, I had a perfect cup cappuccino this morning and I would probably by the Bambino plus again. I would recommend it but with the understanding that there will be issues.

Makes Great Espresso After Some Experimentation
18 September 2024

I only really drink Espresso coffee, and I'm quite picky that it's properly made and not just a strong coffee with fake crema like some pods that I can mention produce. I'm using a J-Ultra hand grinder set to 147 and 10g of beans, a WDT and calibrated tamper. This makes me a 20g single espresso with a 20 second pour.I chose the Bambino plus over the Bambino mainly to have the option of frothing if we're entertaining. So my complaints: the supplied tamper is poor, the drip-tray is very small. The porta-filter output ports are too far apart for a single espresso cup, the drip-trap metal cover is quite sharp so it's easy to cut yourself when washing it. The auto dispense is not very accurate: my grind and tamp are very consistent; but I cannot seem to programme it so ... MoreI only really drink Espresso coffee, and I'm quite picky that it's properly made and not just a strong coffee with fake crema like some pods that I can mention produce. The auto dispense is not very accurate: my grind and tamp are very consistent; but I cannot seem to programme it so it's reliable. I have programmed the pour time overly long and I stop it manually. An ESE option would have been nice, but it needs to be a 9 bar system for reall espresso - the supplied pressurized basket isn't actually too bad for ESE; but it's often a bit weak in comparison to 18 bar ESE systems: not a big issue for me, apart from I have a stock of ESE pods that need running down.Good points: and there are many. The heat up time is incredible. The shut off pressure release feature after the pour is great (I think only on the plus - but I could be wrong). The small size is also great for a crowded kitchen, and it is a good looking machine. Finally, it makes really good espresso if you get the grind and tamp consistent. I'll probably end up getting a replacement porta-filter and basket - at which point I'll have my perfect setup. P.S., I also picked up a Sage-10 knock box which matches nicely and works well.

Nice looking/ compact machine. Tasty espresso, but have concerns on the quality.

There are many things l like about the Breville Bambino Plus, makes reasonable coffee, easy use, compact, works well with the Stand-Alone Breville Smart Coffee Grinder. I also like the reminder to descale after 200 shots and perform other maintenance tasks, however I’m not sure how valuable it is as it’s unclear if Breville factor in their recommendation of drawing a pre-warn up/post clean up shot per session. Feels moot anyways since the first Breville Bamboo Plus machine we purchased just over two years ago quit reminding me after about 18 months, which should have been a sign of things to come!Whilst I typically make 3 double shots in the same timeframe per day for my household, we are not there often. So in reality, even though I had the first machine just over 2 years, I basically got about one year’s worth of use before it started leaking, even after the O-Ring was replaced. Then it started tripping our circuit breaker as the shots were pulled. Next it quickly moved onto not working all together, both pulling shot and steaming milk.So why did we purchase another? As mentioned, does make nice espresso, compact, easy to use. I started researching more reliable machine, but wanted something quickly and had a familiar feel. So felt best option would be to try again in hopes the issues the last one had were hopefully a one off/poor quality machine. I still have serious concerns about its reliability. But let’s see what happens with this new replacement.

The best home barista training machine

Anyone with even a basic interest in how to make excellent coffee at home should buy this machine. It totally opened my eyes to how much bad coffee is being served at coffee shops around the country. The Bambino Plus makes the process so easy and coffee making quickly becomes obsessive as you realise how much better and cheaper it can be when you make it yourself. The customisation options are excellent for such a small, compact machine. Every part of the brewing process, from the pre-infusion to the temperature of the steamed milk can be tweaked and once you have things just right it'll remember them for every drink you make with your chosen coffee. It's fun experimenting with different roasts and different grind settings (do buy yourself a good grinder too) to ... MoreAnyone with even a basic interest in how to make excellent coffee at home should buy this machine. If I'm feeling a bit more barista and ready for some latte art making, I enjoy doing it manually, and again this machine can produce perfect silky milk. There's little to find fault in this machine - it's a proper workhorse. I'm actually on my second. My first black one was used multiple times daily for nearly 3 years and was still functioning perfectly when I gave it to a friend as we were remodelling our kitchen and wanted a silver one instead. I thought about getting a different model but the Bambino Plus just does everything we need in a coffee machine and does it exceptionally well, so why change?Highly recommended.
